Overview:

Based off of the highly successful Marauder, the Cestus was designed as a lower end heavy fire support 'Mech for the SLDF. The Cestus served with distinction with the SLDF and would have become on of the standard combat designs had it not been for the Amaris Coup and the resulting conflict that followed. In the aftermath of the Amaris Coup, over 90% of the SLDF left for parts unknown taking with them most of the might of the SLDF including the Cestus. For a time the only examples of the Cestus were maintained in our Blessed Order's BattleMech caches on Terra. With the unveiling of the Gray Death memory core and the general dissemination of Star League technology, the rest of the IS began to field 'Mechs that once served the SLDF.

The Cestus is a popular 'Mech used by the two sundered halves of the former Federated Commonwealth. Its heavy armor protection along with an excellent weapons array that encompasses all combat ranges made it a favorite of many MechWarriors. Two different models of the Cestus was built by both GM and Blue Shot, both manufacturers of the Cestus. The only difference between the two models was the choice of primary weaponry; one version carried a massive Gauss Rifle and the other carried paired PPCs.

A new model of the Cestus that has recently been seen was observed in the company of several Davion affiliated commands. This new model makes use of several advances in technology pioneered by the NAIS, including their new autocannon munitions and their advanced targeting computer system. A blend of both "old" and new technologies, the Cestus is sure to remain a part of the reborn AFFS.

Capabilities:

The original chassis of the Cestus was retained helping to keep some of the original stylings of the original production model. The advanced 260 XL fusion plant was retained giving the Cestus a speed comparable to other contemporary heavy designs. The only true change to the design of the 'Mech was with its heat exchange system that was reduced to only the DHS mounted with the engine. The extra tonnage gained was placed into a different weapons styling and a better equipment loadout. The one shining feature of the Cestus has always been its heavy armor protection and that was retained with this modification. The old standard armor was replaced with ferro fibrous armor. Providing the same excellent protection as the old armor, the weight savings allowed for additional weaponry and equipment, also the bulkier armor has given the Cestus a more angular design when compared to the original model since it is harder to shape FF armor into curves. A new feature that was also added to the new production models was the introduction of CASE to protect the 'Mech's pilot from ammunition explosions even though it does nothing to prevent the destruction of the 'Mech.

Taking a page from both of the original models of the Cestus, the new Davion model takes the best from both configurations. Many pilots when they first use one of the Cestus are surprised to see that the old Gauss Rifle has been removed in favor of a positively ancient GM Whirlwind Autocannon. It is only when they discover that the massive three ton ammunition bay is filled with the newest NAIS autocannon munitions, do they discover why this change was made. Coupled with the advanced NAIS targeting computer, the old autocannon is deadly when it is used in conjunction with the Precision and Armor-piercing ammos.

The back-up weaponry carried by the Cestus is rather reminiscent of that carried by the Marauder. Each arm carries a Magna Hellstar PPC along with a single Magna Mk II Medium Laser. These weapons came from a surplus supply and were a bagain for the new Cestus design. Their "bargain basement" value is easily discounted when they are tied into the targeting computer. The standard PPCs were chosen because of their similar range to the standard AC/5. Another interesting design feature of the Cestus is that it makes use of hand actuators, which gives it a tactical advantage in a close quarters fight and allows it to be able to pick up arms and equipment during raids.

Overall the weapons mix carried by the Cestus is very similar to that of the ancient original Marauder chassis that the Cestus was based-off of. The addition of the advanced targeting computer from the NAIS along with the new autocannon munitions have breathed new life into the 'Mech as well as making it a symbol of the might of the AFFS.

Configuration / Variants:

Rumors abound that House Steiner has also developed their own modification to the basic design of the Cestus, but at this time ROM has not been able to infiltrate their production lines. Some of the initial reports have stated that the Steiner model is to be powered by their new Light engine, though its is only a speculation after overhearing an officer talk about his new ride. The weapons configuration of the Steiner Cestus is not known, though ROM is working hard to penetrate the securtiy surrounding it.

Battle History:

First debuted during the fighting on Tikonov, the Cestus was a surprise to many of the Lyran troops that first faced it in combat. The improved accuracy of the 'Mech's dual PPCs and the almost amazing accuracy of the old autocannon scared the first pilots that faced off against it. Even though the fighting on Tikonov stalled, it wasn't because of the contribution of the upgraded Cestus.

Later during the monumental Battle of New Avalon, the Davion Heavy Guards made extensive use of the new Cestus to wear down the rogue ComStar unit on world. The only low point of the use of the new Cestus came during the capture of the NAIS by the 1st NAIS cadet cadre. Several of the cadets piloted the new Cestus and were completely destroyed by the cowardly artillery barrage that leveld their campus.

Deployment:

Deployed primarily with pro-Davion units during the recent Fed Com Civil War, the Cestus has been seen primarily with the Davion Brigade of Guards, which is currently rebuilding. Several other pro-Davion units have been seen operating with this 'Mech. It is highly unlikely that any other Successor State will be able to operate them thanks to the advanced equipment only used by House Davion.

Really good Davion Cestus.
It reminds me of the Marauder but the inclusion of a targeting computer and of special ammo makes it shine as truly Davion. I am not sure but I think it is superior to the 7S version.
Good job.

A new model of the Cestus that has recently been seen operating with several Steiner-affiliated units makes use of several new Lyran technologies. Seen first as a test bed for the new Lyran Light engine, the Cestus being produced by Lyran manufacturers takes a different design route than the Davion sponsored design.

Capabilities:

The original chassis of the Cestus was modified with endo steel to make it lighter and yet it still retains some of the original stylings of the original production model. The new touch of the Lyran Cestus is a piece of technology stolen from Wolf's Dragoons, the Light engine. While not as weight-efficient as the comparable XL engine, the Light engine takes up less internal space and is less vulnerable to the effects of a torso ammunition explosion. The Steiner model of the Cestus makes use of additional DHS to help to dissipate most of the waste heat produced by its new weapons complement. The original armor was retained, though it now has CASE to protect against ammunition explosions. The CASE equipment coupled with the new Light engine allows the Cestus to continue to function even after an ammo explosion that would have destroyed the orignal model or even the model used by House Davion.

