Overview:

The compact M7A3 Bradley is one of literally hundreds of different light infantry transports deployed by militia's and mercenary infantry forces accross the Inner Sphere. Requiring a relatively low technology base to produce, the Bradley is ideal for cash strapped units to augment their infantry forces with. Unlike many "standard" APC's the Bradley actually carries enough firepower and armor to continue to support it's accompanying infantry once they have been delivered to the combat zone, making it a popular alternative.

Robertson Mechworks picked up production of the Bradley in 3059 as part of their initial factory expansion and has seen steady sales both to the local militia as well as abroad to various forces. Although production levels remain low compared to those of a dedicated vehicle factory, it has remained a steady source of income for the company and, thanks to developing technology, has even received a recent upgrade to make it signifigantly more deadly. Both models are detailed in this report for completeness.

Capabilities:

The standard APC, while light and dirt cheap, provides little in actual protection for it's assigned infantry. The so-called Heavy APC also failed to be more then a glorified armored shell for it's cargo and often fell prey even to light tanks such as the Scorpion. The Bradley was designed specifically to address these problems, providing increased armor protection as well as the firepower necessary to keep light armor at bay.

Weighing in at 25 tons, the Bradley is one of the heavier tanks designed specifically for infantry support and can carry a squad of regular infantry in relative comfort to and from the battlefield. The rugged GM 100 turbine engine propells the tank at speeds approaching 70 kph, average speed for most tracked vehicles and fast enough to accomplish the vast majority of missions. Maintenance on the engine is fairly straightforward and even inexperienced technicians can usually muddle their way through general maintenance.

For weaponry, the Bradley carries a turret mounted ZeusBolt Light Autocannon in it's turret supported by two 20mm Gattling Guns for anti-infantry use. Although the ZeusBolt does little overall damage on armored targets, it's incredible range allows the Bradley's crew to strike from signifigantly longer ranges then most other weapons on the battlefield and, against other tanks, proves quite capable of disabling enemy forces before they can even engage the tank.

Finally, the Bradley carries four and a half tons of Valiant Lamellor armor, more then the vast majority of tanks in it's weight class. It can survive hits from all but the heaviest of weaponry and the plating uses baffles and angling to reduce the chance of weapon strikes penetrating the armor at weak points and joints. Because of this feature, the Bradley is virtually garaunteed to deliver it's infantry to the front lines and, unlike most dedicated APC's, can remain on the line to support the infantry afterwords.

Variants:

In 3068 Robertson Mechworks introduced a new primary production variant that takes advantage of the recent advances in autocannon technology made by House Davion. Designated the M8A3, the new Bradley carries a GM Whirlwind IV Light Autocannon 5 in place of the ZeusBolt found on the M7A3, increasing the tanks firepower by over 100%. Weighing less then the ZeusBolt, the Whirlwind IV has a signifigantly shorter range and smaller ammunition load but also makes the tank a real threat, even to main battle tanks. The weight saved by using this advanced cannon allows for the use of a Ford 125 turbine rather then the GM 100, increasing the Bradley's ground speed to well over 80 kph, making it an even more valuable asset as both an infantry transport and a support tank. The only other signifigant change was the removal of the turret mounted 20mm Gattling Gun due to the increased size of the Whirlwind IV over the older ZeusBolt.

Notable Vehicles & Crews:

"Here's Johnny!"
The Bradley known as the "Here's Johnny!" has been in service with the Bloody Nose infantry-based mercenary unit for well over 70 years and has been engaged in dozens of conflicts. Personnel attached to the tank (including the infantry squad) have, for inexplicable reasons, shown a tendency for maniacle behavior regardless of their demeanor prior to assignment to the vehicle. On the battlefield this behavior often ends up being advantagiouse but can become a liability while in garrison. Entire squads have been court martialled for war crimes while assigned to this tank for various reasons but the Bloody Nose cannot afford to replace the tank outright. This behavior from even a minority of it's members is part of the reason that the unit continues to struggle with obtaining a higher Dragoon rating.

SSgt Tom Beyer, SSgt Angela Beyer
This husband and wife crew are assigned to the Loburg Planetary Militia and have gained a reputation as one of the best crews in the Lyran Alliance over the past 10 years. They took first place in the Infantry Support Division of the Annual Bolan Military Games in 3067 and were awarded with one of the first M8A3 Bradleys by Robertson Mechworks (a sponsor of the event) as a result.

Deployment

The Bradley can be found accross the Inner Sphere under a variety of different names and tanks that are identical in configuration (if not appearance) are produced by small companies in almost every nation. Planetary militia's are especially fond of the vehicle and large infantry mercenary units deploy the tank in staggering numbers. The Bradley is most often deployed in entire lances in order to keep assigned platoons together as well as to boost their combined firepower.

Supperb fluff with a simple, cheap and reliable machine.
Its speed is below what I prefer, but it is not a flaw. It is perfect for the consolidation role, when the infantry rolls in after the big guys, cleaning/controling the field from existing, scattered, enemy groups.
A very important role, vastly forgotten into BT universe.
