Overview:

Precentor,

The Wolverines themselves do not seem to have noticed it, but based on the same arguments that posit the Fellcat as the precursor to the Mad Cat, the Maniac may very well be the Vulture's ancestor. In addition to the two having similar outlines, they have similar loadouts and the exact same role: ambushes ending in a circle strafe punctuated by laser fire. While the Vulture's differences in several respects are apparent, it is easy to imagine the Maniac developing into the same machine if the technology had been available, and at the very least both were designed in the same spirit.

Capabilities:

The Maniac is slower and more lightly armed than its spiritual successor, though slightly better armored. Looking at it on its own merits, the Maniac's low-to-average speed may be a hindrance in its favored circle-strafe tactic
(though offset by the presence of several 'mechs in the ambush, causing confusion), though its weapons loadout remains punishing by modern standards. It faces a setback in that its LRMs cannot fire accurately at nearby targets (Clan tech solved this problem for the Vulture), making them much less useful once the Maniac has closed with its target. Pilots normally forego firing them at close range for this reason and because the 'mech can scarcely handle the heat of moving and firing its lasers simultaneously.

Deployment

Like the Fellcat, this remains a staple of the Wolverine arsenal despite being painfully outdated. While their carcasses were at first valued trophies among the Word of Blake and the Crusader Wolves (like all other Wolverine hardware), the pride in destroying them has decreased with the numbers in which they have fallen. While Wolverine aerospace vehicles are still considered impressive kills, their ground forces have come to be seen as little more than fodder.

It reminds me of something
A nice intermediary concept, too bad it was developed only after the Exodus.

Overview:

Probably the most remarkable thing about the Fellcat is that it continues to see service, though its history comes in a close second. It seems the Fellcat may indeed be the precursor to the Clans' feared Mad Cat Omnimech. Wolverine archives claim that the venerable 'mech was created by their scientists prior to Operation Klondike and saw a fair bit of use with the other Clans. When Wolverine was Annihilated, they suggest, the Wolves took credit for the 'mech and continued development, eventually turning out an Omnimech rechristened to avoid a reminder of the Not-Named Clan. Meanwhile, Wolverine continued to make use of the original.

Of course, Wolf histories (even Wolf-in-Exile histories) contain no support for this theory, and the bias on both sides makes it impossible to confirm anything.

Capabilities:

For a 'mech from the 2800s, the Fellcat boasts quite impressive performance. Equipment such as Double Heat Sinks and Endo Steel, rare in the Inner Sphere at the time, seem to have been readily available to the Wolverines. The weapons loadout seems in tune with the Timber Wolf's Inner Sphere reporting name, blending the main weaponry of the MAD-3R with a scaled-back approximation of the CPLT-C1's. Indeed, it is very easy to see this as the "missing link" between those two 'mechs and the Mad Cat. Whether this is evidence of the Wolverines' claim or a coincidence is nearly impossible to discern.

Variants:

Some of Wolverine's better-equipped frontline units have been issued kits to upgrade their Fellcats, replacing the Medium Lasers with ER Medium Lasers and the PPCs with ER Large Lasers purchased from the Successor States and adding an Artemis IV system and two heat sinks. This variant, designated FLC-4V, performs significantly better at longer ranges, but high cost and limited influx of the necessary components keep this variant reserved for high-priority missions. (BV2: 1,728)

Deployment

The Wolverines have neglected 'mech development to the point that this remains state-of-the-art by their standards; ironic since their advanced 'mechs were what gave them their edge so many years ago. While this seems to have been quite a machine in its day, it no longer has any real purpose other than as a historical curiosity, and it is bewildering to see the Wolverines stubbornly continue to manufacture the things rather than simply trade with their more technologically capable allies.

It seems quite evident to our Order that Wolverine only manages to avoid crippling losses against the Blakists by virtue of their rather impressive aerospace forces, and by working closely in tandem with their Star League allies. We believe the losses suffered by their primitive ground forces are too significant for them to overlook much longer.

I was schooled by one of these things (and its two Hayabusa buddies) the other day. I'm surprised to say that it is completely capable of going toe-to-toe with a modern 'mech.

2 millions more than the Maniac but worth every C-Bills of it.
This 'Mech has it all for a bigger Marauder-Catapult.

Nice job.
