Overview
By early 3078 it felt like the Inner Sphere had turned a corner. The dramatic reversals of the Word of Blake’s war machine in the previous year and the encroaching might of Devlin Stone’s coalition forces on the worlds of the Blake Protectorate meant that the end of the devastating conflict could finally be winding down to its inevitable and bloody conclusion. Although the war was by no means over, some people began to take stock of what was left and begin to rebuild from the Jihad’s first terrible years. This transitory aftermath was not a true finale to the Word’s rampage, but rather an optimistic spurt of nervous energy from some of the survivors. After all, just because the Word of Blake seemed like it was about to throw in the towel did not mean they did not have a trick or two shoved up their robes that no one wanted to get hit in the face with when the hammer final fell. Still, as the war years began winding down this spurt of creative energy produced a number of new designs built specifically to pick up the salvageable pieces of what was left.

The latest KCT design to enter the salvage/reclamation market comes in the very interesting form of not one, but two linked products. The first component of KCT’s dynamic duo to be released is the funnily named: Buddy Andrews RecoveryMech. Sold as part of the ZAK Recovery Vehicle Package the Buddy Andrews, or BAR continues to buttress KCT’s Jihad-inspired design approach.

Capabilities
While things looked their worst, Knightmare Civilian Technology committed itself to building Jihad-inspired support vehicles and civilian-use technology to help combat the destructiveness of the Blakist assault. Despite a rocky financial start and the prospect of disappearing beneath a Word nuclear strike the company trudged along, producing the popular Serf SalvageMech, the redesigned Porter and successful ConFab ConstructionMech for hungry customers in the beleaguered Federated Suns and beyond. Earning a small measure of solvency in the process, KCT continued to expand its business by dabbling in a wide variety of markets while maintaining its “Jihad” design philosophy. (More information on the company’s philosophy can be learned from the latest HoTech Review of the Reilly Transport VTOL)

This design philosophy reached a fevered pitch when the company was “gifted” with the semi-intact remains of a captured Word of Blake Oppie Recovery Vehicle. Dismantling the salvage provided the company with a suitable foundation to reverse engineer and design their own working version of an Oppie-type Recovery Vehicle. While not as compact as the Blakist model, KCT opted to supply their new ZAK with custom-built IndustrialMech companions. Although companion IndustrialMechs seemed like a waste of time and resources KCT engineers cited a disturbing lack of industry competition and the benefits of using models specifically designed for the work to force their construction.

The new Buddy Andrews RecoveryMech was planned from the beginning to work in parallel with the ZAK Recovery Vehicle and in one of the worst terrains imaginable – the modern man-made hell. A wasteland saturated by nuclear, biological or chemical contaminants.

When fabricating the Buddy Andrews, KCT focused on the necessities. Weighing only twenty tons, the RecoveryMech is a small machine and supports only enough equipment to work a limited number of job-types in a very specific way. Given the extremely dangerous terrain and atmospheric hazards the ‘Mech’s pilot would face, the Buddy’s structure was environmentally sealed to prevent contamination from most biological and chemical dangers while also providing a microcosm of protection against low levels of radiation. As most Buddies would be operating in “hot zones;” i.e. areas hit by nuclear weapons, the Buddy was supplied with an expensive fusion reactor. Adding the fusion reactor saved the ‘Mech’s engine from dealing with any atmospheric complications or their support crews from exposing themselves to the elements every time an equivalent ICE engine required fuel.

Since the Buddy was invented specifically for recovery work in an NBC inundated environment, the RecoveryMech features a number of helpful pieces of technology to excel in its work and support of the ZAK Recovery Vehicle. Along with the internal capabilities afforded by the ZAK, the Buddy-series takes a few of the ZAK’s best features and moves them into a more mobile and mutually supportive package. First, a Beagle Active Probe was installed in the ‘Mech’s torso to afford the pilot superior sensor information. Although expensive, the Probe has proved to be hugely beneficial during search and rescue operations and to locate hidden dangers normal sensors may miss. In addition, the Beagle Active Probe has proven to be a useful tool in combating the degrading effects of radiation on traditional ‘Mech sensors.

