Overview:

Though under gunned and a bit costly, the Gnat LAM is invaluable as a fast scout and TAG unit. Able to get in quick and get out even faster the rather fragile looking mech has earned a good reputation with pilots as hard to K.O.

Capabilities:

Built off of a modified Wasp LAM the Gnat uses an XL engine and an endosteel chasis to enable it to reach ground speeds of up to 119 km/h. While somewhat lackluster for a modern light mech, It can still out run almost all medium mechs. When up against faster light mechs it can leave them in the dust by switching in to flight mode. But what good is a mech with NOTHING but speed? A TAG system occupies the mech's left breast, meaning that if there is a Gnat around be prepared for some Arrow IV missiles coming your way. In its rigth torso is a Beagal Active Probe. This allows it to locate hiddin infantry and straffe them its centerline ER Medium Laser. Engineers also took into acount a measure of survivability. Mounting 5.5 tons of armor helps offset the mech's bulky XL engine when taking hits is unavoidable.

Configuration / Variants:

One planned variant replaces the electronics with more ER medium lasers.

Excellent recon mech, and it's a LAM, so I'm going to love it no matter what.

Nightstalker666 0 11/1/2005

not bad, its a little hard to be a critic of the design though, becuase its so hard to make a good light of almost any type and have it be able to join combat, and stand a chance all at once.

what is everyones problem with LAM's?

Trent Ward 0 8/16/2004

LAMs are the perfect scouts. There completly mobile; walk, run, jump and fly.
The Gant LAM is a very good scout. Yes it is undergunned, however, what light, electronic, scout mech isn't?

even if it does overheat, it won't be by much. Don't like LAMs much, but seems like a good use of 'em. Overall, good scout, even if it is a LAM

Lobo316b 0 10/11/2003

Nice scout mech, even if it is undergunned, could have dropped some of the cost by dropping the double hs, don't think it will be needing them even with the jump of 7, it shouldn't overheat, if it needs to move that much, it should change modes

Warhawk 0 10/6/2003

Pretty nice even for a LAM that's undergunned. A decent scout 'Mech.

Overview:

In the hay days of the Star League, numerous light and medium mechs were fielded by the SLDF and house armies. While the variety always guaranteed that no matter the situation, there was always a mech to fit it, it also placed an enormous strain on logistics. The need to supply, repair, and maintain the plethora of designs became a critical problem leading into the re-unification war. During the conflict, designers from several major Battlemech firms were drawn together to create specifications for a mech to replace the Cicada, Sentinel, and Clint. After months of work, a compromise was reached and the design specifications were presented to the SLDF.

A limited production run produced around 300 of the mechs, with many Lightfoots being given to Clint, Sentinel, and Cicada pilots for evaluation. While all groups praised the mech's thick armor, all had major complaints. Cicada drivers felt that the design was not fast enough for the kind a recon work they routinely did. Clint jocks had a strong dislike for the mech's lack of jump capability and almost non-existent secondary weaponry. Sentinel pilots were less critical of the Lightfoot, but complained that the lack of arm mounted weapons limited there arc of fire.

Stuck with a sound design but unwilling to add another medium mech to its already bulging rosters, the SLDF put the Lightfoot on the backburner until the Amaris Coup, when the need for cheap, easy to mass produce mechs blossomed. Within years hundreds of Lightfoots were produced, making them as common as the Cicada, Clint, and Sentinel combined. As the war raged on though, the design suffered, with many being destroyed, cannibalized for parts, or simply wearing out. It is only by the grace of the machine's numerous production plants and its simple design that surviving Lightfoots are around today.

Capabilities:

While meant to be highly versatile, the Lightfoot is a surprisingly simple design. The machine's frame is made out of standard materials, and while noted for it ruggedness, is rather unremarkable. The engine that drives the "Foot" is common, as the Vox 280 has been used in much more popular mechs like the Archer and Warhammer. A side-note, the usage of the Vox is a compromise, as the designers wanted a mech with more mobility then the Sentinel, but with stronger weapons then the Cicada. By choosing the Vox, the Lightfoot was enabled to run at 118.8km/h while still mounting a respectable weapons load. The surprising amount of armor the "Foot" carries allows it to absorb much more punishment then the mechs it was meant to replace, often surprising enemies when the mech continues battling when others would crumble. This has been one of the most endearing traits for both pilots and techs alike. Indeed, many tech will place the Lightfoot alongside the Crab when it comes to mechs the like repairing.

