Overview
When Kossandra Centrella founded the Canopian Free States in 2530, she knew that the new nation of defectors and expatriates would need a military presence. Not only to ward off disorganized pirates and raiders but also to deter any effort by the Free Worlds League or Capellan Confederation to bring them back into the fold. The military defectors that Kossandra had attracted to the new nation brought a sizeable array of war machines with them, but without a domestic source of replacements, Kossandra knew that the Canopian Free States would not remain free for long.

Several heavy equipment manufacturers had already set up factories on many of the Canopian worlds to produce mining equipment. They were happy to turn extra profit by producing military equipment for the CFS, but lacked the ability to manufacture heavy weapons. Anticipating the situation, Kossandra, under the title of Magestrix of the Canopian Free States, had already set up trade agreements with the Taurian Concordat for weapons technologies. It wasn't long before traditional armor assets were rolling out of Canopian assembly lines.

However, this would not be enough. Kossandra, trained as a Battlemech pilot, knew very well the impact they had on modern warfare. Since their introduction in the previous century, Battlemechs had changed the way war was waged. Though they remained expensive to develop and manufacture, every major power (including the Taurian Condcordat) had fielded Battlemechs of their own. The CFS needed a supply of Battlemechs if it hoped to survive for long. Purchasing them from outside producers, when they were available at all, was prohibitively expensive. So, the Magestrix chartered the Magestry Metals and Manufacturing firm to develop and produce a Canopian Battlemech. As a tribute the Magestrix's Greek heritage, Magestry Metals dubbed their new design the Hecuba, after the mother of Cassandra in the ancient Greek mythology of Terra. Pleased and honored, the Magestrix donated her own 'Mech for Magestry Metals to study and reverse engineer. In 2535, after only three years of development, the first Hecuba 'Mechs entered service the Canopian Armed Forces.

Capabilities
The first Hecuba model, the HCB-1X, used primitive Battlemech technologies and was outmatched by other more advanced 'Mechs of the day, particularly the Kosechi and Icarus II. When Floral Centrella was appointed Magestrix, she immediately called for an upgrade of the Hecuba. In the time since its introduction several advanced construction technologies had been mastered by Magestry Metals and the resulting HCB-2B was much improved over the original.

The upgraded Hecuba used an improved fusion engine, allowing it to reach a top speed of over 85 kph. With a respectable speed for a heavy 'Mech, even by today's standards, the Hecuba was known for its ability to respond quickly on the battlefield. Its main gun was a particle cannon, which it used to soften up targets from a distance before closing in for the kill. Once in striking range,
its pair of Medium Lasers and octet of SRM tubes could ravage its opponents and exploit weak spots created by the PPC. The Hecuba carried dual missile bins for its SRM packs, which seemed excessive by most standards. However, Canopian supply lines were often unreliable and Hecuba pilots praised the additional endurance. The dual bins also allowed the Hecuba to carry specialty ammunition. When available, many pilots would carry a load of inferno missiles to deal with enemy tanks.

Battle History
In the years since its introduction, the Hecuba provided exemplary service to the MAF. However, the Reunification War would truly test it's mettle. Concentration of force was core to the Magistracy's defensive strategy and tactics. Stratigically, some worlds were left nearly undefended so that forces could be concentrated on others. Canopian tactics mirrored this strategy on a smaller scale. The MAF defenders would concentrate most of their force on a single part of the enemy formation hoping to overwhelm the attackers. However, win or lose, they would with draw after a short time only to regroup and hammer a different part of the attacking force.

This tactic often disorganized the SLDF and FWL forces and helped to mitigate their numerical advantage. Key to the success of this tactic was the superb mobility of the Hecuba. As the standard front line 'Mech of the MAF, the Hecuba was fast enough to strike quickly, powerful enough to inflict significant damage and tough enough to withdraw in one piece.

Deployment
The Hecuba was slow to enter service with the Canopian Armed Forces. However, when the upgraded HCB-2B entered service it became a great deal more popular. In addition, the economic initiatives of Magestrix Floral Centrella also resulted in sales of the Hecuba outside the Magistracy, mostly to the Taurian Concordat and some to the Rim Worlds Republic.

Surprisingly, a number of them were sold to mercenary commands as well. Though not as prolific as they were after the fall of the Star League, mercenary commands did exist in the 26th century. Though the Inner Sphere powers had little use for them, they did eek out an existence in the Periphery. There, independent worlds and minor powers who could not afford to maintain a sufficient standing army would employ mercenaries to bolster (or even serve as) their defenses. By the time Floral Centrella was appointed Magestrix, the Magistracy was a major hub of mercenary activity. Not only did the culture and pleasure industry appeal to them, but the booming economy made it easier to find employment.