The weapons configuration of the Steiner Cestus modification is based around a battle proven Mydron Excel LB-10X autocannon. The LB-X cannon is supplied with three tons of ammunition usually divided into two tons of cluster munitions and single ton of slugs for maximum damage effect. The ammunition is stored in a CASE-protected bay. Taking advantage of the holes made by the cluster ammunition is a quartet of ER lasers. Each of the original model's arm mounted energy weaponry has been replaced with their equivalent ER model. The higher heat output of this changeout is tempered by the additional DHS mounted by the 'Mech and their longer reach on the battlefield.

Unusually the Lyran Cestus makes use of an interesting piece of technology: a TAG spotting laser. The head mounted electronic system allows the Cestus to call in both directed Arrow IV strikes or directed artillery strikes. The sharing of FWL technology with House Steiner, mainly in the form of missile munitions like the Semi-guided LRMs, makes for an excellent selling point for the use of the TAG spotting laser. The new Copperhead artillery rounds also being used by the Lyran military also turns the Cestus into a unique spotting unit.

Configuration / Variants:

Other than the Davion modified Cestus, no other variants of the Cestus is known to our Blessed Order at this time, though is not known what our former compatriots may be doing. The chaos of the Fed Com Civil War has made it all to easy to spy on both sides and many members of ROM and the First Circuit are afraid of a Blakist model given the distracted nature of both sides of the former Federated Commonwealth.

Battle History:

The Cestus was first seen in action against Davion sponsored units in the Lyran Alliance. Elements of the Arcturan Guards under Linda McDonald hounded Prince Victor's forces on Alarion and on Tikonov made heavy use of the both the mainline Cestus model and the new Lyran model. The increased targeting range of its weaponry along with the continued autocannon barrages made them fearsome opponents.

The 1st Royal Guards made extensive use of modified Cestus during their defense against Archon Peter Steiner-Davion during his assault. Even with their remodeled weaponry they were no match for Clan equipment when Khan Phelan Kell's Wolves entered the fray. Even against all odds the 1st Royal's Cestuses were the last 'Mechs to fall and only after doing extreme damage against several enemy foes.

Deployment:

First deployed with several of the higher profile Lyran Guard regiments, the Cestus has also been seen with the 1st Royal Guards RCT stationed on Tharkad.

A good Steiner design with Light Engine and all.
The only bad thing about it is the use of a LB 10-X AC. For me, this is not really a Steiner weapon. If it had been a LB 20-X, a LGR or a HGR that would have been different but the challenge prevented you from using the two latest.

Two different models of the Cestus was built by both GM and Blue Shot, both manufacturers of the Cestus. The only difference between the two models was the choice of primary weaponry; one version carried a massive Gauss Rifle and the other carried paired PPCs.

It is as was feared by many of the First Circuit, a model of the Cestus has been seen that makes use of technology only available to our Blessed Order and to the Blakists. ROM is investigating the appearance of this new model of the Cestus, but it is highly likely that ROM is once again compromised by Blakist forces.

Transmission breakdown..........
Unity comes by the force of arms..........
.......Trasmission reacquired

As can be seen here, this transmission may be interrupted at times by Blakist sources, indeed most of this may have been altered by their agents.

Capabilities:

The model of the Cestus that has been spotted within the Word-of-Blake Militia retains some of the features of the original model that served the SLDF. The original chassis has been modified to accept weaponry of a newer manufacture. The original 260 XL engine was retained, though the number of DHS has been increased to deal with the heat build-up from its new weapons array. As with the Davion model, the Blakist Cestus makes use of FF armor to save weight for some additional weaponry.

Through contacts gained within the FWL, the Word-of-Blake has access to much of the newest weaponry being produced within that realm. A brand new Ultra AC-10 replaces the old Gauss Rifle. Much like the Lyran model, the Blakist model has three tons of ammunition which gives the 'Mech a very capable burst-fire weapon, though it is not protected by CASE as on the Davion and Lyran models. Much as with the Lyran Cestus, the Blakist model replaces all of the original laser weaponry with the newer ER versions, though the heat output can cripple the 'Mech if they are used extensively. The other new bit of equipment seen on the Blakist Cestus is the new C3i computer. Quickly becoming the premier piece of equipment in the Word-of-Blake Militia, the C3i computer is an impressive piece of hardware that is vastly superior to the C3 system being used by the rest of the Great Houses.

Configuration / Variants:

Along with the models being produced by Houses Davion and Steiner, the Word-of-Blake Cestus represents some of the best technology available for each of the separate factions. The only other Cestus models known to be in production are those that went to war with the original SLDF.

Battle History:

Several of the new Blakist Cestus have been seen in use in the Chaos March as the Word-of-Blake continues to create a buffer zone around Terra.

Transmission interrupted........
Blake is coming, look busy
.......Transmission reacquired

....units of Wolf's Dragoons has clashed several times with the Blakist 1st Division and the new model of their Cestus was instrumental in their defeat. Of course the lack of aerospace fighters did hurt the Dragoon force.

Deployment:

First seen with the Word-of-Blake's premier unit the 1st Division, it has been spotted with at least four other Divisions and it is unknown how many others are in operation with the "Secret" Divisions.

I always knew that those Wobies were crazy. Using a 'Mech prompt to overheating and with enough ammo to fly to the moon if needed with no CASE system is more than I would accept.
However the space is well used to increase the efficiency of the Cestus in a Blackie fashion

Overview:

[Author’s note: Original image is the work of Rad at Lords of the Battlefield. My drawing skills are no where near his ability. Enjoy his work and understand the inspiration that it was to me for this design.]