Besides the Beagle Active Probe, the Buddy was supplied with two arm-mounted sprayer units connected to a four-ton liquid storage container built directly into the ‘Mech’s right torso. Capable of spraying just about any type of liquid, Buddy Andrews have an ingenious resupply-adapter that allows the RecoveryMech to replenish its liquid cargo stores directly from ZAK vehicle stock without a support crew. Although both vehicles must remain motionless for the transfer, the resupply-adapter bars the need for recovery crews to leave the protected confines of the ZAK while in operation.

Finally, close attention was paid to the Buddy’s armor package. One of the worst dangers of the modern battlefield is radiation. A silent killer, radiation silently and invisibly infuses itself into everything, from living tissue to armor plates. Since radiation would accumulate on the RecoveryMech regardless of the Buddy Andrew’s construction materials, KCT engineers built the ‘Mech to easily replace its armor shell. Rather than use simple conventional armor plates, KCT designers built the Buddy to use long custom armor pieces for each location. Connected to a specialized internal latch system; the ‘Mech can literally shed its protective sleeve. Accessible through the Buddy’s many maintenance panels, once the ‘Mech’s armor has become infused with dangerous radiation, protected replacement crews can literally unhook the Buddy’s protective package and dispose of the hazardous material. This interesting feature, a first for KCT is currently being researched for use in other applications. The single downside to using the armor latch system is the relative fragility of the connections compared to more traditional armor mounts. Additionally, heavy impacts against the Buddy’s external panels are likely to result in the loss of the location’s entire armor package rather than just a small portion. Still, the ease of disposing potentially fatal radioactive materials is considered a fair trade. After all, the Buddy Andrews was not designed as a front-line combat vehicle.

Deployment
While successful now, KCT is hungry, almost zealous in their desire to build more since the start of the Jihad. Observers termed KCT’s rampant construction as the corporate manifestation of survivor’s guilt. With so much of the Inner Sphere’s civilian sector and so many industry giants destroyed outright by the Word of Blake, Knightmare Civilian Technology began to produce virtually uncontrolled. True there were customers for KCT products, but the shear amount of product manufactured appeared as if the company was attempting to combat the Word’s destructiveness by simply out-producing the losses. It was an impossible goal of course, but the frantic design and construction of over a dozen new designs in a half as many years certainly seemed to support this outlandish claim.

But even while the company as been busy manufacturing new product – the number of Buddy Andrews and ZAK’s produced has far exceeded the actual number known to have been ordered. As critics of the ZAK/BAR pairing have pointed out the designs are extremely expensive, specialized and maintenance heavy – all of which should point to relatively small production numbers. Although KCT has publically stated their intention to ease ZAK/BAR production by the end of 3078, market analysts are worried the company may have gone overboard with their latest creation; possibly sinking the company back into the same financial straits it worked so hard to rise out of in 3072.

Regardless of the company’s possible financial future, the Buddy Andrews is often deployed in pairs or lance-sized formations with every ZAK Recovery Vehicle sold. KCT’s current deal offers two Buddy Andrews and a single recovery vehicle, along with free maintenance and replacement parts for three full years for the price of a single ZAK. While a three year maintenance contract does not sound like much, the shear amount of replacement material necessitated by the design’s dangerous working environment and the fact that the Word of Blake continues to deploy nuclear weapons has the ZAK being purchased regardless of its price tag.

To date almost two dozen Buddy Andrews and their respective ZAKs have been deployed, mostly in the Federated Suns, but a four have been spotted operating with ComStar on worlds in the former Rasalhague Republic. On Tukayyid, Buddy Andrews were seen clearing rubble and spraying radioactive decontaminants so recovery crews could reach areas hit by the Word of Blake’s bombardment. Elsewhere, word has it the Lyran Commonwealth is extremely interested in the ZAK/BARs to help with their ongoing reconstruction efforts taking place on Tharkad.

Known Variants
There is currently no known variant of the Buddy Andrews RecoveryMech. Given the design's specialized niche and theater of operations it is unlikely that the design with ever see a production variant.