D The weapon load out the Lightfoot carries isn't the strongest available, but is highly respectable. A single Sunglow Type 2 Large Laser occupies the mech's center torso, surrounded by cooling sleeves and armor baffles. The Sunglow is very rarely placed on such a small mech, but its combination of range, accuracy, and firepower are put to good use on the "Foot". The only other weapon the mech carries is a Purity L-series Flamer mounted just beneath the cockpit. While the prolonged usage of the Flamer can cause temperatures in the cockpit to become exceedingly uncomfortable, the placement allows the pilot to put a column of fire on a target with frightening accuracy.

Configuration / Variants:

Due to the generalist nature of the "Foot" it is rare to find a combat situation for which it is unsuited. A vast majority of remaining Lightfoots retain their original configuration. Thats not to say, however, that no variants exist. As the Succession wars raged, technicians had trouble obtaining the Sunglow laser system, leading to its replacement.

The most common variation is the J model. It replaces the Larger laser with a quartet of medium lasers and a single heat sink. While lacking the range of the standard model, the medium lasers do increase the mech's damage potentail, but at th expense of heat management. This model is growing in populatity with house Liao.

Battle History:

During the Republican coup, many Lightfoots were transferred to garrisons, freeing up more advanced frontline units. But as the war raged on, the need for combat machines grew to the point that even the "Foots" were being stripped from secondline units to supply line units. Commonly used as a cavalry mech, the "Foots" were usually placed in lances with other "Foots". Whenever the line look like it was about to break or fold, the "Foots" would rush to the spot, laying down barrages of laser fire. Before the enemies had a chance to shift fire to them they would usually race through THEIR lines and hit the assaulting units from behind. Another common usage was deep penetration and recon/raiding. During the capture of a number of keep systems, "Foots" were dropped on planet weeks ahead of normal assault forces. Once on planet they would take to wilderness, venturing into enemy area at random to destroy parked units and set fire to supplies.

It was this kind of of tactic that the Free Worlds League used against the Capellan Confederation. When a Jumpship entered the Ito system and disembarked 3 Overlord Dropships the defending Capellans responded by launching their own dropships and fighters. Soon a ferocious space battled ensued, resulting in heavy damage to both side. With out ever making planet fall the Marik ships jumped out of system. Declaring themselves triumphant the defenders returned to normal defense status in less then a week. Then random destruction started happening. Supply depots were destroyed, vehicle parks set ablaze, grain silo toppled, and all with hours of each other. As weeks wore on the vandalism only increased, with only garbled reports of mech sightings to explain the attacks.

Over the course of month the defenders found themselves getting weaker, having to spread their units out on far flung patrols. Little did they know what had happed. The commander of the Marik assault forces had known that they were no going to make it to Ito, they had to few fighters and dropships to ever hop to bull their way through to the planet. Knowing this, he sent word back to the waiting jumpships, and a single Leopard class vessel carrying a lance of lightfoot disembarked and headed in system. Avoiding the same rout taken by the Overlords the dropship managed to make it to the planet. Once dirt side, it had hidden and released its payload of mechs. And the lance of Lightfoots soon reached their goal. As a Capellan dropship was taking on supplies and units for another far flung planetary patrol a single "Foot" rushed out of the near by woods. In a single shot, the mech managed to fire into the open bay, setting off tons of munitions. the explosion gutted the Liao Union, and took with it many mechs and troops.

In one week after the loss of the drop ship and a number of aerospace fighters at another base, the Marik assault force returned. Repaired, rearmed, and with much more fighter cover, the Marik force managed to capture the planet.