From the Journal of saKhan Samantha Kline
July 21, 3067

It is finally done. I have committed what could be the end of the Kindraa system that we have held onto for so long. I do realize that the alliance with Kindraa Mick-Kreese is the only way to stave off Annihilation or Absorption by another Kindraa, Sainze does come to mind in this case. I can only hope that this initiative has some way of balancing out the Crusader tendencies that my Clan has consigned itself. I am beginning to see how the former Khan, Amanda Carrol felt as she saw all that she had created come apart so quickly, in so little time. I fear that even with the Warden “victory” during the Great Refusal, the Crusaders will do all that they can to sway any Trials to their own agenda. I am honor bound to follow the will of Kindraa Leader Andrew Kreese, but I do have some reservations. The current project that has started on the Dauntless OmniMech is well worth the expense to our Clan, but I still do fear that the Blood Spirits will also want some for their Touman. Every time that I have to deal with their ilChi, I feel that this is the wrong way of preserving the traditions that were part of the original Kline Kindraa, but I do not want the alternative. I have begun to ramble; I fear that it is something to do with my age.

Violently we strike at those who would cage us,
Mark our victories as cheap, our holdings as their own
Honor, Skill, Foresight, Strength – but never Unity.
What remains of our Spirit?

– The Remembrance (Clan Fire Mandrill), Passage 99, Verse 2, Lines 185-188

With these words, the need for an advanced OmniMech to fill out the ranks of the newest ilKindraa quickly became a major point of contention within Kindraa Mick-Kreese-Kline. The defacto Absorption of Kindraa Kline by Kindraa Mick-Kreese in early 3067 created a need for newer equipment to fill out the depleted ranks of the former Kindraa Kline Clusters. Rather than building a completely new OmniMech from scratch, a Kline designed secondline ‘Mech would be modified into an OmniMech and placed into production as a salve to the wounded pride of many former Kindraa Kline ‘MechWarriors. The name of the new OmniMech would come straight from The Remembrance; for those who strike at those who would cage us, the Dauntless is aptly named.

Capabilities:

The original incarnation of the Dauntless was of a slow ‘Mech at the top end of the Heavy weight class. Given the defensive nature of many units in Kindraa Kline, this was not as much of a problem that many would perceive it to be. An advanced Endo-Steel III internal skeleton gives the ‘Mech a large amount of mass for additional weaponry and equipment, though it does burden the ‘Mech with a smaller amount internal space for that extra equipment and weaponry. With the advancement to a frontline ‘Mech, the final design includes a common Consolidated XL Fusion 300-rated power plant. The addition of two more heat exchangers allows for the easy removal and upgrade of the power plant and the heat exchange system at the same time, though the increased repair costs are negated by the superior Clan technicians. A load of standard Forging FM-7 armor provides heavy protection, though it is far from the maximum possible for the chassis. The weight savings from both the XL engine and the endo steel material gives the Dauntless the capability to carry over half it’s mass in weaponry and equipment, far more than even the Jade Falcon’s similar Night Gyr.

40 tons of pod space available

Configuration / Variants:

Due to the nature of the original chassis of the Dauntless, the introduction of pod space and the modular nature has resulted in an odd amalgamation of parts and most configurations tend to mix both long and short ranged weaponry, though this is not the case for some of the variants. It is unique to note that several configurations do mount torso fired autocannons near the cockpit, but unlike the Predator which debuted about six years earlier, the cockpit has been gyro-stabilized to dampen out the vibrations caused when heavy autocannons are mounted in the shoulder pod mountings.

Several of the configurations show what the Clans have learned from the Initial Invasion of the Inner Sphere. While many within the Home Clans would decry such “Spheroid” tactics, the appearance of the entirety of the Steel Viper Clan from their Hegira from their Inner Sphere Occupation Zone has prompted many within the Fire Mandrill leadership to sit-up and take notice of the changing tactical situation in the Kerensky Cluster. The appearance of several configurations that carry sufficient ammunition stores also reflects the problems that the newly formed Kindraa Mick-Kreese-Kline is experiencing as they continue to replenish their depleted Frontline forces and the number of Trials that have occurred with the transference of the Burrock-Mandrill feud to the Star Adders.

The Primary Configuration is build around a long ranged stratagem with a set of paired weaponry. Each shoulder pod mount features one of the new “Captain” Series EMRG Gauss Rifles. Each Gauss Rifle is supplied with three tons of ammunition, which gives the ‘Mech the ability to snipe with impunity at almost any target. The ammunition is stored in a quartet of ammunition bays including each side torso and both the center torso and a mounting next to the cockpit. With the non-explosive nature of Gauss ammo, it is possible to mount it next to a pilot with little worries of pilot death from a lucky shot. Back-up weaponry is provided by a pair of Series IV Extended Range Large Lasers mounted in each arm. The addition of two more Double Heat Sinks in pods along with the arm mounted lasers allows this model to fully dissipate all of the heat produced from both movement and combat.

Alternate Configuration A is built around another set of paired weaponry, though this time the main punch is provided by a pair of Type XII Advanced Tactical Missile Racks. The flexible nature of the missile packs along with the specialty ammo types makes this a feared configuration. In order to make the most of the paired missile racks, this configuration carries a total of 40 volleys for both missile racks. This large store allows for an adequate mix for any mission type. Arm mounted Kolibri Delta Series Large Pulse Lasers gives this configuration of the Dauntless heavy firepower at any range increment. Additional heat sinks provide this configuration with additional volley fire capabilities. This change is odd given the pre-Invasion configurations of many OmniMechs with little regard to their heat dissipation systems.

Alternate Configuration B is built around the first “lesson” that the Clans have learned from Operation Revival, their lack of logistical might has been proven again and again to many Clans. Each arm mounts a paired set of Series IV ER Large Lasers and “Kingston” Series 2 ER PPCs. The addition of a targeting computer gives this configuration with unmatched accuracy on the battlefield. The addition of both a Broadband ECM suite and a TAG spotting laser allow this configuration to support its Star mates with electronic warfare capability and a potent spotting ability. Additional pod-mounted heat sinks allow for an almost unlimited volley fire capability.

Similar in scope to the Primary Configuration, Alternate Configuration C makes use of a pair of Type 32 Heavy Ultra Autocannons. Each Ultra-20 is provided with four tons of ammo split between the side torsos and the adjacent arms. The addition of a quartet of double heat sinks and a quartet of Series III ER Medium Lasers gives this model some staying power at close range. Primarily intended for use in Trials, this model is devastating at close-to-medium range, though it does suffer from a high heat curve.

