Troll Mech Works

Location: Styk
Founded: 3/15/2003
Data Updated: 11/26/2009

TMW (Troll Mech Works) is a collaboration of several smaller component suppliers in the Chaos March fringe of FedCom space. Started by Jock ‘Troll’ Harquin (ex-Marik, ex-merc), the company is dedicated to producing “big ‘mechs, with big feet, big guns and roomy cockpits”. Much of this philosophy is attributed to the many years Harquin spent trying to get his 6’6”, 135kg frame into standard ‘mech cockpits.

TMW supplies limited-run designs to most customers; however, FedCom and Marik customers seem to get better service, while Lyran Alliance brokers are grumbling about how long their orders take to process. For some reason, Capellan orders are always bumped to the bottom of the queue. TMW trades on the New Syrtis and Atreus stock exchanges as code VJHTMW; shares currently priced at 16.95C-bills (down 0.70)

(Dark Phoenix) Thunderbolt (Dark Phoenix) Thunderbolt (Custom Miniature)
Created from a MW:DA Crimson Hawk. It's not quite there yet - I'll take another go at this soon - but it's got (IMHO) a lot more of the feel of the old armored toad than the Reseen Tbolt.

(Dark Phoenix) Rifleman (Dark Phoenix) Rifleman (Custom Miniature)
Another recreation ... on a ForestryMech (DA figure) frame, make up some balsawood ammo holders, then attach MW:DA Locust arms. Highly effective, and retains torso twist!

(Dark Phoenix) Battlemaster, take 2 (Dark Phoenix) Battlemaster, take 2 (Custom Miniature)
Okay, this Battlemaster replica is built on the frame of the MW:DA Valiant, with Ocelot arms. A very simple and IMHO good-looking substitute. In the bottom right, a prototype BLR-1S is taking shape.

Variant Starslayer Variant Starslayer (Custom Miniature)
Love the stats of this 'Mech, didn't love the look of the mini. So, a little work later ... moved the hips up to the top of the legs where they belonged, built a shoulder for the arm LL, and replaced the torso LL with the ERPPC version.

FWL/WoB Heavy: the Manta Ray FWL/WoB Heavy: the Manta Ray (Custom Miniature)
More than the guns and armor of the Cerberus on a 75-ton frame. The Manta Ray was one of the Word of Blake's "suprises" - issued to their mercenary support forces largely, because it lacked C3i integration. With a Gauss Rifle, two ERLLs, and banks of medium lasers fore and aft, it proved a deadly foe.

There can only be one! There can only be one! (Custom Miniature)
Something about the MW:DA agro-mech suggested that a warrior's heart beat inside it ... some kitbashing later, a late-model Highlander variant emerged.

Halberd, Punisher-style Halberd, Punisher-style (Custom Miniature)
The Halberd is a very nice Talon Minis figure. However, I thought the legs a little small ... this one has the legs from the Reseen Warhammer IIC, which IMHO bulk up nicely. This model is Zac's Punisher variant - Gauss rifle, paired ERPPCs, and three ERMLs.

Nova Cat assault: the Feral Cat Nova Cat assault: the Feral Cat (Custom Miniature)
"Gentlemen, we have the technology ..." The Feral Cat posits the Nova Cats needing a new 100 ton assault in a hurry. Where better to start with than the Clan's namesake 'Mech? The main additions are the large, torso-mounted ATM-12 racks.

(Dark Phoenix) Warhammer 9S (Dark Phoenix) Warhammer 9S (Custom Miniature)
Project Dark Phoenix is an attempt to recreate Unseen-looking 'Mechs from available parts. So why did I attempt to recreate a Project Phoenix 'Mech? Mainly because the IS Warhammer is such a beeswax to assemble ... this one uses the legs from a Talon Minis Halberd, plus the upper body, arms & SRM pack from the IWM Warhammer IIC.

Kitbash: Bushwhacker II Kitbash: Bushwhacker II (Custom Miniature)
Body of a Bushwhacker, legs of a Corvis, arms of a Buccaneer ... this little Mk II moves 6/9/0, with an UAC_10 and ERLL. Going for the bare metal look on this one.

