Overview:

:esigners Notes:: The Devastator is one of my favorite IS mechs. I've tried upgrading it with Clan Tech in the past but I always ended up feeling like my upgrade attempts were pretty shallow (swapping out PPC for ERPPC; ML for ERML) and that the redesigns generally lacked any real depth. So, this attempt is a little different. Yes, I realize that this mech is a lil' heat intensive. None the less, I think that it's conceptually pretty cool. Enjoy.

Originally designed by General Kerensky to correct the flaws in the prototype Titan BattleMech, the Devastator can deliver tremendous firepower at long range. The chaos of the Amaris Civil War disrupted the development of the original Devastator, though several prototypes reached General Kerensky's forces in time for the final assault on Terra. All of these early prototypes accompanied Kerensky on the Exodus.

Because the Devastator was designed by General Kerensky, the mech has long received special attention and favor in the Clans. Following the development of Omni-mech technology, the Devastator inevitably found its way into Second Line units. None the less, it has received a number of upgrades over the years that were typically reserved for first line mechs. Subsequently, the Devastator IIC differs considerably from the original Star League model that is only now reappearing in the Inner Sphere.

Capabilities:

Following the development of lighter and more powerful Clan weaponry, Clan manufacturers removed the XL engine from the Devastator to improve its durability and regained weight savings from the use of improved materials. A total of fourteen double heat sinks keep the Devastator cool in most circumstances although an over zealous mechwarrior can quickly overheat. An Anti-missile system, ECM system, and sixteen tons of ferro-fibrous armor give the Devastator unrivaled protection. To protect the Devastator from surprise attacks in environments with poor visibility the Devastator mounts a Light Active Probe.

The Devastators weapons are impressive and deadly. Two Gauss rifles and two ER Large Lasers make up the major portion of the 'Mech's arsenal, allowing the Devastator to inflict immense damage at long range. The 'Mech's six tons of Gauss ammunition are stored in four separate bins, eliminating the possibility of putting the Gauss rifles out of action with a single lucky shot. For short range combat, the Devastator is equipped with a medium pulse laser, two heavy medium lasers (a recent addition to the design) and a pair of extended range medium lasers. Protecting the mech from attacks from behind is a single, rear mounted medium pulse laser.

The Devastator IIC does not mount much more long range firepower than the SLDF prototypes. It is however capable of engaging targets at greater ranges. Due to heating constraints, its medium range fire power isn't much more powerful than its SLDF ancestor either but it is capable of activating its medium range weapons at longer ranges and with greater versatility. Most importantly, the Devastator is much more durable and is safely able to wade into close range combat. These factors, combined with the IIC's improved sensors and ECM suite, have lead to the Devastator IIC being regularly used as a command mech in Second Line Stars and Binaries.

Battle History:

3050 - A few Devastators were spotted early in the Clan Invasion by Draconis Combine scouts on a Clan conquered world. The scouts were unfamiliar with the design, record of which had been lost to the Inner Sphere until the discovery of the Helm Memory Core in the 3030's. The scouts reported it to DC High Command as a mysterious non-omni mech of Assault class carrying "two gauss cannons and a pair of large lasers".

3052 - Battle of Tukayyid - The Ghost Bears reportedly fielded a Devastator IIC during the Battle of Tukkayid. Although still a prototype at the time of the Exodus, it was accurately identified by at least one ComGuard battle computer. The Devastator provided fire support to a Star of omni-mechs after a melee broke out.

3052 - Present - The Devastator IIC, piloted by garrison mechwarriors, is regularly encountered in the Clan Occupation Zone by Inner Sphere raiding parties and pirates. It has gained a fearsome reputation.

Variants:

IIC2 - Lacking Ferro-Fiberous Armor, the IIC2 lacks the AMS and Active Probe. It replaces the rear firing pulse lasers with an ER Small Laser. It carries one additional heat sink. Unlike the IIC it is able to run and fire all of its forward firing medium lasers at once.

Deployment

Appearing in small numbers amongst all of the Clans it is found most commonly among the Ghost Bears, Star Adders, and Diamond Sharks. It is unclear whether or not these mechs are still being constructed.

Nice upgrade of the original one.

Solid design, no XL is nice even if it's a little out of style with the vat-born. The inclusion of the Heavy Lasers is interesting. I only wonder about the addition of the BAP. Seems a bit of a waste if you ask me. Perhaps another DHS and some armor? Or additional AMS ammo? Otherwise, I'd just like to see expanded fluff. You had a great start and I'm greedy. =)

Yeah, I try and build Clan & IS mechs without XL whenever possible. XL engines really drive up costs and drive down survivability considerably (albeit less so in Clan mechs than IS)

Edit: Well, removing the Light Active Probe would free up half a ton but it would only free up a single critical. Not enough space for another HS. Armor is already maxed, note that it's FF. So that leaves me room for only a half-ton, single critical item. ERSL would be nifty but useless in this already heat intensive design. Flamer might have some functionality. But really, there aren't a ton of options. Maybe another AMS might be prudent but that would certainly create some over-kill and ammo waste against SRM salvos.

I considered removing a HML to free up two crits and put in another HS. In fact I just realized that by doing that and reversing the rear facing MPL the mech gets a lot more forward fire power. Able to Alpha-less ERLLs while moving at a fair clip. Maybe remove the LAP for a rear facing ERSL and bam, awesome sauce.

Thanks for the feedback. Variant and revised fluff to follow.

A very Solid mech Havoc. I think you improved upon the proto-type and it's concepts. The Devastator has been a favorite of mine as well ever since I first saw the damnable thing in the 3058 TRO. The fluff is nice, not the best but it still adds a decent shade of color. When using Clan Technology I find it difficult to refrain from the use of XL engines. This is of course my personal taste / poison. Cheers though to a great IIC model.

