Overview:

Long considered to be the exclusive property of the Draconis Combine, the Panther was originally used by the SLDF as a light support 'Mech. The current model of the Panther is different than the one which was used during the Star League period. Only a handful of the original Star League model Panthers have survived to this day and age and are in a pitiful state of repair. Much as the work done at the Coventry AFFC Depot and its upgrade project, designers at Dionysus Light Industries worked to develop an inexpensive upgrade for the few PNT-8Z models found in the Federated Commonwealth.

The design team continually ran into troubles with the initial project. Aside from several captured Panthers there was little knowledge about the original design. For several months the Panther design team felt as though they were banging their collective heads against a brick wall as they tried to duplicate the systems of the Star League model Panther. Even with the aid of the Gray Death memory core at the NAIS, the design team was making little headway in their project.

Help came to the design team, though it was from an outlet that few of them dared to guess it would come from: the Draconis Combine. Because of the detente' that existed between the Federated Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine, the flow of information was at an all time high between the two realms. Technicians from the Draconis Combine traveled in secret to DLI to assist in the Panther project. The payment for their services rendered was that DLI was to share with the Draconis Combine the design specifications for their newly developed Panther.

Capabilities:

The first step in the design process that was undertaken was that the design team did not want to make use of an XL engine for their Panther. To make up for the lack weight savings, endo steel was used to lighten the internal structure of the Panther enough to allow for additional armor and increased speed. The old Hermes 140 was replaced with a slightly larger Pitban 175 fusion engine giving the Panther a higher ground speed. Unlike the Draconis Combine's own upgrading debacle with their Panther, the DLI Panther make use of double heat sinks to dissipate almost all of the heat produced during normal operations. The other major change made by the Panther design team was the inclusion of extra armor giving the DLI Panther the maximum amount of armor capable of being mounted on the 'Mech's chassis. CASE was also included to protect the 'Mech from an ammunition explosion.

The weaponry of the DLI Panther follows closely with the original SLDF Panther's specifications. A Blazefire Sweetshot ER large laser provides reliable long range firepower and is backed-up with a Magna Mk I small laser. The chest mounted SRM launcher was upgraded to a larger Holly SRM-6 rack. A single ton of ammunition for the SRM launcher is in a CASE-protected bay preventing the ammunition problems that plagued the early Panthers.

The electronics used by the DLI produced Panther is some of the best available in the Federated Commonwealth. The same semi-modular electronic bay as used on almost all of the more recent DLI designs is also used by the Panther. Capable of mounting either a Guardian ECM suite, a Beagle Active Probe, or a speciality mounting of a TAG spotting laser/small laser combo. The most common variant make use of the Guardian ECM suite to provide additional protection on the battlefield. The ability of the Guardian ECM system to interface with other models to form a "web" makes it highly sought after by many commanders who also have other DLI designs in their TO&E.

Configuration / Variants:

Along with the electronics modular mounting, the Draconis Combine has its own variation of the basic model produced by DLI. Their model makes use of a pair of Guided Technologies Super Streak SRM-2s in place of the Holly SRM-6 carried by the Federated Commonwealth model.

The PNT-2DLI makes use of a Beagle Active Probe in place of the Guardian ECM suite.

The PNT-3DLI makes use of the TAG/small laser combo.

Battle History:

The only battles that the new Panthers in service to the Federated Commonwealth have fought have been against computer opponents only. The few lances of the Panther deployed within the F-C have mainly been sent to those units who have lost light 'Mechs during the Marik-Liao incursion into the former Sarna March.

On the other hand, the Panthers built within the Draconis Combine have come into conflict with the Smoke Jaguars on several occassions. The better heat dissipation ability of the DLI designed Panther has allowed for longer operations for Kurita forces. The higher mobility has also allowed the normally sluggish Panthers to be reassigned to fight alongside their more mobile brethren allowing for more honor to the pilots of the new Panthers.

Deployment:

The majority of Panthers assigned within the Federated Commonwealth have gone to rebuilding units mauled in the Marik-Liao offensive. The majority of these new units are also stationed along the borders of the so-called Chaos March.

The Panthers assigned within the Draconis Combine are mainly deployed with front-line units along the Clan borders. Many of the new pilots have come to enjoy their new 'Mechs, an especially interesting situation considering the designer of their new Panthers.

I like a lot of things on this 'Mech but I think it has the same problem as the original Panther (according to TRO 3025), the Large Laser. You have only one hex more of range and less damage. I know you are handling more efficiently the heat but this is not enough in my mind to compensate.
I would rather keep the "original" upgrade of 3050: an ER PPC, a SRM-4 with one ton of ammo and CASE plus a TAG system.
This way, you will have a far more deadlier headhunter or fire support 'Mech for light units.

Overview:

The Clan Invasion came as a complete surprise to the forces of the Federated Commonwealth. Not only did they possess superior 'Mechs, but their equipment was superior in every way to even the advanced Star League technology being used by the AFFC. Countless hours spent on reviewing BattleROMs from several recent battles against the Clans highlighted the fact that the F-C truly needed a 'Mech that could deliver hard-hitting firepower at long range and continue to do so at close ranges as well, though the long range punch would be needed the most.