Two pilots of the new Dauntless have created their own configurations; both are Bloodnamed Warriors from Kindraa Mick-Kreese-Kline. The first specialized Configuration is piloted by Star Commander Simon Jannik of a minor Bloodname used almost exclusively by Clan Fire Mandrill. His model is a deadly close-range combatant using a horde of pulse lasers combined with a targeting computer. A total of eight Kolibri Beta Series Medium Pulse Lasers are mounted alongside a “Captain” EMRG Gauss Rifle. The Gauss Rifle gives Jannik a minimal long range weapon system, though it does mount three tons of ammunition.

The other specialized configuration is piloted by saKhan Samantha Kline herself. Much like Star Commander Jannik’s model, saKhan Kline’s configuration is a close-in powerhouse. Mounting Six Delta Pattern-6 Streak SRM Racks and a trio of Kolibri Beta Series Medium Pulse Lasers, this model has the capability to ruin anyone’s day. A pair of arm-mounted Series IV ER Large Lasers provide a modicum of long range firepower, but the combined firepower of the pulses and Streak SRMs makes this configuration far deadlier at close ranged.

Battle History:

Produced too late to be of any help when Kindraa Kline decided to interfere with the retribution raid conducted by Kindraa Mick-Kreese in conjunction with the Blood Spirits, the small number Dauntless OmniMechs have primarily been seen shoring up the understrength former Kline Clusters. Several internal Trials of Refusal and Grievance over the ascension of Kindraa Sainze to the Khan’s position has come from a series of pro-Crusader motions introduced into the Clan Council. Much of this deep-seated scorn is leftover from the Great Refusal when a mixed Kindraa force was defeated by the Capellan Red Hussars. The continued divisions between Warden and Crusader have forced many Warriors towards a warlike footing, though the presence of the Blood Spirit ilChi has defused many of these situations.

The presence of the 27th Vanguard Assault Cluster on York has brought the Dauntless into combat with the Star Adders. Against the secondline ‘Mechs used by the Star Adders, the Dauntless has fared very well, though most of the victories have been tempered by the fact that it is any OmniMech facing off against a secondline ‘Mech (regardless of how sought after these ‘Mechs have begun to be in many circles).

Deployment:

Out of the three remaining Clusters that were once part of Kindraa Kline, two make use of the Dauntless to fill out their ranks. Both the aforementioned 27th Vanguard Assault Cluster and the 42nd Vanguard Battle Cluster make use of several of these new OmniMechs to fill in their unit. In the case of the 27th, loses against the Star Adders have allowed several of these new ‘Mechs to make their way to another Clan. Though the 42nd is nominally a Garrison unit, the few Dauntless’s that have made their way to this Cluster have been primarily seen piloted by stalwart Wardens who are determined to see the ascension of their Kindraa once again.

Due to the presence of the Fire Mandrill ilChi, the Blood Spirits were able to persuade the leaders of Kindraa Mick-Kreese-Kline in posting the 27th Vanguard Assault Cluster along with a full month’s production of the new Dauntless when the unit arrived on York.

There is not a lot that I can add to improve what has gone before me. In addition to an excellant mech, due to the low numbers of weapons, the heat problem is not a problem at all. If I were to see any of the variants in action, I would want to either be a spectator or on its side. I definitely would not want to be on the receiving end of this one. Great work.

Another nicely written fluff (I should really buy the FM Upgrades as soon as possible).
The configurations are well thought and have a similar feeling thanks to their low number of different weapons.
I think this is a 'Mech that the Scorpions would want to use also (as it suits their approach to warfare perfectly).
Really good job (you are only missing your own picture to get a perfect note on my side (but I had to find something, no? ))

Yikes. What else can I say?

2/17/2006 5  Lonely Coyote
Prine through C are good, but the last two are just not playing nice!
Great job all around. It's a solid 'Mech in any configuration.

Appalling, simply just appalling. But I like it tremendously XD...Nice evil configs all round. Simply amazing !

Great fluff and a great mech. saKhan Kline's varient is my favorite, that one is a beast. I like the paired weapons idea, two is always better lol. I look forward to seeing this fight.

Overview:

Our Blessed Order has maintained its archives dating from before the start of the historic Star League, to its Fall, and to its resurrection. Events have come and gone that might have toppled the first incarnation, if not for the benevolent rulership of the Cameron family. Our archives have seemed to take on a life of their own and the dedicated work of the Acolytes and Adepts here at the Tukayyid branch of Technical Mech Intelligence has been instrumental in the discovery of many older BattleMechs from the Star League and many newer ones developed by the Clans. An Adept was able to find a listing for a unique design that if it wasn’t for the horrors of the Amaris Coup, would have supplanted the Warhammer in the minds of many SLDF MechWarriors. The route to production of this BattleMech has its roots in Star League Council Edict of 2650 that placed a ceiling on the size of House armies; it was for this reason that House Kurita was forced to dismantle many units, including several regiments of BattleMechs. This would become the First Hidden War as Kurita MechWarriors dueled with SLDF MechWarriors.

The First Hidden War highlighted a flaw with the training of MechWarriors in the SLDF and many of the Ronin of the Draconis Combine were able to exploit this in their early victories. In response to the losses mounting from the duels, the SLDF High Command started the Advanced Combat and Maneuvering Skills (ACMS) Project in an attempt to teach SLDF MechWarriors how to control their BattleMechs more effectively and this soon turned the tide for those few pilots fortunate to wear the crossed six-shooters on their uniforms. The combat prowess of the Gunslingers, as the program came to be known, was the stuff of legends and many of the more legendary Gunslingers became very well known throughout the Star League as the duels were broadcast to the entirety of mankind.

One notable Gunslinger was Colonel Daniel Allison, he was the commander and Champion of the Twenty-ninth Royal Dragoon Regiment from 2701 until 2743. He was a phenomenal marksman and ended many duels in the first seconds with shots delivered from his BattleMaster that disabled his opponents before they could take a step. After 42 years of dueling, Colonel Allison retired and accepted a posting to Kallon Industries as a BattleMech designer. Given his record of 59-0-1 from his time as a Gunslinger in the SLDF, Kallon was overjoyed to have such a well known pilot working for them.