Project Dark Phoenix: Battlemaster Project Dark Phoenix: Battlemaster (Custom Miniature)
Project Dark Phoenix is an effort by Rommell_Twee (of LoTB) and others to come up with 'Mechs resembling the Unseen, that can serve as replacements for the Unseen. There's an intent to use as many pieces of existing IWM minis in this regard as possible. My Battlemaster is based on MW:DA parts, and comes up qith quite the look and feel of the classic original.

Stealth Marauder Stealth Marauder (Custom Miniature)
TwinkieMonkey over on CBT.com did the stats - a Liao design with stealth armor, a Gauss in the right hand, and LB-10X/MPL in the left. I decided it needed to look like something which had had unnatural relations with a Raven, and for stealth armor, a dark paintjob was needed.

Enforcer 6T Enforcer 6T (Enforcer)
Never a great fan of the Enforcer III - the mini pose was lame, and the armament uninspiring. Then I encountered the 6T - Gauss rifle and TC goodness! So I got the mini, modded the pose, and kitbashed up a Gauss rifle & battlefist.

BattleCorps Berserker BattleCorps Berserker (BRZ-A3 Berserker)
Okay, a Berserker in BattleCorps regiment colors (hint: all www.battlecorps.com members can join, regardless of skill level, and submit a mini). I've chosen to do what I call the "Rommell Twee" mod - change the PPC from "I'm carrying a surfboard, dude" horizontal to "this space available for your ad!" vertical. Looks a lot better iMHO; interestingly, the Berserker art for the cover of TRO:3055(Upgraded) has the PPC at a definite angle upwards!

My take on the Battletechnology Ventilator My take on the Battletechnology Ventilator (Custom Miniature)
The Ventilator was an old Battletechnology design carrying two Gausses, described as resembling the Warhammer, and notable for the use of a second cockpit with a dedicated gunner. I make this up using a lot of parts from a plastic 1:144-scale Warhammer that my kids had broken, and was happy withthe result. A slightly 'funky' paintjob, meant to be some sort of alien swamp camo ... ;-)

DCMS 'Mech - the Sinchuu Senshi DCMS 'Mech - the Sinchuu Senshi (Custom Miniature)
The Sinchuu Senshi (Copper Warrior) is the cheaper "little brother" of the Tetsu Senshi (Steel Warrior) program (see above). Following the nuking of Luthien in the WoB Jihad, the DCMS lost its only plant makinf Dragons. The Sinchuu Senshii was thrust into production as a cheap alternative. 65 tons, 4/6/0 movement, with a standard PPC and AC/10 backed by four medium lasers. The only L2 components used were double-strength heatsinks, which proved ironically abundant in the remains of the Kuritan state at the beginning of the 32nd Century.

The Duke - a merc assault 'Mech The Duke - a merc assault 'Mech (Custom Miniature)
Based around a standard engine, the Duke carries paired ERPPCs on the right arm, and a Gauss rifle on the left, with enough heat sinks to use them and it's secondary laer banks freely. An AMS provides a final layer of protection over its 16 tons of armor. At under 10 million C-bills, and with a BV just shy of 2000, it's a steal!

The Crusader III The Crusader III (Custom Miniature)
Actually, it belongs in my Gunman series of kitbashes (see above), but when I put it together I was struck by the resemblance to the old Crusader. Paired LPLs with a TC for in-close, two LRM-15s for range, and an AMS where you'd expect to find the head. One benefit of being made from kitbashed plastic parts - the arms still bend.

F/A-10 Thunderchild F/A-10 Thunderchild (Custom Miniature)
A Marik conventional fighter, scratchbuilt. 30 tons, 5/8, carries a standard load of an LB-5X and 6xRL10s, with 6 gravity bombs also carried in this example. Mainly intended for ground support, it has some use as a fighter as long as fusion-powered ASFs aren't around.

The Suppressor-X Assault VTOL The Suppressor-X Assault VTOL (Custom Miniature)
30 tons, ICE engine for 8/12, and an LB-20X. Yes, an LB-20X in a chopper. 1.5 tons of armor mean it's fragile as all heck, but it's one of those "area denial" weapons - provided it doesn't allow itself to be pinged from long range, it messes with the enemy's mind.

to the MadCat II, of course! At 100 tons, it carries a RAC-5, Gauss Rifle, pair of LRM-15s with Artemis and four ER Mediums for backup. 3/5/3 movement, designed to recapture both terrain and market share taken by the evil Clans! ;-)

The Falchion was submitted by Big_Ken for the Steelius Maximus challenge at www.classicbattletech.com, and came second to LiamNeversaan's Tetsuyama. The Falchion is a post-3060 design, taking full advantage of L2 equipment. It mounts an ERPPC, LB-10X, LRM-20, MRM-30 and pair of MLs.