The Magestrix, a cunning opportunist, was quick to take advantage of the situation. She offered tempting contracts to many mercenary groups that included lease options for new Hecubas. Eager to get their hands on any battlemech, many mercenaries accepted the contracts without realizing their full implications. Lacking the support facilities and personel to maintain the Battlemechs, the mercenaries were forced to rely on Canopian support facilities. The fees charged by these facilities were steep and, when combined with the leasing fees, they drove many of the mercenaries into bankruptcy. At that point, the Magistracy exercised breach of contract clauses that effectively allowed them to absorb the mercenaries into the MAF. No doubt, this is what the Magestrix had planned for all along.

By the time of the Reunification War, the Hecuba was the mainstay of the Magistracy Armed Forces Battlemech assets. It acquitted itself well in those battles, but could not prevent the Magistracy from falling under the yoke of the Star League. Then, the Star League's policy of removing nationalistic symbols from Territorial States dictated an end to production of the Hecuba. All remaining Hecubas were mothballed and would not bee seen again until the Succession Wars when the Magistracy found itself attacked from all sides. As the MAF fought a desperate defensive war, it pressed every available asset into service. Even so, the Magistracy faired poorly in the 1st and 2nd Succession Wars and few Hecubas survived. A handful survives today, but all of them have been rebuilt and overhauled so many times that they are often mistaken for "Frankenmechs".

Known Variants
Developed just a few years before the Reunification War broke out, the HCB-2D was an attempt to create a support variant of the Hecuba. The 2D replaces the pair of SRM packs with a pair of LRM racks. The 2D also sacrifices one of its missile bins for an extra heat sink, to better handle the heat generated by firing the PPC and LRM racks in tandem. Though it performed well, the 2D was never very popular and was often derided as "a Toro on steroids".

The original model, the HCB-1X, was much less capable than the final HCB-2B and 2D models. It used a primitive fusion engine, cockpit and armor composite, as these were the first stepping stones that Magestry Metals could master. The extra weight of its primitive components allowed for only one SRM pack instead of two like the HCB-2B. In addition, its main gun was an antiquated Heavy Rifle. While effective against lightly armored targets, even primitive military armor was resilient to its effects.

This choice of main weapon seemed odd, given the availability of generally superior Autocannons but was mainly due to development problems encountered during the prototype testing phase. Surprisingly, development and testing of the myomers, neurohelmet feeds, and gyroscope (the critical components exclusive to Battlemechs) all went smoothly. The biggest problem was with the 'Mech's main weapon system. Originally, the design called for a Particle Cannon mounted on the right shoulder. However, the 'Mech's primitive fusion engine was prone to power surges that routinely overloaded the cannon's power couples even while the weapon was not in use. Unable to resolve the issue, Magestry Metals tried mounting a Class 5 Autocannon instead. However, the feed mechanism jammed constantly. After months of unproductive tinkering Magestry Metals was running out of time and resources. As a last ditch effort, the Autocannon was abandoned and replaced with the ancient Heavy Rifle. It functioned flawlessly and had enough raw power to compare favorably to the Class 5 Autocannon, even if it did consume ordinance at a much faster rate per ton. When the Hecuba was upgraded, Magestry Metals had mastered fusion engine technology and was able to mount the PPC that had been called for originally.

Good fluff for a faction that doesn't get enough attention. I can't wait to see it perform. Well done

Good write up, though the Mercenary deal does seem a bit far-fetched given the time. However if they did have access to battlemechs, I would figure them to be either lights or mediums, other than that feels well researched.

Great work, I really enjoyed the read. It'll be nice to take this into combat, it's quick and powerful.

Nice work here. Outside of what Warhawk mentioned about your fluff, you did a good job researching the design. In particular, I enjoyed your Known Variants section.

7/23/2010  Warhawk
Very nice. Seems like most of us have gone into the 60 ton category and have some speed out of it. It will be interesting to see the combat tests for the 'Mechs.

One fluff concern and that's in the Deployment section. This time in history, there were few if any mercenaries. The whole mercenary trade really started up after the Star League fell (source: FM Mercs).

@Luxan: I will concede that point after looking at Sarna's page, but I doubt they had many 'Mechs available. You could mention the whole "company store" and "lease" options in there to flesh it out.

7/23/2010  Luxan
Thanks for the compliments.
@Warhawk: I based the mention of mercenary sales on the info I found on sarna.net about the Reunification War. It mentions that the MAF used mercenary forces to defend against the SLDF and FWL invasion. It also explicitly mentions three mercenary companies that took part in a major win for the MAF (Buquoy's Ploy).

