Overview
The AWS-8X takes the original concept of the 8Q, that of a mech able to stand toe to toe with anything on the field for long durations, to the absolute extreme. The heart of the 8X is a Compact VOX 240 Engine which reduces the threat caused by torso breaches from enemy fire. In addition to the compact design, engineers outfitted the engine with additional armor which gives it twice the survivability of the original Pitban 240 while retaining the same, albeit relatively slow, speed. The same thought went into the 'Mech's gyro, being both compact and armored, ensurs the 8X stays upright and battle-ready even long into a campaign.

The AWS-8X retains all three Kreuss PPCs of the 8Q. Designers also armored the PPCs to give them the same survivability as the engine and gyro systems. The Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Laser in the 8Q's head has been replaced by a Harmon Medium Laser on the 8X, however it does not receive the same armor coverage as the main weapons.

Continuing with the "Survivability at All Costs" theme, the AWS-8X architects also compacted and armor plated all of the essential systems in the 'Mech's head. While the cockpit is a bit confining for the Mechwarrior, it is thought that it's small surface area and armor plating will make up for any discomfort, especially after a direct hit by enemy weapons fire, that the Mechwarrior may encounter.

All of this was made possible by dropping thirteen of the 8Q's heat sinks, upgrading to Double Heat Sink technology, and at the same time reducing the 'Mech's skeletal tonnage by 50% with the use of Endo Steel Internal Structure. Strategic placement of the Double Heat Sinks also works as an effective shield, covering most of the 'Mech's vital systems with an additional layer of "potential protection".

The final pieces of "Survival Technology" added to the 8X are the Chameleon Light Polarization Shield and the Null Signature System. The Chameleon Light Polarization Shield and Null Signature System both make targeting this 'Mech at medium and long ranges much more difficult for enemy combatants. While it's not recommended to activate both systems at all times, as heat build-up is an issue, they can be switched on and off as the Mechwarrior desires. In some situations the benefit of being harder to hit supersedes the necessity to fire all of the AWS-8X's weaponry.

Only one of these new Awesome models has been brought to fully functional status. It has been given over to the commander of the Owens' Lancers mercenary unit, Jeff Owens, as payment for defending the 8X's factory from a pirate raid.

Variants

Due to an unfortunate accident during live-fire evaluation runs, an immediate design change has been implemented by Fincastle Mechwerks. The new version (AWS-8X-H) makes use of Hardened Armor. Although it retains the same 14.5 tons of armor coverage, small amounts have been moved from each location to give the head of the 'Mech the maximum possible  protection. AWS-8X-H can actually withstand a direct hit to the head by a Gauss Rifle without any internal structure damage. In fact, tests have shown that even the mighty AC 20 lacks the power to remove the head completely. The drop in maximum speed is seen as more of a nuisance than an actual hinderance to this variant.

It really is a beast to put down, isn't it! Even without the stealth tech I wouldn't want to have to face it; I suspect it'll punch above its weight quite easily...

A shadow Awesome.
Funny.

At least you fixed the location errors and now we know which actuators were kept/removed.

I like this design a lot. It's too bad that the NSS and Chameleon LPS aren't available in this 'mechs era.

Sorry for the re-post, just got the Solaris Skunk Werks to function on a different computer and figured I'd re-enter everything from that program.

The NSS and CLPS can be left off to make it fit better into an era, but it's still a massive experimental tech junkie. There's no loss in functionality and no weight to reallocate.

Those systems would only be used to make an enemy miss with LRMs and ER weapons while he closes into standard PPC range. Once within range, both would be turned off to avoid overheating anyway.