Another of your nice civilian 'Mechs.
I can't stop thinking "what a horrible waste of money" but at the same time, I can't stop myself trying to find an use for them.

6/29/2010 5  Warhawk
Fluff is really well written. Love the design, I might have to get a few of them for my civilian forces. Might even be useful for riot suppresion with the pair of Sprayers and simple water for them.
Could definetly use it in the firefighting role as well, though it is a bit expensive for that.
Nice job!

@Donteras - doesn't need a refueling drogue so much as the ZAK needs a pump. The BAR really only needs the connectors, which the cargo more or less takes into account. =)

But you're right, I should have made mention of the different liquid types - like quick dry concrete. Thanks for the feedback. Appreciated.

@Ice Hellion - This is no waste of money! Surely your Ice Hellions know better than anyone how important it is to have effective clean up on hand... =)

It seems to be missing the refueling drogue (a.k.a. light fluid suction system) that the fluff mentions.

I would have also liked to have seen some mention in the fluff about which liquids might be used. I'm pretty sure that liquid concrete would be used to douse radiation hotspots.

Still, it's another feather in the cap of KCT. Well done.

Overview
By mid-3072 Knightmare CivilianTechnology was starting to stand on its own. The continued popularity of the Serf SalvageMech was beginning to pay dividends, while a redesigned of the Porter was finally giving Jalastar’s Jabberwocky a run for its money. Even with the threat of a Word of Blake attack hanging over their heads it looked as if the Blakists were through targeting KBT facilities. Although the division remained vigilant to the point of meaningless paranoia the company focused most of its energies on the continued expansion of its IndustrialMech lines and garnering an ever great share of the market.

The company next set its sights on entering the valuable ConstructionMech market. Looking to gain a slice of the lucrative ConstructionMech pie while the continued Jihad rage through the Inner Sphere may have been seen as a folly by company outsiders but it was determined to be of considerable benefit to KCT’s future financial well being in the long run. Should the division not disappear in a blinding nuclear fireball, having a basic ConstructionMech available to the purchasing public would provide the company with a real sense of the customer’s needs, experience in ConstructionMech design and an inkling of possible future marketplace needs. Determining that a basic, cheap ConstructionMech chassis was the route to take, KCT spent minimal time and money engineering their newly named CON-25C ConFab ConstructionMech.

Capabilities
When designing the Confab, KCT focused on the necessities. Weighing only twenty-five tons, the IndustrialMech is a small machine and supports only enough equipment to work a certain number of job-types. Designed specifically for construction, the Confab features a number of helpful pieces of IndustrialMech technology to excel in its work. Working specifically with structure design, the KCT “Bright” Spot Welder was installed in the ‘Mech’s left arm. A useful tool for fabrication and joint welding, the “Bright” Spot Welder is a welcome addition to any construction site. Interestingly, in an effort to reduce cost, the Confab’s cockpit does not automatically darken when the spot welder is engaged. Built with only clear ferro-plastic, the ‘Mech’s cockpit is extremely inexpensive to produce. Although test Confab operators were unhappy about being forced to wear welder goggles in the cockpit while using the welder, KCT believes that easy to replace cockpit view panels more than justifies the small discomfort of the machine’s drivers. Along with a Nashan Diversified-supplied Platinum Series Rivet Gun, the Confab can quickly and efficiently erect structures with minimal effort. The only area where KCT did spend money was on the Confab’s single outstanding piece of tech – the KCT Combo Sprayer-Suction system. A natural outgrowth of the division’s work on the Serf/Vassal series of IndustrialMechs, the KCT Combo S&S is an experimental combination Sprayer and Fluid Suction system. Confab Operators can switch between spraying a particular fluid and suctioning it. Installed with a two ton liquid cargo carrying capacity, the S&S system has proven to be a valuable addition to the ConstructionMech’s inventory of integrated tools. During trial testing the S&S system was used to rapidly cool metal, remove collected water, put out a chemical fire, clean and even disinfect. KCT feels that potential employers will appreciate the ‘Mech’s versatility and has spent some effort targeting the shipping industry, where large ship maintenance would benefit from the combo S&S system.