Daniel Allison’s first project was to develop a BattleMech that could take away the monopoly that StarCorp’s own Warhammer had managed to acquire in its service life. Given the monumental task ahead of him, it is almost a shame that the plans were for naught as the Amaris Civil War plunged the Star League into a brutal war that left little. From what Our researchers have been able to piece together, we present this design for the education of those of the New Star League in the hope that it will continue to inspire those who protect humanity from threats; both internal and external.

Capabilities:

Kallon Industries had long been known as the producer of the successful Crusader and Daniel Allison wanted to follow up on this example as the basis for his new design. Knowing that the executives at Kallon wanted to supplant the Warhammer, the ideal mass of the new ‘Mech would need to be in the heavy classification. Even though Daniel Allison had been a member of Royal Regiment, he knew that the majority of the Regular Army did not have the advanced technology available to those units from Hegemony. Making the decision to build the ‘Mech from commonly available parts would also make it easier to repair in the field, something that he knew of first hand from his years of command experience. Intending not just to replace the Warhammer, but to excel in a similar role, Daniel Allison’s design team worked for much 2744 and 2745 developing this concept more fully. The result of their work would come to be known as the ML-1 Maul, a subtle knock against the Warhammer in both name and abilities.

Daniel Allison’s ability to target an enemy where his shots would do the most damage was honed from years as a MechWarrior and he knew that giving a pilot to do massive damage at range with accuracy would be key to the longevity of the ‘Mech design. Donal PPCs would be the main punch of the Maul’s armament; mounted in reversible-facing arms, they would be able to pivot to cover the rear of the ‘Mech in combat. To make certain that the MechWarrior actually would be able to hit the enemy was a tough process for the Targeting System team to solve, but they decided to make due with a proven system in the form of the KBC Starsight Model T&T normally found on the Lancelot. The Krupp Corporation was well known for their superior equipment and the KBC Starsight was one of their best with a multi-mode system that could pinpoint the exact enemy currently targeting the ‘Mech and could calculate the best response to deal with it. While not as well known as either the Tek Tru-Trak or the DLK Type Phased Array Sensor System, the KBC Starsight was incredibly reliable and could operate with damage to its processors. Even though the communications suite would be neglected during a duel, the Kallon engineers pushed to make the ‘Mech as battle ready as possible and so mounted KruppCOMM-500. The paired communications system and targeting and tracking system were a matched pair on the Lancelot and the deal offered by the Krupp Corporation further sweetened the deal.

Backing up the arm mounted PPCs, a quartet of Krupp Model 2 medium lasers provide close-in firepower. Mounted in pairs, the medium lasers remind many MechWarriors of the orientation as seen on the Warhammer. Daniel Allison was interviewed about the arrangement and whether this was a copy of the Warhammer, but was heard to remark that “it was a good design choice reflected in other designs, most notable the BattleMaster as well.” More than one pilot has also noted that the Maul has an almost “flat” damage curve with the ‘Mech doing the same amount of damage output regardless of the range. Careful bracket firing is necessary to keep the ‘Mech from overheating too quickly, even though the Maul is capable of firing both PPCs and moving at the same time without generating excess heat, a feat that even the Warhammer has problems with on a normal basis.

As with the Lancelot, the armor plating was shaped to give the ‘Mech a small silhouette when facing directly against an opponent. The heavy protection of the Kallon Royalstar Heavy give many of the Maul’s pilots a sense of invincibility since their ‘Mech can survive a good deal of punishment. A small number of critics have brought up a point about the leg and foot structure being too small and therefore the ‘Mech would be unstable in combat, much as what happened to GM’s Blackjack. Combat reports of the Maul’s performance against the Usurper’s forces do not report this problem, nor do they say why. It is in the opinion of the Adept assigned to the project that the Kallon engineers came up with a software program to calibrate the ‘Mech’s gyro properly for the most efficient step. More than one opponent has fired on the legs of a Maul thinking of them as a weak point, but would be surprised as the legs were able to survive a good deal of punishment.

In their move to produce the Maul Kallon made certain to get the ‘Mech into the right hands and with the backing of Daniel Allison, his old unit accepted a company of Mauls into their ranks. The low maintenance requirements of the Donal PPCs and the reliability of the communications and targeting system equipment made the Maul less maintenance intensive than many other ‘Mechs present in the SLDF. The addition of a heavy armor plate and the all energy armament has made the ‘Mech even more popular among its pilots as it can continue to fight for as long as the MechWarrior is willing to do so.

Configuration / Variants:

A proposed variant made by Kallon would make use of advanced Hegemony technology as used by many Royal units; however a number of legal issues including trade regulations killed this version on the drawing board.
[Editor’s note: Unfortunately the Adept in charge of this project was unable to find the exact stats, but was to extrapolate a number of possible design considerations. Given the all energy loadout, double heat sinks would most certainly be mounted to make the ‘Mech safer in a fire fight and to allow for the higher heat producing Extended Range weaponry. Very likely a pair of ER PPCs would be mounted to take advantage of their range and lack of minimum range that the Donal PPCs have. The most speculation would come as to the secondary weaponry, especially since the space available would be taken up by the heat sinks. It is here that this fails analysis.]

It should be noted that Our Blessed Order has concluded that if this BattleMech had gone into full production, its reliance on energy weaponry and “standard” components would have made it easily a match for any Warhammers in service with the Successor States. However, the Amaris Coup and the Exodus would prove to be a death knell for the design and the further ravages of the First and Second Succession Wars also would have had a hand in keeping the Maul from widespread distribution.

Battle History:

One of the greatest strengths of the SLDF was the diversity of those who joined. Soldiers of all nations were able to set aside their differences for the betterment of mankind. Even the First Hidden War couldn’t change this as the SLDF began to send envoys to Combine bases, not to challenge their champions but to offer them commissions. One Combine MechWarrior who accepted a commission was a young Sergeant Raymond Takashi. Raymond was accepted into the SLDF and because of his skill at the controls of any BattleMech given to him, was accepted into the Gunslinger program on Mars in 2741. Here was able to be fully accepted by peers because he was just as talented as they were, though this caused some friction at first. The friction slowly died away as the chief instructor termed his trainees lions and created a ceremonial position known as “Master of Lions” for the best pilot. Given the competition available in the Gunslinger, Raymond was excited when he graduated as a two time winner of the coveted “Master of Lions” title in 2742. He became a duelist in 64th Dragoon Regiment stationed in his homeland in the Draconis Military District.