Based on a Steel Warrior chassis, an attempt to make something looking like an Unseen Marauder. It doesn't, but it looks nice enough. Armed with an LB-10X and a pair of LRM-15s in the arm pods, it's a support 'Mech, not a front-liner.

Eaglehawk - FWLM/WoB Eaglehawk - FWLM/WoB "Sniper" (Custom Miniature)
I'm still working on the backfluff for this, but I'm assuming a faction in the FWL supported the WoB (at least until it all blew up on Gibson). The paintscheme is meant to show a merging of Marik Militia & WoB colors. The figure is a DA Construction MOD with slightly modded Steel Warrior forearms. In game terms it's 60 tons, 6/9/6, ERPPC & Light Gauss, and not a whole lot of armor. It's a long range sniper/skirmisher.

Reseen Phoenix Hawk LAM Reseen Phoenix Hawk LAM (Phoenix Hawk LAM)
Don't worry folks, no IWM minis were harmed in the creation of this figure! I used the MW:DA PXH (which is only slightly larger than its CBT brother). At 55 tons, with 9 Improved Jump-Jets, in AirMech mode this baby has a jump of 27!! It still retains the LPL and two ERSLs, and adds a Guardian ECM to the TC.

Camlann is a (somewhat paranoid) world in the central regions of the FWL, sandwiched between Regulan and Andurian territories. What with the central government falling all over the WoBbies and all, the best defence seemed to be a home-built armaments industry. Hence the Camlann Militia ... a whole regiment of scratchbuilt conventional vehicles. The AirCav was a break from the same paint-scheme. Here we see all the different VTOL designs - scouts, attack choppers, troop transports, cargo lifters - in a gaggle shortly after departing base.

It was a running joke from Atlas3060 over on CBT.com ... then I had an Axeman 2N with missing arms, and a leftover sword arm from the MK figure used in the Ghenna Neros ... viola! Take the 2N, replace the FF armor with 12 tons of standard to free up some crits, then add: Sword, TSM, UAC-10 & 2t ammo, 2 SRM-6s and 2 ERMLs. Now a very nasty infighter!

Ghenna Neros Ghenna Neros (Custom Miniature)
The Ghenna Neros was designed by Dart_Omega, and is basically a 75-ton Battlemaster. PPC, 6xML, and in this case, an LRM-10 instead of the SRM-6 & MGs. I decided to adapt a Mage Knight figure - the Steam Knight - for the job. The head was shaped from clay, then I used my cheap imitation Dremel to grind away the canopy areas, leaving the raised hatch lines. I'm very pleased with how that worked out.

That's no misprint - that's III-C. Although this design was mis-named by ComGuards who based the name on a report of 'Mechs that "looked kinda like Jenners". The Jenner IIIC (Clan name unknown) is a 95-tonner, 4/6[8]/0 assault Omni from Clan Ice Hellion. The two versions shown carry 4xLRM20 and 2xERLL, or "just" 3 Gauss Rifles, respectively. Believed to be a captured Clan Coyote design, it has only appeared with the Hellions with second-line or bandit-hunting units, which is probably due to the way Ice Hellions feel about Assault 'Mechs.

Used to great effect (IMHO ;-) on this generic fire lance. The technique requires little skill (else I couldn't do it). Prime white, then base coat with mud red-brown. Dab spots on in sand, Dab more spots on in flat mid-green, overlapping some of the tan spots. Then give the whole mini a coating of strong black wash. This brings out the lines & panels, and removes the 'flatness' that the mini would otherwise have. You can use a cotton bud to remove excess wash from flat surfaces, and to mop up 'puddles' of wash where you don't want them.

