Some of the original Terren corporations have been operating on the world for a couple of centuries. One or more of them could have been converting Republican currency into "hard" commodities like germanium. The Coup sends everything topsy turvy and the corp's germanium vault goes and disappears. Fast forward a hundred+ years and ComStar archeological teams uncover references to the vault during their study of the planet. Terren's far enough from the center of Republican space and (at one point) prosperous enough that it could have served as a nice little vault. I.e. a Gunnery of 3, plus a range penalty of +2, plus a movement modifier of +1, give a target number of 7. You roll 2d6 vs the target number of 7.

However, you then get into the fun of having to figure costs to increase the Gunnery skill that go up as the Gunnery value goes down. So you can either take a constant, and divide it by the Gunnery value (which goes wonky when gunnery equals zero), or use an alternate method:

You take a base to-hit value, and add the modifiers to that. You then roll 2d6, and add your gunnery (or piloting as appropriate) modifier to it.

So in the above case, you might have the default value set to 4, and your Gunnery Skill is set to 1. So the target number is 4+2+2 for 8, while you are rolling 2d6+1.

This allows for increasing skill costs based on the current skill value (a constant times the current), as well as showing that some training areas are inherently superior (Clan warriors, WoB MD, and similar might start at 3).

Clan warriors get the lower default due to 20 years of dedicated training, plus engineering themselves thanks to the Scientist Caste.

MD (and similar) get the benefits thanks to forced education, various implants, etc, but their brains will be fried within a decade.

It is similar to d20 style, where you have base target number, plus modifiers, and you roll dice, and add your skill level.

________________________________________
This post is a cod am pizza ship.

The originals, and my personal Marauder, are exceptions in that they were specifically purchassed as stripped-down frames to build up as we saw fit.

Early on, he gave us two non-tonnage-specific sets of TSM to put into 'Mechs. The Shadow Hawk was an attempt to avoid insta-head-capping-cheeze, since it is designed to be heat-balanced for TSM.(unlike the book TSM 'Mechs) As it is ALSO designed around an all-energy array of Torso-mounted weaponry, I was already pushing the cheeze-factor.

The TSM Centurion does not do this. It is based on the Centurion-L, keeping the Large Laser in the Arm, and the LRM 10. The rear Medium has been pulled front, and some heat sinks and a Ton of ammo have been dropped to accomodate CASE, four jump jets and a pair of Smalls (for heat management) so this is more of a kicking 'Mech. It backs up the Shadow Hawk in the Cavalry Lance, not activating its TSM until later, (ideally) when the Shadow Hawk has taken enough damage to want to pull back. In practice, the Shadow Hawk paints a bright shiny target on itself the moment it enters melee, and doesn't know when to quit. (but MAN... what a rush!) The Centurion tends to run in, grab the Shadow Hawk pilot, and kick its way out of the mess made by its peer.

The TSM Centurion will be in the next round of postings.

-Lonely Coyote

From the black to the grave, Alpha strikes first.

Lord Cain, in describing the Dredge's battlefield performance: "... a squeegee of death..."

Courtesy of Ice Hellion

There is NO reason why you shouldn't be able to run MegaMek, let alone SSW.