Designers at Dionysus Light Industries decided to submit a 'Mech design to the DQ of the F-C to meet this need for a long range capable 'Mech design. The only advanced tech IS equipment that could match up to their comparable Clan equipment is the gauss rifle and the ER PPC. DLI engineers decided to modify their highly successful Hoplite into a more direct fire long range weapons carrier.

Capabilities:

The first upgraded Hoplite produced by DLI made use of, at that time, a revolutionary internal structure made from endo steel. The new version of the Hoplite also makes use of the same internal skeleton. The same powerplant of the upgraded Hoplite remains, even though the 'Mech still remains slow when compared to other medium 'Mechs its vast amount of weaponry more than makes up for that shortcoming. The heat dissipation circuit has been retained mainly because of the high heat levels of the ER PPC. The newest feature of the revised Hoplite is its reliance on the new StarGuard ferro fibrous armor. Even though the 'Mech carries one less ton of armor the ferro fibrous armor still gives it maximum armor, a necessity when fighting the Clans. CASE was included to protect the side torso of the 'Mech from a catastrophic failure of its gauss rifle.

Rather than carrying a massive Arrow IV artillery system, an equivalent massed Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle replaces it for a more direct-fire approach to fire support. A massive weapon system not seen since the Star League era, the gauss rifle carried by the Hoplite gives it a comparable system with excellent armor penetration capabilities. Three tons of ammunition gives the GR plenty of ammunition for almost any combat situation. Supporting the GR is a brand new Magna Firestar ER PPC carried where the LL was on the HOP-5D. The ER PPC has a comparable range to the Clan model, though it doesn't do as much damage. The ER PPC, GR combo gives this model of the Hoplite excellent firepower for a small increase in price making it an attractive buy still for many customers.

Configuration / Variants:

The original prototype did not mount an ER PPC, instead it retained the original model's LL and carried an additional ML. The armor was the same as on the HOP-5D. The prototype was changed when it became known that an ER PPC had close to the same long range as the GR.

Battle History:

Deployed with several newly transferred F-C regiments along the Clan front, the upgraded Hoplite is seeing combat alongside its artillery support version on the frontline. On such engagement where the long ranged firepower of the Hoplite was best seen was during the defense of Pandora by elements of the Gray Death Legion. Legion Hoplites were instrumental in laying down a heavy barrage long ranged firepower that kept the Jade Falcons from noticing the Battle Armored Infantry until they were close enough to do some damage to the Clan force.

Several Hoplites were deployed with the Fed Com force that targeted Twycross. While their role in that IS offensive was downplayed considerably because of the heroism of Kai Allard-Liao, the Hoplites proved to be deadly hunters in the gigantic Diabolis storm. Several Jade Falcon second-line 'Mechs were taken out by their heavy firepower.

Deployment:

Deployed primarily along the Clan front against the Jade Falcons. Several high profile mercenary and House troops have received the upgraded Hoplite.

Overview:

(author's note: The criticals for the Arrow IV should be 10/5 for the LA/LT.)

A relatively uncommon 'Mech seen only in small numbers with Wolf's Dragoons, the Hoplite is now being produced by Dionysus Light Industries as a medium fire support 'Mech for the Federated Commonwealth. With their regiments ravaged by the 4th War, the Dragoons were eager to acquire additional war machines and equipment, by early 3030 DLI was capable of producing 'Mechs for the Dragoons. Based off of an ancient Star League design, the Hoplite in use by the Dragoons originally carried a medium calibur autocannon and a small missile rack.

The upgrade of the Salamander turned it into a primier scout and spotter. The TAG spotting laser brought back the usage of 'Mech-based artillery. Another piece of Star League technology that has been used on the Hoplite is the Arrow IV missile artillery piece. Combined with the TAG spotting laser carried by the Salamander, the Hoplite's Homing missiles can give an opponent a truly bad bay.

Capabilities:

The original chassis of the Hoplite has been modified to make use of endo steel structural members. The endo steel members are far more efficient than the old foamed titanium "bones" and they make the skeleton of the Hoplite sturdier. The old DAV 220 engine remains giving the Hoplite a similar speed profile as the F-C's Enforcer and is similar to that of heavier machines. The heat dissipation circuit has been upgraded to make use of the new double chambered heat exchangers now common on several other DLI designs. While its speed is slower than other medium 'Mechs, the armor carried by the Hoplite is equal to that carried by the fearsome Marauder. CASE has been added to this variant of the Hoplite to protect against ammunition explosions.

