Overview:
The Spartes (named after the armed men sowed from the teeth of a dragon in Ancient Greece) were a mercenary unit made of former Draconis Combine soldiers that for a reason or another deserted to join the Federated Commonwealth. Unwilling to let them near the border, they were posted on the world of Halifax, on the Periphery Border of the former Lyran Commonwealth, far enough from House Kurita not to be a problem. They were also provided with whatever designs, the AFFC could spare (old Lyran designs). Things remained like this until the Truce of Tukayyid.

At that time, the AFFC was busy rebuilding its strength after the blow they had just suffered. Unwilling to let the Clans recover but unable to do anything with their own troops, they ordered several mercenary units under their command to raid the worlds held by the Jade Falcons to disturb their supply networks.

Thus, in early 3053, the Spartes were assigned the world of Trell I. However, due to wrong information, the battalion was dropped in Smugglers Valley just when the 77th Falcon Regulars Cluster was coming back from hunting survivors of the 12th Donegal Guards RCT in Smugglers Maze. The mercenaries were nearly annihilated and only saved through the sacrifice of one Zeus that diverted the Clanners long enough for the battered survivors to flee.

After this rather brutal discovery of the Clans, the Spartes were not allowed any break. Provided with more older 'Mechs and with survivors of other mercenary units, the once more battalion was given 6 months to train before being sent once more in operation against the Clans.

Thanks to their hardly won experience, the mercenaries were much more efficient using guerilla tactics by small parties on several planets to attract more Jade Falcon warriors and facilitate their further strike. However, even if they managed to do so efficiently for the following 2 years looting several supplies caches at the same time, this tactic had a heavy price for the mercenaries. When in the middle of 3055, the evacuation order was given, only ¼ of the battalion was still alive and all 'Mechs were damaged beyond any reasonable hope of repairing.

In reward for their services and because of the low budget available for the combat bonuses, the AFFC allowed the Spartes to keep an unusual amount of the salvaged Clan tech as bounty.

Needing to rebuild the unit, Tai-i Junko Go decided to use part of the salvaged pieces to increase the cash available to the unit with the rest being used for upgrading the 'Mechs. Due to the important demand on the different manufacturing units, few companies were willing to work on a limited number of 'Mechs for a mercenary unit using unknown technology. One of the few names available was Coventry Research Facility that agreed on this proposal and set up a special team to work on the project.

Capabilities:
The engineering team of Coventry Research Facility reviewed every records of combats between the raiding mercenaries and the Clanners and interviewed all survivors to receive first hand information. What appeared from all the information collected was that a 'Mech with concentrated long range firepower was needed.

Remembering the usefulness of the Zeus on Trell I, the Spartes and the engineering team decided to work on a similar concept but lighter. This is where luck went with Coventry Research Facility as two of the members of the team were former engineers of Canopian Retrofitted Designs, a company in which according to them they had worked on a similar design that never saw the light, the Sapahi. Trying to use their knowledge to make things faster and make some advertisement for CRF as “the company that can design new 'Mechs faster than any other”, it was decided to use the memories of the Sapahi of the two engineers as the basis for this new 'Mech.

Using a 'Mech of 50 tons, the engineering team decided to use the Corean Model KL77 Endo Steel already in use with the CN9-D. This allowed the use of a proven chassis that allowed more weight for the weapons and armor.

The same reasoning was behind the use of the Magna 250. This provided the new 'Mech with the speed of the Griffin, Shadow Hawk and Wolverine, all 'Mechs with hundreds if not thousands of fights while not using a rather fragile Extra Light Engine. The Jump Jets were discarded for more weight.

Maximum armor was provided to the design to protect if from the weapons of the Clans. With 11 tons of Valiant Lamellor, it has nearly as much armor as the Zeus. It is hoped that this will increase the survival rate of the guerilla parties.

Weapons were given special care as this was the area where the most advanced technology was available.

Not wanting to be left with a useless weapon if no ammo was found, the use of all ammo based Clan weapons was discarded. Instead, it was decided to use the experience of the Zeus ZEU-6T and go for a nearly full energy load of weapons.

Checking on the different weapons available, they found out that the Series 6b Extended Range Large Laser had the longer range of all the weapons available. As such, the Extended Range Large Laser was put into the left arm.

To complement that weapon, the original ZEU-6T used a specially designed Coventry Star Fire LRM-15 but this weapon was too voluminous for the lighter 'Mech. As such, it was decided to rework another Coventry LRM system but the Coventry StarLight LRM-10 this time. This was the most difficult part of the whole process but since the electronics systems were kept from the original Zeus, this was seen as a good way to minimize the changes needed to the TarHes Ares-7 tracking and targeting system. The missile tubes were put into the right arm allowing the arm to be used for physical fights. The weapon was provided with one ton of ammo, allowing 50% more salvo to be fired than with the Star Fire system.

With the final deadline approaching, the engineering team decided to re use the Thunderbolt A5M as the back up weapon. Although less sophisticated than the Clan Large Laser, it was robust enough and provided reasonable punch and range, which were the most important parameters.

The final touch was the decision to use 13 Double Heat Sinks, so that firing all its weapons would not overheat the 'Mech. This was seen as necessary as fighting the Clans requires all the firepower available.

The last step was to name the 'Mech. As it was drawing heavily on the Zeus and to acknowledge the sacrifice made on Trell I, it was christened Dios Kouros or Son of Zeus in a language half forgotten from the beginning of history on Terra.

Configuration / Variants:
None at this time.

Battle History:

Although the Spartes have already been redeployed in long raids against the Jade Falcons, some rumours have been spread about the two Dios Kouroi, Castor and Pollux, assigned to Chu-i Arasaka's lance.

It seems that on a yet not identified world, samurai Tyrone Mclennon and Mashiro Koyama, managed by the two of them to destroy a star of Baboon that were scouting the area where their lance was heading.

So far the extend of damage done by and to the Dios Kouroi is unclear as no clear reports is coming from the dispersed Spartes.

Deployment:
So far, only two lances worth of Dios Kouroi have been produced and they have been assigned to the guerrillas lances of the Spartes.

It is rumoured that some other mercenaries raiding the Clan Space are interested in such design but no one has so far confirmed the rumour.

Ominus name, there Ice.

Impressive fluff of your own for this 'Mech. I like the speed and utility of the 'Mech, a light Zeus, I might have to "borrow" this for Dionysus Light Industries. I think I can make it all IS tech and still be just as effective as you've made it.
Nicely done and it gets my vote.