Overview
During their Golden Century, the Clans went through a period of fast paced technological advancement that they have not matched since. While these advancements were not very innovative, they did mangage to proliferate advancements already begun during the first Star League and refine them as much as conceivably possible.

With the Warriors at the top of their caste system, the Clans were all eager to deploy new weapons technologies as soon as possible. This would start with the refitting and reconfiguring of existing units and eventually lead to the development of entirely new units. One of the first units to recieve such a refits was the venerable Thunderbolt.

Aleksandr Kerensky's Exodous fleet left with several of the upgraded TDR-5Sb Thunderbolts from the Royal Star League units. These would be the basis for the new Thunderbolt, eventually given the IIC designation. The Thunderbolt IIC was a fairly direct upgrade of the TDR-5Sb, but there is a great deal of evidence that this was just the start of its evolution. Records from this period are sketchy, but it appears that the Tunderbolt IIC shared many common components with the Thresher later designed by Diamond Shark and Hell's Horses clans. Other research has verified that the Jade Falcons used the Thresher as the basis of their first OmniMech, the Summoner (Thor). It has also been confirmed that when the Hell's Horses developed the Hellbringer (Loki), they incorporated proven components from the Summoner. There is also speculation that they incorporated design elements from the Thunderbolt, adding an interesting loop to the evolution. Finally, this evolution would come full circle back to the Inner Sphere when Luthen Armor Works built their first Sunder OmniMechs from salvaged Summoners and Hellbringers.

Capabilities
The Thunderbolt IIC fills much the same role as the original TDR-5S and TDR-5Sb units, though with notably improved performance. The IIC still carries the thick armor of its predecessors, but clan ferro-fibrous technology significantly reduces the weight of this protection. The weapons load remains very similar to the TDR-5Sb. The only minor differences are the upgrade of the medium laser trio to pulse lasers and the expansion of the Streak SRM launcher from two to six tubes. The other weapons were simply upgraded to clan performance specs and the weight savings of these upgrades were used to install three additional heat sinks.

The biggest improvement to the design was the incorporation of a more powerful XL Fusion Engine, increasing the 'Mech's top speed by a third. This gave it good mobility for its time, but as newer designs were introduced, it would become simply average.

Deployment
The Royal TDR-5Sb Tunderbolts were evenly distributed among the Clans when they were originally formed. Though the Tunderbolt IIC upgrade was first developed by the Star Adders, it was soon proliferated to the other clans through trials or exchanges. As such every clan had at least a few Thunderbolt IICs in its touman at one time or another. However, along with other conventional Battlemechs, it became much less popular after the invention of the OmniMech. It enjoyed a brief resurgance after the development of Battlearmor, as its weapon load proved able to counter them acceptably. However, it didn't take long to develop OmniMech configurations to take on this task as well, once again eclipsing the Thunderbolt IIC.

As the decades and centuries drug on, Thunderbolt IICs were relegated to second line duty and eventually retired by most clans. Today, only the resource poor Blood Spririts use the original Thunderbolt IIC. However, the Coyote and Hell's Horses Clans have resurrected a variant that incorporates an ATM launcher.

Known Variants
The Tunderbolt IIC 2 replaces the LRM and Streak SRM and ammunition bins with a single ATM-12 launcher and three tons of ammunition. This variant also carries a Light Active Probe behind the cockpit to help detect hidden infantry and battlearmor units.

Overview
When Nicholas Kerensky's new-formed Clans began Operation Klondike to liberate the Pentagon Worlds, they did so at the command of armies and navies that were perhaps better equipped than any that had existed up to that point. Nicholas had made special effort to recruit as many scientists and engineers as possible into his second Exodus. The goal of this recruiting was, of course, to engineer, genetically or otherwise, the best fighting force possible. In the relatively short, 20-year time span, the Clans were not able to field radically new weapons and equipment. However, they were able to field weapons and equipment that performed at greater capacity and efficiency than their Star League equivalents. Many 'Mechs used by the Clans in this Operation Klondike had undergone extensive refits or even redesigns to incorporate this new and effective equipment.

When Nicholas surveyed the military assets in his Exodus forces, he found they were severely lacking in reconnaissance 'Mechs. So, one of the earliest production lines to take advantage of this first wave of Clan technology was tooled up to produce an upgraded Phoenix Hawk. Long a staple reconnaissance 'Mech of the Star League, this new Clan model was even more capable.