So-called because it can be easily disguised as a war memorial. A pair of LB-5X autocannon firing flak rounds with an L3 AA targeting system make it a VTOL's nightmare. Camlann's main battle tanks Camlann's main battle tanks (Custom Miniature)
From the Camlann Militia. On the left - the ECP: 50 tons, 4/6 ICE, LB-10X and SRM-2. The lower variant has an LB-20x, dropping the missile system and a little armor. This is based on the old-style Hunter chassis, and a turret made from chair buttons. On the right, the Penguyn - 45 ton 5/8 ICE, with an LB-5X and SRM-2. All balsa construction except for the gun (a blind rivet. Why blind? I dunno). At bottom, the "tank hunter" version - Jagdpenguyn - with an LB-10X in a fixed mount. These aren't finished being painted, but I had the chance to get the photos ...

Other Lionheart II versions Other Lionheart II versions (Custom Miniature)
MOre ICE vehicles from the Camlann Militia. They are, from top left, clockwise: the Lionheart IIL, 30 tons, 8/12, with LRM-20 and Artemis; the Lionheart IIS, 30 tons, fusion engine for 12/18, with BAP, TAG, ECM and 2xERML; the Lionheart IIBA battle-armor carrier, 30 tons, 8/12 ICE, 4 tons cargo and 4xSRM-2; and the Lionheart IIP hover APC, 20 tons, 10/15, room for two squads (2 tons) and a pair of turreted MGs.

Lionheart II-A Lionheart II-A (Custom Miniature)
Also from the Camlann Militia, the Lionheart IIA is a 30-ton ICE hover, carrying an LB-10X autocannon with a speed of 8/12. Also part of my "50 cent army", the Lionheart II series (there's more!) are based on plastic buttons off chair arms, and some automotive plugs, plus beads.

Nashorn support tank Nashorn support tank (Custom Miniature)
From 3rd Regiment, Camlann Militia, FWL. The Nashorn is a 20 ton infantry support vehicle armed with an LB-5X autocannon. It's also part of my '50 cent army' - scratchbuilt from (in this case) a rubber window wedge, a blind rivet, a little clay, and some ingenuity.

The Deliverator The Deliverator (Custom Miniature)
Sometimes, the kitbash just doesn't work ... The stats are good enough - IS level 2, 2xLRM-20, 2xUAC/5, ERLL, 15 tons armor. A good solid fire-support 'Mech. As the TRO says, “You want fire support, and you want it wholesale – not in dribs and drabs. You want direct fire. You want indirect fire. You need it all, and you need it all in one package. You’ve seen the rest, now buy the best. The Deliverator, from TMW”. So went the opening of TMW’s most aggressive advertising campaign in 3063, to launch their latest assault-class fire support ‘Mech. ... Undoubtably, the Deliverator – on paper – goes far to fulfilling the somewhat grandiose claims made in the campaign ... the Deliverator had the capacity to strip almost 6 tons of armor off any target in an instant ... While the layout of torso, legs and weapons is carefully engineered to balance the stresses of firing 40 tons of weapons while moving, the overall impression from the outside is “like watching an eggbeater walk”, to quote one observer ... another two years were spent tweaking the leg articulation and chassis mounts, in order to try & achieve a gait which didn’t make external observers laugh ... The release of TMW’s Balor fire-support design more or less killed off the Deliverator in 3064

The Ice Lion The Ice Lion (Custom Miniature)
A Clan Ice Hellion "assault" - 75 tons, 5/8(10)/0 movement, two UAC/20s and two ER medium lasers. What, armor? You cannot have everything, trothkin. Used as an ambush predator, this can rock. If your double-ugly sticks miss, you'd better pray the MASC doesn't lock up.

Colossus Colossus (Custom Miniature)
My first ever kitbash! 100 tons, 2xPPC, Gauss, UAC/20 - how did you guess? The Lyrans love it, even if it is a "slight" ripoff of the Devastator. Still one of my favourites - the pieces I used come from old 1980's Zoids, mainly, plus superglue, clay & "bits".

Worktroll Worktroll (Custom Miniature)
This figure was originally painted 30 years ago or so, for a Traveller RPG campaign. One of my sons said "Hey, this looks like you!" So for anyone who wonders, here is Worktroll, standing next to his Unseen Archer! (I only have the legs of an old plastic kit, but ...)