Notable 'Mechs & Warriors:

Mechwarrior Brims Rathuls

Known as a daring and skilled recon pilot, one would never know it by looking at him. With dusty brown hair and brown eyes, he is of unremarkable build with no real distinguishing feature. If not for his fame on Ito many would not remember him. His machine, on the other hand, is hard to ignore. Instead of opting for more traditional camo schemes, Brims has his mech painted from head to toe midnight black with varying shades of grey thundermarks. Oddly enough the "Boogeyman",as he like to call it, seems to disappear when moving at night.

A nice design using lvl 1 technology and speed to cry havoc on all the battlefield.
I can see this as a kind of little brother to the Flashman.
A nice job.

NightStalkerX 4 11/21/2005

Nice to see more canon-like desings using level 1 tech. An armor running large laser is always a fun mech to field.

Knightmare 0 11/21/2005

Always good work, and the custom pic is lovely!
cheers

Overview:

The Outworlds Allience has always occupied a dangerous postion, being located on the boarders two of the greatest in the Innersphere. While it has been spared the brunt of an attack by one of the houses, recent agressions between the house Kurtia and Davion is making the Allience increasingly dangerous. It was no surprise then, when the Allience called upon OWF to begin manufacturing a medium mech that could bost the Allience's militias. Proving adept at reverse engineering and copying other companies chassis, much to their dismay, OWF soon had a canidate for production, the Enforcer.

Capabilities:

After reviewing the Enforcer's battle history and after action reports the engineers at OWF soon began to plan out what they would do to make the mech suited for use along their stretch of the Periphery. First and foremost, they tore out the Enforcer's under supplied and heavy Federated Autocannon and worthless ChisComp Small Laser. In the autocannon's place a Lushann Redbeam Large Laser, usually used in aerospace fighters, was installed. While doing less damage then the AC/10, its lack of ammo dependence enables the mech to stay in the field much longer then the Enforcer. In the Small Laser's place a Zippo flammer was mount, though it was moved to the center torso soon afterwards due to alignment problems. The Zippo soon proved to be many times better suited to fighting infantry than the small laser ever was. (p) Next on the list of the engineers, the mech's 9 tons of StarShield armor was replaced with 10.5 tons of locally produced StarSlab/1. This gave the mech an added bost to its battlefield longevity, while also solving many of the Enforcer's weak rear armor issues. The engineers also had planned to upgrade the mecha's engine to allow for a 86kmph rund speed, but the plan fell through when it was discovered the mech had serious heat issues. So, instead of making the mech faster, the designers added 6 heatsinks to allow for the use of both larger lasers. While not exactly the mech the Allience was hoping for, the now-named Protector has proven easy to field and very userfriendly.

Configuration / Variants:

None are known to have been produced at this time.

Battle History:

While being relativly new, the Protector has already had it's test underfire. A local pirate group attacked the planet Sevon in hopes of raiding the industries there for supplies, only to happen upon the OWF plant stationed there. A lance of Protectors, awaiting shipment after just quite litteraly walking off the assembly line when they caught view of the pirates. Soon the two forces engaged in a slugging match, with both sides taking damage. The pirates, thinking the Protectors to be Enforcers, constantly charged the Protectors believing that the mechs were on the verge of being out of ammo. Again and again the pirates were forced back, soon losing their two Thorns and their one Spider battle mech in the process. When the pirate's Trebuchet and Whitworth ran out of ammo for their LRM's, they fell back to their dropship. They never made it, encountering the rapidly resonding Sevon Militia and being destroyed in short order. The Pirate commander, soon realizing that he'd be stuck between an angry hammer of the Sevon militia and the steadfast anvil of the Protectors ordered the remaining forces to split up and head back to the dropship. Of the 8 mechs the pirates came with, they left with only their Firestarter and Jenner.

Good drawing and the fluff is nice too, good job. I quite like the design as well.

Ice Hellion 0 8/30/2004

Good idea you had. It is closer to a mini Warhammer than to an Enforcer but the work done is nevertheless impressive including the drawing (which really gives the impression of being a protector).

Knightmare 0 8/30/2004

A relatively cheap militia 'Mech. I miss the A/C, which is the Enforcer's hallmark, but this being a Periphery machine makes up for it. Good fluff.
cheers