His unit would not be deployed to the Periphery uprising, but would be used in the drive toward Terra against the Usurper Amaris once his treachery became known. The 64th executed a number of feints before the SLDF could be assembled en masse against the besieged Hegemony; Raymond’s Battalion was deployed on one of these attacks to gauge the strength of the Amaris Republican Guard units stationed on Nirasaki. The initial drop went well as an independent Fleet Aero Wing provided cover for the Second Battalion’s drop. Unfortunately for them, the Republican force was dug-in and even with the strength of the SLDF Heavy and Assault BattleMechs, the force was unable to dislodge the Republican force. Raymond barely survived with his life as the Republican force sallied forth from their fortifications as his regiment fell back to their dropship. Raymond’s Awesome was downed at the door of the Dictator and he managed to make it onboard just as the ship was lifting off. Out of his battalion of 24 ‘Mechs and 12 vehicles; only 10 ‘Mechs and 6 vehicles survived the Nirasaki raid.

Sidelined for refitting, the remainder of his regiment went on to join Taskforce Sun and was subsequently destroyed to a man before the SLDF could even get close to Terra. Raymond’s depleted battalion was then forwarded to the 108th Dragoon Regiment to make up its own losses from earlier in the campaign. It would be here as Raymond joined the 108th that he would be assigned to a Maul. He quickly came to love his new ride and even took to the tradition of naming his ‘Mech. Raymond would go into battle again against the Usurper’s forces in his shishi-o, which was the name of the sword of the legendary hero Yorimasa. In his “Master of Lions,” Raymond survived to join the Exodus of the SLDF from the Inner Sphere.

Deployment:

The Maul was but one of the many casualties of the War against the Usurper Amaris and would be forgotten by all in the Inner Sphere aside from Our Blessed Order. For those soldiers of the SLDF who piloted a Maul in the fight against the Republican Guards and assorted Amaris Militia forces, had nothing but glowing reviews for the ‘Mech. Numerous Dragoon and Heavy Assault units made use of it alongside, ironically, the ‘Mech that it was destined to replace: the Warhammer.

Delving further into Our Archives, the Adept in charge of the Maul data file was able to find several units that made use of the ‘Mech during the campaign to retake Terra. Two of the notable regiments survived the campaign and left with the Exodus and the other two were destroyed in the Terran offensive. Both the 64th and 181st Dragoon Regiments were destroyed during the campaign to take Terra, whereas the 29th Royal Dragoon Regiment and the 108th Dragoon Regiment would survive to join the Exodus. The disposition of those MechWarriors who joined the Exodus is unknown and even with a SLDF garrison on the former Smoke Jaguar homeworld of Huntress; the information is not forthcoming from Clan sources.

Nice picture and nice fluff.
The 'Mech itself is great but as with the Greatsword in a competition against the Warhammer, I would all depend on the pilot as all these 'Mechs are rather similar and none has an overwhelming advantage.
Good job.

Wow...excellent! I like that pic, where's it from? Anyhow, a nice competitor for the Warhammer and my own Warhammer competition, the Greatsword! The fluff is excellent, and I like the fact that your adept failed to fully determine the variant's load-out. That's a nice touch. I'd love to see how the two would fare against each other. I suspect your extra MLs would win you the day. Bravo!

Overview:

Hegira.   This word brings to mind so many emotions; all too many of them conflicting and fracticious.   This was in the minds of many Steel Vipers when Khan Zalman accepted Hegira from the Jade Falcons following the disastorous attempt to wrest control of their shared Occupation Zone.   Reeling from this onslaught on their honor, the Vipers withdrew into Clan space and waited until the day when they can reclaim their honor.   The presense of a well trained and motivated military is shown many within the Home Clans the dangers of the Steel Viper Touman, but many are looking toward the end of the Truce of Tukayyid and the ongoing threat of what the Star Adders will do with their newly acquired strength.

As many within the Kerensky Cluster suspected, in the late 3060's the Steel Vipers decided to strike out with their restructured ground forces.   Supported by the new Mercer-class dropship and fully supported by both new BattleMech designs and Aerospace Fighters, the Steel Vipers sought to take control over the world of New Kent and to punish the Snow Ravens for the slights against their honor.   Leading the way for the newly constituted Viper Touman was the newly produced Granicus Heavy Fighter.

Capabilities:

Named after one of the great battles of Alexander the Great, the Granicus has much to live up to in terms of its namesake.   Much like the Heavy Cavalry favored by the Macedonian Leader, the Granicus Heavy Fighter is a deadly battlefield implement.   It is meant to take the fight to the enemy.   While the Consolidated Fusion engine is a piece of older technology, the power output is enough to push the heavy fighter is a maximum acceleration of 4 G's.

Much as the Xerxes Heavy Fighter, the Granicus also relies on the heavy firepower provided by the Ultra AC-20 autocannon.   A trio of cannons provides the Granicus with devestating firepower and is useful in its intended role as a drophip-buster.   Each cannon is provided with 5 tons of ammunition giving the craft incredible endurance even when all three cannons are used at the double rate of fire.   Backing up this immense firepower is a lone ER medium laser rear mounted providing a modicum of protection as the fighter tears through enemy formations.   The use of a broadband jammer system further degrades the capabilities of enemy fighters and gives the Granicus a bit more protection against advanced targeting systems.

The deadly armament of the Granicus is nothing without the heavy armor load that provides the craft with the ability to weather the heavy armament found on many dropships that they are normally used against.   The heat exchange system is also optimized to allow for repeated firing of all three Ultra cannons at the double rate and this alone accounts for the fearsome reputation of the fighter.   Several heavly armored fuel tanks gives the fighter a standard endurance capability, which is helped along by the prodigious amount of ammunition carried.   The need to withdraw to a carrier to refuel and rearm work together to prevent the losses of a fighter due to poor judgement by the pilot to fight on with only a light class weapon that can only be used while flying away from the enemy.