The JagBow The JagBow (Custom Miniature)
I did up a field refit of the Jagermech 6DD, called the JagHammer, with dual PPCs, SRMs and a searchlight. Then I dropped it ... The PPC arms are now on a Clan heavy kitbash, and I realised you can in fact make the Jagermech more threatening than a Longbow - drop all the autocannons, keep the MPLs, fit 4 LRM-15s with 4 tons ammo and 2 tons additional armor, and up to DHS. The result is quite a reasonable fire support 'Mech, and more utility than a stock -6DD.

The Ice Lizard The Ice Lizard (Custom Miniature)
An Ice Hellion 'Mech developed to mount the ATM-6 captured in bulk from Clan Coyote, the Ice Lizard started life as a Stinger LAM, until the top part got lost. The body comes from a Battle Cobra arm - it too got broken off & lost. The two were found along the way, ended up in the bits box, and the rest is in front of you now!

Just some fun with an unprepossessing tank chassis, some bits & scrap, and dental floss. With an AC/20 for demo work, and 2 ER medium lasers for cutting with. Top speed 2/3 with up to 45 tons cargo, or 1/2 with up to 100 tons.

Ice Hellion frankenmech - the Rime Wyrm Ice Hellion frankenmech - the Rime Wyrm (Custom Miniature)
Anyone out there actually LIKE the Great Wyrm - stats or mini? I don't, either. So, for me, a rarity - an all-IWM, all metal kitbash. ER laser off a Stone Rhine [man, that is so NOT a small laser!], SRM-6 arm off a Dragonfly, drop the LRM & go 6/9/5 with an XL engine. Far more Hellion-like now!

The Ziatsev - a FWL sniper The Ziatsev - a FWL sniper (Custom Miniature)
95 tons of assault sniping goodness - because sometimes you WANT to camp out! With leading-edge technology for a Marik design - dual light gausses, LRM-20 & ER Large laser. Plus a light engine courtesy of Blackwells, and a Targeting Computer from ... well, let's just slide away from that question, thank you! Plus 13 tons of ferro-fibrous. All plastic components, plus a little clay, and the targetting fin from a Jagermech. One of my favourites.

Cicada 3M Cicada 3M (Cicada)
Now some people say the Cicada is useless. And frankly, the 3025 version is just a Locust gone fat - real fat. But the 3050 version has an XL engine and an Ultra Autocannon/5 - it's gotta be good, right? Except they still didn't give it any dang armor! Anyway, one of the easiest variants to make, and I ended up enjoying the paintjob.

Some variants - Wolfman and Thunderclaw Some variants - Wolfman and Thunderclaw (Custom Miniature)
Some variants of mine, old and new. The Wolfman featured in an early version of Battletechnology. A Rifleman/Wolverine hybrid, it keeps the 5/8 movement, plus 2x AC/5 and 2x ML. Ah, for the days when we'd cheerfully hack Unseen apart for bits ... The Thunderclaw is a much-abused, much-loved mini. My second ever mini, I tried soldering it together (love that lead!). When my sons had finished playing with it, it was minus one arm completely, and most of the other too! I ended up kitbashing a mini-arm, and added ... The Claw! Assume TSM, and more MPLs than entirely sane, on an ELH-base Thunderbolt chassis, and you're getting warm ...

The original Warhammer The original Warhammer (Warhammer)
My tribute to the original Battledroids boxed set; I happened to find some Robotech decals which let me just about replicate the look of the original. Reseen, unseen, Madcats and the King of Pain not withstanding - the Warhammer is and will always be the archetypal Battlemech to me!

Trollpak command lance Trollpak command lance (Custom Miniature)
The Trollpak was my personal merc unit from the mid-80s onwards. Over time, the unit (which started off as Marik 15th Militia members, until that little civil war thingie with Duncan) evolved from a lance to a company, to a battalion, back to a company on a number of occasions, and so on ... The 'pak ended up disbanding when the unit commander, Jock Harquin, "bought in" to the Tao Mech Works on Styk in 3047 (hence this armory); many members became either plant engineers, test pilots, consultants or security. The Trollpak battalion command lance remains active to this day, constantly updated, as the command lance for the TMW Security forces (4 companies big!) The Marauder (Harquin's ride) is a 3050 Marauder, with the dorsal AC dropped in favour of a right-hand weapon pod carrying an Ultra AC/10 and an LRM-15. The Banshee is a 3025-era variant, but with the PPC & AC/5 stripped out for two large pulse lasers, TSM and a sword. The Scorpion swaps the 330 fusion for an XL; this allows fitting of a large pulse laser instead of the PPC, and a full suite of ECM, BAP & TAG The Ostsol is now a dedicated AA vehicle with 2xER LL and an LRM-20, plus AA targeting computer (L3 equipment)

