Overview
The Masamune is a design commissioned in the early days of the fourth Succession War by the DCMS to act as an inexpensive scout and ultralight main battle 'Mech. The brief for the design called for it to be cheap enough to field en mass should the situation demand, but also to provide substantial firepower and to be able to contribute directly to the battle after fulfilling its duties as a scout. While it lacks jumpjets and does not have the manoeuvrability of its peers, the Masamune mounts a far heavier weapons package than the majority of light 'Mechs, and is capable of holding its own against the majority of 'Mechs in its class.

Capabilities
Weighing in at 30 tons, the Masamune moves at a maximum of 90 kmph - a nominal rate for 'Mechs of its size. 5 tons of armour provides adequate protection against damage, and is generally speaking on par with the majority of 30-ton Battlemechs. The Masamune's key strength, however, lies in its armament. A Large Laser in the Right Arm provides ranged firepower as well as being an excellent weapon for crippling light 'Mechs through penetrating damage. To supplement this weapon, a pair of class-4 Short Range Missile units mounted in the chest and head sections of the Masamune provides close-in punch, as well as allowing it to capitalise on breaches in enemy armour. Indeed, the Masamune has garnered somewhat of a reputation as a 'Giant Killer'; in field testing it was found to cope well even when forced to face 'Mechs up to 10 tons heavier than itself, pulling out a string of unlikely victories with a well-placed barrage of missiles fired at holes in the enemy armour. While it should not be expected to simply stride out into the battlefield and fight as a front-line unit amongst its Medium and Heavy brethren, the Masamune can provide useful missile support to heavy hitters, and is also quite adept at hunting down and taking out damaged Battlemechs whose offensive power has been degraded as they try to flee from the battlefield.

Well slap me around and call me Daisy, it isn't all that often one sees a truly effective light mech that doesn't feel like it's been done before.

Very well done sir.

It looks kinda like the Kurita answer to the Wolfhound. Neat!

Excellent work here, good light support unit and think it would work well vs 3025 light units. Have to watch exposing that right arm to fire, but otherwise, not a bad design. I'll have to field it in Megamek and test it out!

I like this little one.
I could see one out of ... being produced with LRM.

Nice job.

Very Nice. The LL is an excellent main gun for a light/medium and dual SRM-4 make it quite effective close in.

This reminds of two mechs I have done: My MBR-08 Masamune which also used a LL & dual missile launcher combo (LRM-5 instead of SRM-4 in the standard version) and the Fusilier which I submitted to Ice's historical contest. It was based on the same piece of artwork as this.

Very nice striker, fluff is succinct & well written . I'd be wary using it as a (light) trooper due to the low armour, but aside from that it's great

Very nice for such a light 'Mech. Don't quite care for ammo in the CT, but several canon designs have it mounted there.
Great firepower for such a light 'Mech. Nice job.

Give it twice as many of each weapon, and make the weapons themselves more effective.

Yeah.

That's the ticket.

drop a lower arm actuator to add another DHS?

3/27/2010  Breetai
Cheers, guys. And you hit the nail on the head, Ice; this is a 3050'Mech, well before the Clans got over their 'hurf durf who needs ammo' problem. :-) My only regret with this design is that there wasn't one more critical slot so that I could add another heatsink, allowing it to move and fire all long-range weapons at full without incurring a movement modifier.

@ Lion. Yeah, you're right. Losing both lower arm actuators probably isn't a big deal anyway as it's not as if they feature into the aesthetic of the design that much, and the design could definitely benefit from it. Removed the ECM, added the heatsink.

Nicely suited for duels.
And a plausible design for Clans like the Blood Spirits.

Nice job.

3/26/2010  MajorTom
Well it certainly is a mean bugger, if a little light on the ammo.