When compared to other successful ConstructionMech designs, the Confab shows its obvious weaknesses. Shock & A.W.E Custom Mechworks’ latest entry into the IndustrialMech market, the Rosie ConstructionMech, is typical of the type of competition the Confab will face when attempting to sway new buyers. The CON-25C Confab lacks some of the Rosie’s best selling points such as environmental sealing, Industrial Triple-Strength Myomer or lift hoists. Incapable of operating in anything but a Terran-like atmosphere, the Confab is nowhere near as versatile in comparison to the Rosie in that regard, but in the same token does not suffer from having to utilize expensive replacement parts or a rare fusion engine. In fact the Confab is more than 200,000 C-Bills less than the Rosie despite being five tons heavier and loaded with more equipment. However, early critics of the Confab have already pointed out the design’s other less obvious weaknesses such as the limited supply of available rivets and the experimental nature of the S&S system which requires KCT-licensed technicians and parts to maintain.

Deployment
In spite of the hasty R&D of the design the Confab ‘Mech has made a solid showing in the IndustrialMech market since its introduction despite stiff competition from other ConstructionMechs like the Shock & A.W.E.’s Rosie and Jalastar’s modified Jabberwocky. Clearly aimed towards the budget conscience buyer, the Confab has cautiously sold to interested parties throughout the Federated Suns. Although interstellar shipping is at an all time low thanks to the disruption of the Word of Blake’s Jihad, KCT is slowly but surely ensuring that their products reach their intended destinations. With the fighting currently engulfing New Avalon the division is quietly hoping that their new Confab will make enough of a splash in the ConstructionMech market to warrant their purchase for the inevitable reconstruction of the Federated Suns’ capital. Securing a contract for the repair of New Avalon and other worlds devastated by the Blakists should see the struggling manufacturer well into the next century, or so they hope.

Known Variants
There is only a single known variant of the CON-25C Confab. A test bed unit the company hopes may challenge other ConstructionMechs, the CON-25D is a Confab ConstructionMech outfitted with a fuel cell engine and environmental sealing. Designed to operate in environments the 25C can not, the addition of the environmental sealing necessitated a reduction in size of the ‘Mech’s liquid cargo carrying capacity and a decrease in armor coverage. More expensive than the original, the 25D is currently undergoing feasibility trials to determine whether or not the company should begin marketing of the ‘Mech.

LOL I wasn't expecting to start a competition. :-)
I got my inspiration from the Rosie the Riveter stories from WWII.

Funny thing is I almost put a spot welder on the Rosie but for some reason I thought I would need 2 hands. In retrospect I realize that one hand and a lift hoist would have been enough. Maybe I should upgrade.

A competition

More useful but less flexible than the Rosie.
As always, a matter of choice.

Thanks to Donteras for the inspiration!

Overview
Making its debut in 3071, the SRF-30B Serf SalvageMech is Knightmare Civilian Technology's first entry into the burgeoning SalvageMech market. Earmarked as a suitable competitor to Vining Engineering and Salvage Team's (VEST) Hyena SalvageMech, KCT's newest IndustrialMech was designed to be cheap, reliable and easy to produce. Since its introduction, the Serf has quickly spread to worlds visited by the devastation wrought by the Word of Blake's Jihad.

Capabilities
When Vining Engineering and Salvage Team's (VEST) debuted the wildly successful Hyena SalvageMech, the industrial salvage machine quickly set the standard by which other salvage vehicles would be forever measured against and set the bar that all future successor machines would have to follow. Taking a cue from VEST, the engineers of Knightmare Civilian Technology built the Serf around the Hyena's successful design. Rather than compete directly with the VEST machine, the KCT designers selected a stable 50 ton bipedal configuration for the new SalvageMech. This left the Serf a full five tons lighter than the Hyena while still maintaining the improved musculature of the larger machine. With the inclusion of Industrial TSM, the Serf is still capable of hauling even the heaviest wrecks to recovery stations.