Battle History:

When the Steel Vipers launched their primary assaults against the Cloud Cobras on New Kent, many outside the Clan expected this series of battles.   What was unexpected was the intervention of the Clan Snow Raven seemingly at the request of the Cloud Cobras.   The Snow Raven reinforcements were intercepted over New Kent by a small force of Viper warships and leading the way was several Stars of the new Granicus Heavy Fighter.   Making full use of the surprise value of a new fighter design with its unheardof armor protection, the Viper force was able to destroy several Snow Raven dropships in orbit and were even able to cripple an Essex-class Destroyer.

Even with the strong showing of the Granicus on New Kent, when the Steel Vipers attempted to land forces on the Snow Raven world of Lum.   The heavy protection afforded by the double strength warship fleet around Lum would prove to be the undoing of the Viper assault force.   This was further compounded by the arrogance of the Viper commander.   It was upon his order that the Mercer-class dropships surged ahead of their fighter screen to claim a greater deal of the glory of being first to ground on planet.   The dropships when stripped of their fighter escort quickly were destroyed by the more superior Raven fighter force.   The one silver lining to the disasterous assault on Lum was the showing of the 281st Support Binary, which was made up entirely of the new Granicus Heavy Fighter.

The 281st was able to drive off a pair of Raven assault ships to allow for the escape of the Viper forces following the raid, though they were unable to prevent Khan Zalman's death at the hands on the Ravens.   A pair of Raven built Carrier-class dropships were destroyed by the 281st along with most of the fighters carried by the two dropships.   Only four out of the ten fighters survived to be picked up by the retreating Viper forces.

Variants:

Clan Snow Raven makes use of a modified Granicus after several were captured from Steel Viper forces.   The Raven modification removes all three Ultra cannons and replaces them with six ATM-9 racks.   Each ATM rack is provided with three tons of ammunition allowing for an equal mix of each ammunition type.   An ER medium laser is mounted alongside each paired ATM rack providing a bit more firepower, though this model have some difficulties with heat generation.

Notable Vessels & Crews:

Star Captain Samantha Dumont, commander of the 281st Support Binary was instrumental in forcing open the Snow Raven defensive cordon to allow the pitiful remains of the Lum raid to escape.   A member of an obscure Bloodname House shared by the Vipers with the Cloud Cobras, the Dumont line was once the exclusive property of the Absorbed Clan Mongoose.

Her incredible tactical skill at the controls of her Graniscus has earned her a commendation from the former saKhan Brett Andrews as well as ensuring that her genes would go on as the donor for the next sibko to be bred by the Vipers.

Deployment

Given the unique formations that the Steel Vipers use in their Touman, the number of Granicuses is smaller than would normally be seen in a "normal" Clan force.   Star-sized formations have been spotted in several warship fighter Stars and a few ground-based units also make use of the Granicus, though its reduced fuel supply precludes this use much of the time.

The Snow Ravens have been able to capture several versions of the Granicus and have come up with their own specialized model to support their aerospace heavy forces.

Oddly enough the Outworlds Alliance 1st Air Wing makes use of a pair of fighters that have been tentatively identified as the Granicus.   Where they have acquired this craft is unknown, but Our Blessed Order believes that they are an indication of the worth given to the Alliance by the Ravens.   This "alliance" bears watching and could be as troubling as the original alliance between the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth.

Rules: Level 2, Standard design

Mass: 200,000 tons

Inner Sphere / 3068: AFFC-24

Overview:

The once mighty Federated Commonwealth was torn asunder by the infighting among the Steiner-Davion siblings.   While this was received with trepidation and cheering, depending on the audience, it had far reaching consequences to residents of both realms.   Anything but a "civil" war, the Fed Com Civil War tore apart two nations and even brought the Clans and their ancient enemy into the war.   Throughout both wars, the fighting was not just confined to ground operations.   Our Blessed Order's own agents have commented about the level of destruction seemed to be on par with what happened during the 1st Succession War.   Jumpships, while normally held inviolate, were normally targeted by both sides in an attempt to stop or divert them.   Warship losses by both the Federated Suns and the Lyran Alliance were horrifying, especially to the fractured economies of both realms.

The cancellation of what would have been the Durandel class Destroyer by the Federated Commonwealth following the seccession of the Lyran Alliance effectively left the realm with only two classes of ships available for the Admiralty.   While the Fox had already proven itself during both Operation Bulldog and Task Force Serpent, the larger Avalon had not faced an actual opponent.   ROM was able to infiltrate the shipyard at Federated-Boeing's main facility at Galax and was able to intercept communications concerning a new warship class to supplement the existing fleet of warships.

When the Fox was first launched in 3052 by the Federated Commonwealth, many analysts had commented that the ship was better armed and armored than some Star League Destroyers.   While this was true, the vessel was also expensive costing over 16 million C-bills, the post Clan War economy of the Federated Commonwealth could not afford to build as many as the Admiralty wanted to fill out the AFFC Fleet.   Work began on a lower cost alternative that the Admiralty hoped would supplement the existing Foxes and the forthcoming Durandel Destroyers and Avalon Cruisers.   Tentatively named the RX-85 Corvette, the ship would later be named the Charlemagne.

Unfortunately, the ship would come too late to participate in the Fed Com Civil War, but the Blakist Coup would become the main battlefield of the Charlemagne class Corvette.

Capabilities:

Several advances in warship design had been highlighted by reverse engineering of Clan systems and continuing research at the hated NAIS, which would be incorpated into the design of the Charlemagne Corvettes.   With only the Galax yards large enough to produce them, but overloaded by producing other vessels, the plans for the new Corvette would be forwarded to New Syrtis to be produced at the shipyards there.   Oddly, ROM was unable to determine if the ship plans were forwarded to the Bolan yards, though looking back after the Civil War it was a fortuitous mistake.