Capabilities
Clan engineers were careful not to change the intended mission of the Phoenix Hawk, but only to make it an even more capable reconnaissance 'Mech. The redesign started by utilizing a lightened Endo Steel chassis and then received a speed boost, with a more powerful, but still lighter, XL engine, and an increased jump capacity to match. Ferro-fibrous armor beefs up the Clan Phoenix Hawk considerably, addressing one of the historical weaknesses of the design. Though the Clans had increased the effectiveness of their Ferro-fibrous armor by this time, they had not yet developed the ability to shape it quite as well as they can today. Thus, this Phoenix Hawk received quite a facelift in the redesign process.

Though different in outward appearance, its weaponry is very similar to the Star League original, only made deadlier by Clan technological achievements. It's Large, Extended Range Laser gives it a 67% longer striking range than the original model Large Laser and even more punch. Combined with its increased speed and maneuverability, this extra striking range makes it nearly impossible to escape from a determined Phoenix Hawk. At the same time, a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers makes closing with the Phoenix Hawk a risky decision as well. To defend itself against conventional infantry forces of the day, it also maintains the pair of Machine Guns. The ammunition bin for these guns was cut in half to make room for the larger jump jet system but still remains ample. Double strength heat sinks keep heat build up at manageable levels even when using the 'Mechs full jump capability, addressing the other major weakness of the original Phoenix Hawk. Finally, the it carries an ECM Suite to disrupt enemy communications and electronics.

Deployment
During Operation Klondike, all of the original 20 Clans used the upgraded Phoenix Hawk to some degree. Though Clan Jade Falcon made the most extensive use of it, deploying entire stars of Phoenix Hawks. After the invention of the OmniMech, the Phoenix Hawk became steadily less popular. Though most of the Clans still maintain a few Phoenix Hawks, they only appear in significant numbers with Clans Cloud Cobra, Fire Mandrill, Jade Falcon and Snow Raven.

Known Variants
When this Clan-model Phoenix Hawk was designed, both the Clans and the armies of the Pentagon worlds still made extensive use of conventional infantry forces, making its pair of machine guns useful. However, the invention of Battle Armor during the Clan's Golden Century made this weaponry considerably less effective and the ammunition bin even more of a liability. Most Phoenix Hawks still in service with the Clans have long since traded the machine guns for a pair of Small, Extended Range Lasers.

Excellent fluff!

The mech is a near exact copy of the IS P-Hawk, expect for significant technological improvements. I would probably the variant you mention with ERSLs to the main design myself, but this make better sense with the fluff.

More range, more protection and more firepower.
A clean upgrade of the classical Phoenix Hawk.

Overview
One of the many great mysteries about the Wolf’s Dragoons mercenary unit has been their unexplained source of Annihilators. Though combat losses of Annihilators were reported, the number of them fielded by the Dragoons never seemed to diminish. Strangely, no outside organization was able to uncover the Dragoons’ source for new Annihilators. However, in the wake of the clan invasion it seems the mercenaries may have been cut off from this enigmatic source, or at the very least logistics have become an issue.

Though they deny any involvement with the production of Annihilators in the past, GM/Blackwell has now announced plans to begin production of a new model of Annihilators at the request and direction of the Dragoons. The new model appears to be slightly more expensive than previous models, but appears to be much more a much more capable direct fire support ‘Mech.

Capabilities
Just prior to the invasion, Wolf’s Dragoons had begun deployment of an upgraded Annihilator, the ANH-2A. This version upgraded the Annihilator’s weapons but left its issues with sluggish speed, frail armor, and low ammunition reserves intact. The ANH-4P appears to address all of these issues. Its Vlar 300 Fusion engine gives it a 67% faster top speed, bringing it up to par with other ‘Mechs of similar mass, while 19 tons of armor rank it alongside the toughest of ‘Mechs. To address the original Annihilator’s problem with limited ammunition supply, the ANH-4P replaces the four Autocannons of the original with four Magna Hellstar Particle Cannons. These cannons provide similar range and firepower to the LB-X Autocannons of the ANH-2A, while double heat sinks keep the ANH-4P reasonably cool. The new Annihilator retains the pulse lasers of the ANH-2A to provide close range firepower where the Particle Cannons have difficulty, but its improved mobility better allows it to reposition if necessary.

Deployment
The majority of the new Annihilators produced by GM/Blackwell are scheduled for delivery to Wolf’s Dragoons Zeta Battalion. The Dragoons appear to restrict deployment of the Annihilator to other units just as jealously as with the Marauder II, but so far less interest has been shown in the Annihilator.

A superior Annihilator for a modest increase in price.
Nice job and I am sure Zeta will know ho to use it.

Just keep pounding, eh? With all those PPC's, I doubt anything will last for very long.