Overview:

Clan Wolf Occupation Zone, 3065

Captain LeGrange was running hard. He was sweating and panting heavily but kept running. Every other moment, the ground around him shook. Each time it spurred him to run faster. He darted down a narrow alley that looked like it might lead to a parrallel street. A brief reprieve; he slowed his pace. He pulled his cooling vest's quick release straps and it fell to the ground as he ran past a startled cat. As he approached a trash can he pushed off his neurohelmet and tried haphazardly to throw it in. It missed, knocking the can over, spilling refuse into the alley. He heard a whooshing sound behind him. Without breaking stride, he looked over his shoulder to see his ejected command couch burst into flames; a crimson laser beam dissecting it. The laser sizzled to a stop and the ground continued to shake. Captain LeGrange started to run hard again, his heart was racing. Captain LeGrange was running from the inevitable.

He burst out of the alley and onto what he had hoped was a parrallel street. But it wasn't a street at all. It was a wide open plaza. He looked around, there were no cars in the plaza, nor people. It was completely empty, save for an assortment of vendors carts, clearly abandoned in haste. He looked around for cover. The ground stopped shaking for a few seconds.

But before Captain LeGrange could get his bearings straight it was upon him. Crashing through a light building and into the plaza square, the giant towered over the Mechwarrior. It stood ominously.

"Dezgra scum, you have demonstrated great cowardice in the face of the enemy." the mech's speakers blared. Captain LeGrange looked up at the behemoth. 100 metric tons of death. A menacing Gauss Cannon dominated each arm, a highly accurate long range laser was afixed to each side of its torso, and its body bristled with a half dozen smaller horrors.
"Cowards are not worthy of compassion" the mech bellowed as it lifted its right foot above the helpless Captain. Under the foots hovering shadow, the Captain found just enough time to pull out his service pistol and put it to his head.

The ground shook once again and the mech trotted off towards the battle still waging.

Capabilities:

15 minutes earlier:

LeGrange's Raiders were tearing the light Binary, which they had encountered just outside the target city, into pieces. Captain LeGrange and his men were so pleased with their progress in putting down the Clan resistance that they were openly joking about it on their com channel.

Suddenly an unexpected explosion rocked their line. Leiutenant Stanson's Stalker exploded violently, its rear armor breached and its ammo bins penetrated.

The Captain spun his Sunder around and got a look at the new addition to the battlefield. He recognized it at once as a Star League Era Devastator and his battle computer confirmed it. A powerful fire support mech, he remembered, and reckoned that without support it would be easy prey for his Raiders. Besides which, he knew that the Clans often fielded old Star League era mechs in Second Line Units without bothering to upgrade them. He figured the Clanners realized they were losing and pulled the rusty thing out of storage. Getting revenge for Stanson would be easy. He ordered Beta and Charlie Lances to finish off the remaining mechs in the Binary. Then he ordered the remainder of Alpha Lance to take out the Devastator.

The three remaining mechs in Alpha Lance, Captain LeGrange included, whirled around and started advancing towards the Devastator. None of them were in range when the Devastator opened fire again. Two Gauss rounds and a large laser blast slammed into Rodriguez' and his Marauder fell to the ground. Metal bent and shattered under the strain of the fall, its left leg crippled.

"Cover us as best you can, Rodriguez!" the Captain ordered.

"I'll try, but I'm out of range, sir!" Rodriquez replied. The Captain cursed and slammed a fist against his control panel.

The two mechs pressed forward towards the Devastator.

"I have a firing solution, sir. Firing LRM's now." Johnson reported a split second before his Longbow let loose with a flight of 50 long range missiles. Eight of the missiles exploded mid-flight and thirty went awry. None the less, twelve found their way to the Devastator but seemed to explode harmlessly across the well armored mech.

The Devastator returned fire. Two gauss slugs and a pair of emerald lasers tore into the Longbow. Alpha Lance pressed forward.

The Captain opened fire with his large lasers but only one found its mark, melting some of the Devastators leg armor.

The Devastator fired again, knocking the Longbow onto its heels as it began to fire its second LRM volley. The force of 50 LRMs leaving their tubes sent the Longbow onto its back with a serious thud. It was out of the fight.

The Captain cursed. This was Devastator wasn't as much of a rust bucket as he had gambled. He knew he wouldn't stand a chance against it at long range and it didn't seem like he'd be able to get close enough to get the upper hand out in the open. He knew he had to lure the Devastator into the city.

After a few minutes of goading pop shots he had lured the Devastator into the city. They were separated by a city block and the Captain guided his Sunder around to try and sneak up around the enemy mech. When he turned the second corner he spotted him but he hadn't caught the Devastator unsuspecting. Both mechs opened fire.

The Sunder opened up with its AC20, the weapon ripped into the Devastator's right torso but the mech stood fast. The Captain followed up by firing its twelve SRM's but the Devastator's Anti-Missile System destroyed most of the missiles in flight.

To the Captain's surprise, the Devastator fired its Gauss Rifles along with a plethora of medium lasers. Energy arced across his mech and his right torso took the brunt of the impact. As the Sunder began to fall backwards a gauss shell hit his right torso again and in an instant Captain   LeGrange was rocketing into the sky. As his parachutes deployed, he looked down at his mech. It was a smoking heap. The Devastator stood 90 meters away from it, triumphant yet stoic. It's lasers smoking.

I find myself hating Captain Lagrange.

Changed the mech a bit. Also radically different fluff. Mech is on the whole better, lil less flavorful, but better combatant on the whole.
