Following the success of both the refitted Vincent and Congress class warships by the Phoenix Shipyards, the SLDF Admiralty issued a call for specialized vessels to meet the needs of the growing Intelligence Command.   During the original Star League, Intelligence Command vessels were a hidden, though present within almost every realm.   Even though the Great Refusal brough about the end of the Clan Invasion, the Truce of Tukayyid has run its course and nothing now binds the Clans in their attempt to claim Terra as their own.   Even with the loss of Terra to the Word of Blake, the birthplace of humanity holds special significance to everyone man, woman, and child in the whole of the Inner Sphere.

It was through the efforts of the Dropship Irregulars that the Phoenix Shipyard was able to produce a dedicated special-operations warship.   With the old staples of the Terran Hegemony and the Star League gone past no longer in production, it became a monumental task to develop a specialty warship for its intended role of spying on both domestic and foreign threats.   Support from Commanding General Kurita along with the continued upgrades being conducted at the Phoenix Shipyards has allowed the SLDF Admiralty to continue production on a number of the new Northampton Observation Ship class.

The principal requirement of the Northampton's mission was observation of enemy forces.   To further this mission requirement, the ship carries a pair of dedicated bays that provide for the main mission requirement.   Though both bays are prohibitively expensive, the performance gained by using them more than outweighs the cost.   A dedicated Communications bay and a dedicated Detection bay provide the Northampton with the capability to spot an enemy before the ship can be spotted itself.

The addition of Clan engineers from Clan Nova Cat along with the best engineers from ComStar has allowed the SLDF to develop some of the best communication systems in either the Inner Sphere or the Kerensky Cluster.   The Communications Gear Bay includes a set of omnidirectional antenna arrays coupled with several advanced computers to interpret the information that the antennas receive.   A set of lateral line sensor arrays along the length of the ship are hooked into the specialty computers and provide a good deal of information sensing capability.   It is not uncommon for a Northampton to jump into a system masquerading as a merchant vessel to "soak" up local broadcasts.   In addition to the passive systems in the Communications Bay's passive sensor systems, the bay also has some of the most advanced narrowband and wideband jamming systems.   ComStar's engineers were able to provide a bit of LosTech in the form of the advanced virus technology present on the Bugeye Surveillance that allowed it to tap into an enemy vessel's own communications system.

The Detection Gear bay expands on the integral sensor system already present on a modern warship.   The massive bay includes both passive and active sensors for gathering intelligence.   Much of the Detection Gear is used in conjunction with the Communications Gear.   The lateral line sensor arrays also benefit the Detection Gear by providing the vessel with nearly a 360° coverage area.   Also included are a number of optics, which are based off of the famed Tokina Optics once found on many of the original Star League's surveillance vessels.   A pulse doppler array is also provided giving the Northampton the ability to find an enemy vessel quickly without resorting to giving away it's own presence.   With the addition of a data network, the onboard fighters and dropships can be used as the eyes and ears of the ship, all without giving away it's presence as a warship.

A small number of dedicated technicians provided with some very luxurious quarters work both bays.   Because of the sensiitive nature of the Northampton's missions the technicians are segregated from the crew.   The crew size is also the bare minimum needed to crew the vessel, also because of the secrecy involved.   While it does reduce the odds of a crewman saying something during a shore leave, the maintenance requirements of the Northampton leaves many of the vessels in drydocks for a good portion of their time not on a mission.

The crew amenities are limited because most of the space onboard the ship is taken up by both the Communications Gear and the Detection Gear and by the massive engines.   Three thousand tons of diatomic hydrogen powers the vessel to a maximum of 4.5 Gs, allowing the Northampton to out-run any vessel that it cannot defeat with it's armament.   The main naval armament is a pair of Medium Naval PPCs along with a pair of Killer Whale Missile Launchers.   Secondary missile support is provided by a trio of Barracuda Missile Launchers.   A group of Gauss Rifles and ER Large Lasers provide the vessel with adequate anti-fighter weaponry.   The addition of a platoon of Battle Armored Infantry provides additional security in the unlikely event that the vessel is boarded.   The anti-fighter defenses are supplemented by two squadrons of fighters along with a pair of dropship docking collars.   Usually fighter defense ships like the new Pentagon II are normally carried by Northamptons, though much like the SLDF's Congress 'Mech carriers can be used for important missions.

The armament of the Northampton is secondary given it's primary mission of information gathering, but it is more than enough to take down a nosy fighter or dropship.   The crushing acceleration of the main engines along with several unique defensive systems aids in the defense of the vessel.   The hull is heavily armored with a Lamellor Ferro-Carbide shell that's applied over a shock absorber system and shaped with sharp edges to deflect incoming projectiles.   The armor arrangement along with the ECM and ECCM abilities of the Detection Gear provides the Northampton Observation Ships with a hefty defensive capability.

Currently only the SLDF's Intelligence Sub-Command has access to the Northampton Observation Ship.   The mercenary Dropship Irregulars forms one of the larger Fury teams used by the Intelligence Command and has been provided with the first production Northampton in support of their continued operations.

I have some problems with the concept ... I mean, 400.000 Ton ... it is too big to perform a vigilance run and remain undetectable.
Other problems are the lack of Point Defense weaponry, a low Support Point, the lack of Small Craft bays (better suited for vigilance and/or courrier runs than fighters) and the mission window (180 days) although it has sufficient Cargo Space to improve it when necessary.
The fluff is very good ...

It reminds me a bit of the concept of the Bug Eye and of the modern Awacs and similar aircrafts.
I do not understand much about ships but this one seems well designed and the fluff is also nicely written (with lots of technical data that makes it more realistic).
Good job.
By the way, which ship is it on the picture? As far as I know, it is not a CBT one (but it looks nice).