80's Flashback - the Scooby Gang 80's Flashback - the Scooby Gang (Custom Miniature)
These are some of my oldest minis, painted mid-to-late 80s when we had a regular gaming group & spent way too many hours in a sort of RPG/Battletech campaign. I've only touched them up a little recently; my painting skills are beginning to get back to that level. I still love the Awesome's do, and the Wasp - Roy Fokker, eat your heart out (the Robotech one, not the LoTB one!) This was the player's lance at one point - the Wasp pilot wasn't that unlucky, it was after all a LAM ...

The Justice League of New Avalon The Justice League of New Avalon (Custom Miniature)
Now if you've ever considered yourself a painter, you've probably succumbed to the urge to do a ... humorous paintjob or two. Let's draw a gentle veil over the clown-face Atlas, and the Jenner with the pink cockpit ... So here they are: The Grand Titan as Optimus Prime - because it IS Optimus! The Vixen as Wing Gundam, because someone hit it hard with the Anime stick! The Tempest as Captain America, because of the vertical stripes on the torso! And the Grand Crusader as The Flash (old-style), because ... you couldn't easily find a less Flash-like mech short of the Mackie! (I almost did the GC as Batman, but figured a cape would look a little silly)

The Jade Phoenixes The Jade Phoenixes (Custom Miniature)
Jason Jade (see the Jade Corvis) was part of a small but strong gaming group in their town, who ran an alternative universe campaign where they were a clan called the Jade Phoenixes. The ones I "talked to" were Jason, Dart Omega and his wife Phoenix Jade, and Jason's brother MWOAC. My Jade Falcon medium star, the Jade Phoenixes.

The Jade Corvis The Jade Corvis (Custom Miniature)
I had a Corvis which looked so blah, I couldn't think of a paintjob for it; and a Bushwhacker, who wouldn't stay in one piece. Then I saw a design for a revised, speeded-up Corvis, and the rest is history ... The design was by a young man with the handle "Jason Jade". Jason tragically dies early in 2003, hit by a car when he was out looking for his pet. Jason, this one's for you ...

The Three Bears? The Three Bears? (Grizzly)
OK, the 3 Ghost Bears! While I'm a declared Ice Hellion when I have my Clanner hat on, these just didn't fit into their Touman. And I do a pretty mean Arctic camo, if I say so myself ... Had a great game last weekend using these against my sons. They played a Highlander IIC, a Summoner and a Stormcrow. I won - mainly because the Summoner couldn't hit for nut! Now all I need is an Arcas, and another Kodiak to fill out the star (I already have a Kodiak, but it's painted up like ALF)

If it's fair for WhizKids to take our beloved 'Mechs and put them on click-bases, then the reverse must be true! The Brass Golem is an OK Mage Knight piece, but it works very well (IMHO) as a Battlemech. As usual, full details can be found in the Troll Mech Works armory!

Vertol Hell Vertol Hell (Rifleman)
So there I was in 2000, with a box full of broken minis I'd bought a decade or more earlier, that two sons had played their way through (we're talking smashes here, not CBT folks!). I managed to re-glue all 4 barrels back onto an original lead Rifleman (I can't pin). 2 stayed on, even in play; 2 kept falling off - mercifully on the same side. So what do I do? Now, I only had AT - not AT2. AT didn't handle LB-X cluster rounds, but under AT rules the LB-X would be a double-deadly crit-seeker. So - drop the two UAC/5s from a 3050-era RFL, and add an LB-20X! Then came the understanding of how AT2 handled anti-air ... bummer man. Still, this fine old warhorse (pictured here in its lance) is ... Vertol Hell!

This armory is awsome. I love your customs, they rule! I only have one up in my armory right now, but I also like building custom mechs... However, most of your stuff would put mine to shame...

PS-ish:
I love the '50-cent army'. It's uber creative. The tank you made from a door stop is really cool.

Overall an awesome group of fighters!!!! Get about 10 more guys up here and that'll be a force to reckon with!
