A good upgrade probably close to what the Royal Units of the SLDF would have had.
However, it is probably a bit too packed with lvl 2 tech to be deployed in 3050 as the Crab was provided by ComStar to the Draconis Combine prior to the War of 39. If you consider this as a variant produced by and for ComStar, it might work.

Overview:

This is the Ghost Bear's Version of the Pillager-C.

Capabilities:

Replacing all of the energy weapons with Pulse variants greatly increases the likelyhood of the Mech's pilot hitting his target, even while jumping.

Configuration / Variants:

The only variant of this design is that used by the Diamond Sharks.

Battle History:

When teamed with lighter, more mobile mechs, this unit has shown itself to be quite formidable as an urban or mountainous terrain combatant.

Deployment:

The Ghost Bears usually place these mechs in the PGCs stationed on their border with the Draconis Combine. This mech can frequently be found fighting beside Grizzly and Ursus class Mechs. The only Pillager-GB seen outside the Ghost Bear Dominion is the one piloted by a former Nova Cat mechwarrior named Sigurd, who seemingly abandoned his Clan shortly after the Annililation of Clan Smoke Jaguar, only to reappear almost 2 years later commanding a Mech battalion in the first regiment of Bohme's Pythons. How he came to possess the mech, and why he would stoop to living as a mercenary, are unknown. Only two things are known for certain about this man: He refers to his mech as "Greyfell, my faithful companion", and that he claims he left his Clan as a result of a Vision he had during the Campaign against the Jaguars.

I agree with Ice Hellion. Easily a very good design.

3/8/2005  Ice Hellion
A nice upgrade clearly bringing the firepower of the Clans on anyone foolish enough to question them.
A good job.

Overview:

This upgraded Star League era design is in use by Clan Diamond Shark, who gained a handful of these Mechs when they won a Trial of Possesion for a Brian Cache once owned by Clan Ghost Bear. Although the Sharks aren't known for their love of Assault Mechs, they decided to keep these instead of trading them to another Clan. The Sharks kept them because the Mechs possess two qualities that they admire: they were (relatively) cheap to upgrade and are inexpensive to maintain.

Capabilities:

With Clan-tech armaments replacing the standard weapons, this mech gains all the obvious advantages that such an upgrade would imply. The addition of an Active Probe as well as an ECM suite to the right and left torsos respectively, are modifications that should help the mechs in their assigned role as bodyguards for merchants .

Configuration / Variants:

None

Battle History:

As the few mechs of this design in use are assigned to protect merchant ships, the only combat they are likely to see is the occasional defense from Bandit raids or maybe a few Trials of Possession for control of goods and services needed by their unit.

Deployment:

In a seemingly odd move, the Diamond Sharks have placed these mechs with forces protecting various merchant vessels, usually as part of a mixed forces Star consisting of 1 Pillager-C and 4 points of Battle Armor. It is thought that the use of such forces are as follows: the Elementals act as close-in bodyguards for the Merchants during various Dirt-side operations, while the Pillager acts as a visible sign of Clan might. Plus, it probably helps to have 100 tons of Tall, Dark, and Deadly on your side of the table when you're engaged in business negotiations.

The pillager has way too many DHS's imho. Why waste so many tons on being able to use your long range weapons along with the short ranged one's? I think the pillager would be better off if you drop 4 DHS's and upgrade the medium lasers to MPL's. Just leave the CERLL out when up close and you'll hit better with the meds.

3/4/2005  Ice Hellion
Obviously, an upgrade with Clan tech is superior to the original but while it keeps the original feeling, I find it lacks something (plus the concept of a 23,000,000 being thought of "cheap" by a Merchant Clan is something amazing).

3/4/2005  Ek chuah
I meant that the upgrade was cheap, not the mech. The Sharks were supposed to have gotten them essentially for free, and therefore the initial cost of the mech was not an issue. Compared with similar upgrades by other Clans, it was easier to simply increase the effectiveness of the design's basic layout than to waste time, energy, & resources creating an alternative weapons setup.

A slightly lesser range but also a slightly better heat management and the capacity to better use its firepower.
A clean upgrade.

Overview:

This is my idea of what a Clan Ghost Bear Supernova might look like.

Capabilities:

Four Large Pulse Lasers coupled with a Targeting Computer gives this mech superior accuracy compared to the NC version. The shorter range of the LPLs aren't as much of a disadvantage as they seem, because this variant is meant to be used defensively in built-up areas, not as a sniper like the NC version.

Configuration / Variants:

N/A

Battle History:

N/A

Deployment:

All of the Ghost Bears' Supernovas are stationed with PGCs located along their border with Clan Wolf.

User Reviews

Less firepower, less range but a more precise firepower, less heat problem and more armor.
As you mentionned, in built-up areas, this 'Mech is definitely in its playground.
I do wonder why it has to be considered a 'Mech from Clan Ghost Bear?

An interesting upgrade of the Hunchback converting it into a small Archer and it would really shine into this fire support role.
A bit of fluff to explain your choices would have been welcomed.

Overview:

This mech belongs to Captain Thomas "Black Cat" Greer, who has used it, in various versions, since he aquired it during his time as the commander of a Fire-lance in the 12th Star Guards mercenary unit. Having survived his company's complete destruction at the hands of Clan Jade Falcon on the world of Steelton, he then somehow managed to escape from the planet Wotan when the remainder of the first and second regiment were crushed by the Falcons. He earned the nickname Black Cat from his ability to always come out of a battle relatively unscathed, while his friends & enemies alike are nearly always the worse for the wear. Some suspect his "luck" is due more to his willingness to let others bear the brunt of combat than to any sort of divine intervention, but Col. Bohme believes that Thomas is truly blessed with the gift of what he likes to call "Combat Prescience".

Capabilities:

Armed with 2 of the newly Renovated PriMCo Factory's Improved LRM-20's (iLRMs for short), 4 arm-mounted Medium Lasers, and increased mobility with the installation of Jump Jets, this mech has surprised many an opponent with it's improved firepower and maneuverability. The mech's chassis has been replaced with endo-steel to free up the needed tonnage for the addition of 3 Double heat sinks, to help with the increased heat output of this variant.

Configuration / Variants:

None

Battle History:

Captain Greer has continually pushed this upgraded machine to it's limits in every combat situation he has been in and it has yet to let him down.

Deployment:

This Mech belongs to the Commander of the 122 company (Known as the Lucky Thirteen, because the unit thinks of Captain Greer's black cat Jinx, which was given to him as a joke, as the honorary 13th member of the company) of the unit Bohme's Pythons.

That's the thing: they're not supposed to be Clan-tech. It's just that the weapons list does not include the weapons I use in my campaign, so I have to use the standardized equivilent.
The iLRMs I use have the same range profile as standard IS LRMs, including minimum effective range, but weigh the same, and take up the same number of Critical spaces, as the Clan-tech launchers.
The Launchers are meant to represent a halfway point between IS and Clan technologies, and therefore a compromise, such as that which might have occurred in the Clans leading to the development of their Invasion-era weapon systems.

Ice Hellion 0 3/2/2005

Another interesting idea but once more it is a lvl 3 mixed 'Mech.
The extra firepower provided by the medium lasers and the extra mobility of the jump jets are nice things.
However, I would prefer to have a pure lvl 2 Bombardier with Inner Sphere LRM-15 instead of Clan LRM-20.
