[This design was meant to be incorporated into the canon of our MM server "The Shack" but was not accepted. Have a look at the other Archer variants in "Chair of Military History" to see the fluff in which it was meant to be embedded.]
The ARC-2KT1 is an oddity in the history of the Star League. It was one of the few `Mech configurations, which were designed for a great house and got adopted by the SLDF. For unknown reasons, hard facts about this model of the widely-used Archer series are scarce. The reader is advised to remain sceptical about the details of this report. While efforts were being made to represent as a complete review of the history of this particular BattleMech as possible, many of the available second-hand sources are far from impeachable. In fact, some are poems, which might border on the fabrication of legends, but more reliable evidence was not to be found.
Nevertheless, the ARC-2KT1 bears so many similiarities to the kuritan model of the Archer, which is still in use today, that little doubt about its origin is left. Obviously the Terran Hegemony copied and retooled the 2K series. Still, we have no sources available, which could reveal which company manufactured it for the League or on which planet this mysterious factory might have been located. Speculations among our esteemed colleagues put it at one of the asteroid-based facilities in the Al Na´ir system, but as long as we are denied access to the Combine´s historical archives this must remain an educated guess.
The preceding events, that lead to its creation are common knowledge, though. During the reign of Urizen Kurita occured an phenomenon, which was fostered by the recent revival of japanese culture in the realm of the dragon. At that time Michael Cameron´s Council Edict 2650 had limited the size of the armed forces of the Leagues´ member states, which resulted in the discharge of a significant amount of MechWarriors, formerly in the service of House Kurita. Inspired by the Combine´s martial tradition (and the necessity to earn their livings) many of them turned to the career of a Champion MechWarrior, wandering around the realm and challenging other pilots to duels of honour. These travels were made on House Kurita´s expense, which had its own political reasons to find an appropriate activity for a group of unemployed warriors. These tours often included garrisons of the Star League´s Regular Army, where these so-called "Ronin" challenged the most experienced soldiers to single combat.
An integral part of these travelling MechWarriors´ codex was to prefer adversaries with the same BattleMech as themselves, so that the duel became a pure contest of skill and courage, which, from their point of view, contributed to the participants´ honour. During the first clashes, this honour mostly went to the kuritan pilots. And no matching saw more beaten Star League pilots, than those in which Archer stood against Archer. It became painfully evident, that, while an excellent support unit, the Regular Army´s Archer variant was outclassed, when forced into a one-on-one situation.
Michael Cameron´s generals, though at first outraged by the humilation their pilots had suffered at the hands of the kuritan Ronin, eventually saw merit in the weapon configuration and demanded from their administration to straight forward copy it. (A point which is passed down to us by a handful of contemporary haikus, mocking the League´s embarrassment about being ordered to immitate a member state, which they regarded as technologically inferior.) Although it is not known when exactly this happened, we do know that it must have been before the year 2736. During the last Martial Olympiad a MechWarrior at the controls of a 2KT1 Archer participated and, much to the delight of the assembled nobility of the Terran Hegemony, bested his opponent, who fought for House Kurita.
Despite the secrecy pervading the history of the ARC-2KT1, the design itself was remarkably pedestrian. Whoever designed and produced the `Mech had choosen not to make any major changes or to incorporate complex and costly building materials for its internal structure and armour. As a direct copy of the 2K variant it kept its weapon layout of two long range missile rackets with 15 tubes each and two large lasers. The ammunition storage compartment is similar to those that can be found in the other Archer models of the Regular Army and installed with a similar security system of cellular containers and ferro-fibrous dividers. As the original 4 tons of ammunition were retained the 2KT1 could remain fighting for a longer period, before it had to retreat to resupply, in comparison to the main series.
Learning from the mistakes of others, the two high-energy lasers, which seem to be 1 to 1 conversions of the 2K´s Harmon large lasers, were mounted on the outer sides of the lower arm cuffs. Positioned midway between hand and elbow joints the emanated waste heat did not interfere with the arms´ myomers, sparing the machine the frequent tearing of myomer threads, that had plagued the 2RT2 model. Another affirmation of the assumed time-line of its production. As we have neither reports of complaints or paises, the lasers seemed to have worked in performance norms, although the cases, that housed their focusing crystals are of note. In the original blueprints the space just below the mounts, which resemble a flattened tank turret, amazingly was left empty. Comparing the shape of the waste space with contemporary part lists implicated, that a movement system had been destined, which would have allowed the energy weapons to be brought to bear in the unit´s rearward firing arc, when the arms would have been aligned properly. In regard to the `Mechs intended deployment in the Star League military and its projected mission parameters, such a feature would have been a considerable advantage. There is no record of the reasons why the designers abandoned this idea, but drawing parallels to the problems encountered by the creators of the 2RT2 variant would be a fair assumption, especially when taking into account, that eventually an extenstion of the coolant artery filled the hitherto empty space.