A pair of lift hoists mounted on the back of the Serf’s shoulders aid recovery operations, as does the sophisticated left-mounted "Iron Jaws" salvage arm. While KCT's first IndustrialMech, the Porter, utilized an imported salvage arm the "Iron Jaws"-type salvage arm was designed and built specifically for production on the Serf. Along with an internal combustion engine capable of propelling the 'Mech to a top speed comparable to regular heavy-class BattleMechs, the Serf is fast enough that it doesn’t need support to keep pace with most modern combat elements. Although it is a salvage vehicle, its role as a combat support unit means that the Serf may enter hostile zones, and so Knightmare Civilian Technology protected the ’Mech with eight-and-a-half tons of industrial-grade armor, while a arm-mounted small pulse laser provides some discouragement against attack and significant help during salvage operations.

Despite the reduction in weight the Serf also features two torso-mounted searchlights for enhanced night operations and an integrated arm sprayer with one-ton liquid capacity. Typically loaded with flame retardants, the Serf's sprayer is an unexpected and welcomed safety feature. Additionally, in the event of an accident the Serf's cockpit has a built-in ejection system designed to safely spirit the 'Mech's driver out of harms way.

Deployment
To date the company has produced six full production runs. Despite the lack of fusion engine, the 'Mech's price tag has left Knightmare Civilian Technology barely capable of keeping pace with new production orders. Although the machine is clearly designed for Terran-like worlds where Environmental sealing is not required the Serf SalvageMech is still finding its way across the Inner Sphere and beyond. However unlikely, recent rumors have even placed the Serf on worlds of the Outworlds Alliance in Clan Snow Raven controlled territories. If true, then the Serf is a true leader in the SalvageMech market.

Known Variants
In an effort to corner an even greater portion of the SalvageMech market, KCT engineers have recently been field testing a new Serf variant. Dubbed the Vassal, this variant is designed to operate in environments the Serf can not. Featuring an environmentally sealed cockpit in place of the Serf's ejector seat, the variant's biggest change to date is the replacement of the design's combustion engine for a fuel cell-based variety. Inclusion of the fuel-cell engine also allowed the engineers to add an additional half-ton of commercial grade armor to the design.

It seems to me that you should have a FSS to go with the sprayer (and complete the line of design thought from the Porter). The best place to get the tonnage would be the searchlights, since most 'mechs come with lights that don't take up tonnage.

Still it's good thinking outside of the fight, once again.

A good marketing move (ie not facing VEST on its main civilian product).

As far as I understand how civilian 'Mechs work, this one seems to have everything that I would expect from one.

Nice job.

Solid IndustrialMech design that covers most bases in the salvage department. I see no real way to improve this (although you might want to double-check the fluff, some common mistakes everyone makes.)

Nice work!

Overview
By 3069, devastation on all fronts forced the Federated Suns to pull every available armed machine from storage or support units and put them on the firing line. This stripped many engineering units, leaving them woefully underequipped for the massive fortification and reconstruction efforts with which they were already struggling.

With companies like Jalastar Aerospace taking advantage of the demand for cheap military equipment to produce a modern variant of the old JAW-66A Jabberwocky other companies like Knightmare BattleTechnology also saw a sound financial future in producing industrial material to help fill the void.

Just as Jalastar used the old JAW-66A platform for their new 66B, KBT also turned to the readily available 66A platform for inspiration. Saving time on development, Knightmare Civilian Technology division used the basic 66A frame as the basis for their new PTR-75A Porter Engineering IndustrialMech.

Capabilities
Mounting equipment almost entirely produced at the new Tancredi IV facility, the Porter’s parts are found almost everywhere, meaning maintenance is simple and cheap. While Jalastar's new Jabberwocky utilizes Jalastar’s stockpile of old neurohelmets, KBT's Porter avoided the problem of neurohelmet maintenance and training entirely by installing the Porter with a tried-and-true industrial cockpit module. Since the IndustrialMech operates through manual controls anyone can pilot the machine with enough training.