The armament of the upgraded Hoplite has changed the most from other variants. The small LRM rack has been replaced by a massive Arrow IV artillery system. The extreme range of the Arrow IV system gives the Hoplite an even longer ranged weapon system than it currently had. Four tons of ammunition adequately supplies the Hoplite with enough missiles for several engagements. A mix of standard area-affect rounds and the specialized Homing rounds can be carried in a even mix by the Hoplite. The PPC originally mounted in the DLI variant of the Hoplite has been replaced with a Magna Mk III Heavy Laser. The laser provides good firepower and is there more to discourage attacks by enemy 'Mechs.

Configuration / Variants:

The original -4D model of the Hoplite has another variant that replaces the heat exchanger system with the new DHS and revamps the weaponry carried by the 'Mech. A larger LRM 20 slaved with an Artemis IV FCS along with an additional ton of ammunition gives this model improved long range firepower. The PPC remains, though a medium laser has been added giving this model some close range weaponry.

Battle History:

The primary use of the "new" version of the Hoplite is fire support at long range. Normally deployed alongside Archers, Crusaders, Thunderbolts, and now Salamanders; the Hoplite complements them rather nicely. The Hoplite has also been seen in several command lances of the newly formed Federated Commonwealth Corps. Several newly formed fire support lances also make use of the Hoplite along with Salamanders to spot for them.

Deployment:

The Federated Commonwealth has begun to deploy the Hoplite as in several regiments. The Hoplite is normally deployed with 'Mechs that have short ranged weaponry to make up for its own light short ranged armament. 'Mechs like the Giusarme also produced by DLI is normally deployed along with Hoplites in several Davion and Steiner regiments.

The team concept of pairing a Hoplite with a Salamander has created several new lance and company configurations that take advantage of their compatibility in several F-C regiments. The majority of these pairings are found in the new F-C RCT Corps.

Overview:

Following the takeover of the Federated Commonwealth by Katherine Steiner-Davion, many companies began to experience sublte machinations by the despotic ruler. Those worlds closest to New Avalon were the hardest hit by these "reforms." Even though the majority of the workers and many of the executives at Dionysus Light Industries were staunch Davion supporters, a small faction within the Board of Directors tried to curry favor with the new (and illegal) Archon-Princess. One of the ways that they tried to curry her favor was to begin to produce heavier 'Mechs than was the norm at DLI. The board assumed that if they started to manufacture heavier 'Mechs they would get more contracts from the pro-Steiner faction of the military.

In a move decried by most of the company, the Board of Directors pushed forward the design specifications of the Arthurian. The name of the newest DLI 'Mech was a play on the words of the Archon-Princess' mother's middle name and on the bond many warriors in the Federated Commonwealth felt towards the mythical king of the same name.

Capabilities:

Outwardly the Arthurian resembles the Thug, not only was the 'Mech's armor shaped to follow this appearance but it also complements the other knock-off SLDF designs produced by DLI. Endo steel was used to form the 'Mech's internal chassis, though most of the output of the L3 facility has been sent to New Avalon in a continuing appeasement policy to the Archon-Princess. A commonly produced GM 300 fusion engine gives the Arthurian a higher top speed than the Thug and allows the 'Mech to sustain more damage than other designs using an XL-engine. Double heat sinks provide adequate cooling capabilities, though repeated Alpha-Strikes will cause high heat levels and should be avoided if at all possible. The armor protection is StarGuard ferro-fibrous, which provides excellent protection for the Arthurian. CASE has been mounted in each side torso to prevent excess damage from ammunition explosions.

The armament of the Arthurian is based around arm mounted ER large lasers in a mounting similar to that of the Thug. The arrangement allows the 'Mech to engage in physical combat without damaging the delicate focusing crystals in each arm. Backing up the arm mounted lasers is a pair of torso mounted Streak SRM 4 racks. Each rack is supplied with a single ton of ammo in a CASE-protected bay and provides excellent ammunition usage rates because of the Streak technology.

Configuration / Variants:

Mainly because of the status of the Arthurian there are no registered variants, though the Board of Directors is hedging on the acceptance of the Arthurian by the AFFC as a means to push through several other variants. Time will tell if this is the proper case for a 'Mech shunned by most of the workers at DLI.

Battle History:

A small number of Arthurians were transfered to the 3rd Donegal Guards on Kentares. Their use of the 'Mechs as a mobile reserve enabled them to escape destruction at the hands of the vengeful Duke Dresari on his return. Complemented by Uziels, the few Arthurians that survived the heavy fighting on this cursed world were captured by the Draconis Combine during their own reprisal attacks on the former Federated Commonwealth.

Deployment:

Aside from several Arthurians stationed with the 3rd Donegal Guards, the majority have been sent to New Avalon to fill out the ranks the 3rd Robinson Lancers being formed there.

Nice design

How did i miss this nice mech. Need a rating for the work and the fluph.

Ice Hellion 0 7/19/2004

Even good people can make mistakes but this 'Mech is really a good one in spite of its troubled background.
It can fight in long campaigns and provide a decisive punch when needed. The only problem is that to me it does not sound Steiner at all (maybe too light and mobile still) but rather Davion (even the name is a reminder of the Order of Excalibur).
A good addition to your armoury and to the Federated Commonwealth forces.