A real departure from the original specification can be found in the engine shielding, though. While making use of the time-tested VOX 280 fusion core, the cooling jacket enclosing the core was almost doubled in size. A subtle system of two chamber circuits and strategically placed auxiliary pumps ensured that the flow of liquid nitrogen in the surrounding reservoir accelarated by more than 40% and that a part of the fluid could cool off in the second chamber. This imaginative component allowed for much higher core temperatures than usual configurations and greatly increased the Archer´s performance on the battlefield. At the same time the frequency of situations, in which the internal control system had to vent a portion of the heated and expanding nitrogen to avoid dangerous pressures, dropped significantly. Often considered a minor factor, this made the machine even less dependant on mobile or stationary support facilities.
ARC-2R The baseline model.
ARC-2RT1 The SLDF´s standard version, issued as a field modification kit during the last year of the Reunification Wars.
ARC-2RT2 The intended successor variant, introduced in the 2680ies.
ARC-3RC The lance leader conversion, commissioned shortly before Operation Liberation.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
The Grey Runner
Though the following paragraph can by no means verified irrefutably, as it rests solely on a handful of eye-witness accounts, the institue deemed this historical sidenote as too remarkable as to deny their readers the few informations, that could be gathered about this mysterious ship. According to these witnesses, at least on two occasions after General Kerensky´s operation in the periphery an unidentified Union-class dropship flying under nondescript, grey colours, appreared at the current location of his temporary headquarters, every time unloading a company´s worth of 2KT1 Archer `Mechs. If one is to believe these testimonies, the ship was a blockade runner from Al Na´ir acting in secrecy to support the general´s campaign. The close-mouthed crew is reported to be of "oriental-kuritan" origin and talking in Japanese among themselves, which would throw up several delicate questions. If those crew members were indeed citizens of the Draconis Combine, how did they get in possession of war machines that were produced at a world listed in the contemporary maps as being under firm control of the Terran Hegemony? Taking Lord Minoru Kurita´s political finesse into account, it is conceivable, that he received the right use the factories in the asteroid belt above Al Na´ir for his own house military, as an "encouragement" to stay neutral in the upcoming conflict. Experts in naval navigation and surveillance affirmed, that an asteroid belt, rich in radioactive cobalt compounds and carbide would make detecting an intruder by bypassing civilian traffic or planet-bound satellite grids extremely difficult, further backing the Al Na´ir theory.
Still, the possibility, that Lord Kurita secretly aided the desposition of Stefan Amaris, would cast a different light on the events and especially on his role in them. Doing so with the very factories, he had received as a bribe to stay out of the conflict, would be anything but an untypical move for all we know about the Coordinator. Reluctant to jump on any conclusions, the institute, sadly, has to leave the interpretation of this source and its far-reaching implications to its esteemed readers.
The ARC-2KT1 did not see widespread use. In the SLDF´s strategic doctrine there was no place for what less charitable spectators called "a mere duel `Mech", regardless of how much public attention the challenges of the Kuritans had received. But far-sighted men in the Regular Army saw another way to capitalize on the war machine´s qualities. Never intended as a replacement for the front-line RT series it was distributed in small numbers to several independent regiments. Although the size of Star League formations eclipsed anything that a modern state in the Inner Sphere can field, few people envision how vast a territory it had to control. Additionally to the regular population centers, countless of almost uninhabited or technologically backward worlds had to be conquered, secured, patroled and supervised. Sometimes a regiment would find itself disitributed to three or four planets when hunting pirates or executing small scale operations. Under such circumstances the 2KT1 showed its true potential. Able to act more independent of support personell and lance mates, who kept the opponent at bay, it had a clear advantage over the more common configurations. It wasn´t restricted to use either its long or short range armament and its sophisticated cooling system gave it a steadfastness that few other `Mechs could match. Many pilots, who had frequently participated in such missions, gained a reputation of being wild cards - self-reliant and unpredictable. While their undeniable success commanded their comrades´ admiration, more often than not, these "lone wolves" were met with distrust or envy.

Nice fluff, nice redesign. Feels like a real part of the game back story!

Well done. Nice fluff; nice mech.
Wipes away a tear
Now that's a Archer that I'd be proud to pilot. As nasty up close as it is at range.
What Magermh said...
Where did you find that old pict. Old Archer player is going senile but loves the mech. Thanks for the good fluff too. Five O'
Your fluff is quite good, it makes the mech feel as if it is very much a part of the history of the SLDF.
As for the rest of the mech, it is a solid, straightforward upgrade of the 2K. As with its predecessor there will likely be some issues with playing the ranges properly against more mobile opponents, but against the 4/6 mechs that were the more common heavies of the era it shouldn't be a problem.
All in all it's a good, refreshingly fluffy mech.
Nice, I always like the Kuritan mech but this even better. With only a minimum use of L2 tech too. The fluff make the mech.
Now some one is going to complain about alpha and range bands. This mech can not Alpha all day long. But the using the two LL as hole punches fallowed by LRMs as Critical seekers will be deadly.
So do not make my mistake and feed the Mediocrates.