The PTR-75A was outfitted with dual salvage arms and two small lasers to quickly pull apart any battlefield salvage, while a pair of Industrial-TSM powered lift hoists allow the Porter to carry double its own tonnage in salvage or equipment. The installation of twin fluid suction devices in the -75A's rear sections allow the IndustrialMech the ability to remove potentially hazardous chemicals from a salvage operation, greatly reducing the risk to foot crews. The suction units can also reverse their operation, turning the two units into giant high powered sprayers. Potential customers are forewarned that the -75A carries no internal fluid storage and instead designed the suction units to connect to external liquid cargo units. By installing connectors rather than internal containers, the Porter saves time during cruicial salvage operations by not having to remove itself from the field to dispose of the collected chemicals. As an enticement, KBT offers two 5 ton portal liquid cargo containers with every unit sold. In practice, Porter units are well known to use a single suction unit with flame retardants while operating in the field. Avoiding the expensive and limited tracked propulsion system found on Jalastar's -66B, for extremely rough terrain, the Porter was outfitted with a pair of jump jets.

Two searchlights and an environmentally sealed chassis help the Porter at night and in many hostile environments. The searchlights in particular are an attractive feature since their arm mounts offer more flexibility than torso mounted versions.

The IndustrialMech's most attractive feature is its heavy armor protection. Built for the modern battlefield, the PTR-75A is outfitted with 4.5 tons of military-grade armor. More than capable of surviving light combat the thick armor shell lends the Porter better survivability than most industrial SalvageMechs.

Battle History
The PTR-75A has not seen any combat to-date, but a large number have been shipped by KCT to their parent company's primary facilities on Brundage to help take part in the ongoing reconstruction efforts taking place there. The Porter has also been used extensively in the clean up of Avalon City in the wake of the final battle for New Avalon and the retreat of Word forces from that world. A welcomed site to the battered civilian population, the -75A has helped remove thousands of tons of rubble from what was once Mount Davion.

Deployment
Orders for this design have far outstripped Knightmare Civilian Technology's production capabilities, with many Federated Suns support units attempting to replenish their depleted ranks with designs like the versatile Porter and Jabberwocky. A number of mercenary units, interested in VEST’s Hyena SalvageMech prior to the Blakist takeover of Solaris VII, have also turned to Knightmare CivilianTechnology to supply their orders. However, the largest stumbling block to increasing production of the Porter is the company's inability to retain a supply of 200-rated fusion engines. With interstellar commerce in disarray since the start of the Word of Blake Jihad and the loss of KBT's Brundage facilities, the civilian division has been struggling with obtaining new engine supplies. This alone has prevented the company from overwhelming the competition.

Known Variants
Every Porter sold arrives in the -75A battlefield salvage configuration. The military-grade armor shell prevents the design from being as easily modified as Jalastar's Jabberwocky, with its semi-modular limbs and torso sections. This alone has prevented KCT from designed similar variant packs for the PTR-75A.

However, future version of the Porter will include a Demolition variant that removes the lift hoists for a rock cutter, and replaces a single salvage arm with a chainsaw. A CargoLoader variant retains the lift hoists, but drops the fluid suction units, small lasers and salvage arms for a small cargo container.

There are also rumors of a PTR-variant built with modular armor. Designed to compete directly with the semi-modular Jabberwocky, a modular armor package would give the Porter the ability to quickly swap its equipment package.

Nice industrial mech and great job on the fluff.

Interesting civilian 'Mech.
I might have prefered a Small Pulse Laser (I do not know why but when I read the fluff, I thought of that).

Good job.

Just noticed the problems Donteras, thanks for pointing them out...corrected.

That's your only complaint? How about there is no place to put the suctioned up liquid? How about the idea that the suction pumps ability to be reversed suggests a sprayer or fluid gun, which is also not equipped?
This 'mech is also listed as a 55 ton industrialmech while the specs say it is a 50 tonner.

However, I like the attempt to think outside the battle. Perhaps you could remove an FSS for a liquid container (1/2 ton) and a sprayer. Perhaps if you don't want to step too far out of the rules you could also take out a small laser to make the liquid container a full ton.

Very nicely written fluff and a decent all around salvager. Well designed for the safety of the operator and practically a steal for its price.

About the only complaint is the pricey fusion engine, that makes it a bit tough to repair for cash starved operations.

Nice. A well rounded and extremely versatile IndustrialMech. Looks like he's got a big grin too, can't go wrong there.