Taking a smaller, modified internal structure than the Fox allowed the design team to make a number of "shortcuts" in their development of the Charlemagne.   The reduction in structural supports would mean that the ship would carry a lighter load of armor, but that lack would be mitigated by the massive Stanley Supers thrust system.   Advances in both metalurgy and design allowed the AFFC design team to put together a set of massive interplanetary drives that can propel the Charlemagne to a bone-crushing cruising acceleration of 3 G's with a maximum acceleration of 4.5 G's.   Because of this bruising speed capability, the ship was specially designed with custom acceleration couches for all crew members.   Each walkway also includes an area where an extra set of acceleration couches are available for any crew member caught unprepared for combat maneuvering.   To aid the ship's maneuverability an advanced array of thrusters were added making the ship as nimble as some heavy aerospace fighters.

Given the high acceleration capabilities of the Charlemagne, several AFFC Admiralty think tanks quickly developed a set of tactics that would take advantage of this acceleration ability.   Most of the tactics make full use of this speed ability and feature a number of high speed passes to sow confusion in the enemy's ranks, this tactic is best when several ships operate in a squadron formation.   To take advantage of this tactic, the designers were instructed to increase the armor on the forward part of the ship, even going so far as to lighten the plate around the aft portion of the ship.   Another tactic developed involved the use of missiles as a diversion as the ship passes through an enemy formation.   The side and rear-mounted Barracuda launchers were mounted in this fashion to take advantage of this tactic.   The remainder of the armament is based on paired Naval Lasers that cover the front portion of the ship.   Paired large pulse lasers provide minimal anti-fighter defenses along the ship's flanks.

Unlike the slightly larger Fox, the Charlemagne only carries a single squadron of fighters.   Instead of carrying heavy fighters, most ships carry medium or light fighters simply because no other fighter has the acceleration capability to keep up with a Charlemagne at maximum acceleration.   ROM has uncovered that there were several protests concerning the ship's prodigious acceleration and reduced amenities, enough of them were logged that the AFFC Admiralty decided to revive an old crew rotation system involving a Blue and Gold crew for each ship.   The reduced provisions and the lack of cargo space both were attributed to this step.   A small 80-meter grav deck does provide the crew with some entertainment facilites, the ship even has a small zero-G pool, but even these do not mitigate the small crew quarters and cramped acceleration harnesses and couches.

One main advantage that the Charlemagne has over the comparable Fox, other than almost twice the acceleration, is that ten Charlemagnes can be purchased for the price of a single Fox.   Part of the reduction in cost is the decreased Structural bracings, the lack of advanced armor composities, the lack of dropship docking collars, and most importantly the lack of a L-F Fusion Battery system.   Even though the tactical benefits of the ship is reduced by the lack of the L-F system, the reduction in cost is most fortuitous for the war ravaged economy of the Federated Suns.

Deployment

Just now coming into service with the AFFS Admiralty, the few Charlemagnes have been deployed against the Blakists in their occupation of New Avalon.   A reduced squadron consisting of the FSS Arthur (replacing the FSS Charlemagne as lead ship), the FSS Hastings, and the FSS Siegfried of the 1st Avalon Battle Squadron.   Two more ships are under construction at New Syrtis and one is under construction at Galax.   It is unknown by Our Blessed Order if any more ships will be produced after the destruction of the classes' namesake by the Blakists.

My main concern is that it lacks some point-defense weaponry, an important item to an escort operation. Outside those LPL, it is defenseless against fighters ... although deadly against bigger foes.

Wow...two corvettes in as many days! LOL. Um, since I know just about DIDLEY when it comes to this stuff, I'd have to say, it looks like your ships could easily eat mine alive! Costwise, I think my Xiphos costs a little more, even though it's mostly level 1 equipment! LOL. Anyhow, good job, and very good fluff!

I like it. It definately has the "Corvette" (i.e. Dropship-hunter/escort) feel to it, although I would have liked to see a larger fighter bay just because I like to swarm the enemy . The weaponry is nice, enough to punish all but the most heavily armored dropships, and so long as she stays away from her bigger brothers, armor is sufficient as well. Fluff is really top notch, too, not the standard "Item X does Function Y" affair and was a pleasure to read. Well done, all around. oh, nice pic too, from Homeworld, no?

Overview:

Following the Exodus of the Star League Defense Force from the Inner Sphere, a number of warships were either scuttled or placed in sustaining orbits.   These derelict ships would fuel the craze for finding LosTech and came to enrich those who found them, be they the Successor States or other individuals.   The Free Worlds League was doubly blessed by the number of derelict warships discovered and later refitted thanks to the aid of the Word of Blake.   Now fielding a massive Navy, one almost as large as the fleet that ComStar wields and almost on par with the more naval minded of the Clans, it is a source of concern given how close ties between Thomas Marik and the Word of Blake remains.

A recent proposal put forward by the LCCC towards diversifying the Navy has called for a new Destroyer to complement existing vessels.   A maximum mass of 600,000 tons was allotted for the new ship.   It came as a surprise that SelaSys, Inc received the winning bid.   Best known for producing the ever popular Star Lord, SelaSys's new Lionheart would be their first warship.   It was almost cancelled, had it not been for the timely assistance of the Word of Blake.   In return to for several of the new destroyers, SelaSys was able to work through the production problems of their first warship.

Capabilities:

A number of common parts were used by SelaSys when they completed the first prototype Lionheart just before the New Year of 3066.   Utilizing a frame based on an ancient Carson class Destroyer found by the Word of Blake, but given to the LCCC in trade for a newer Impavido, the SelaSys designed ship is remarkably similar in appearance to the older ship.   In addition to the number of parts re-used from Star Lord, the Lionheart makes use of newer technology that was not available when the FWL's first warships came into service.   Making use of the newest Ferro-Carbide armor, the new destroyer is well protected when compared to other ships of a similar mass, both FWL and Star League.   With so much in the way of resources being poured into their ship care was taken to make them safe for their crews as well, sufficient escape pods and lifeboats are carried to keep the expensive to train crew safe in the event of an emergency.   Plus the ship carries more crew than needed to make full maintenance possible when away from space dock.

Weaponry is centered on paired Naval Lasers in the nose and side arcs.   An additional Naval PPC provides heavy firepower in the nose, broadside, and aft arcs.   With so much of the heavy firepower centered on the nose and front side arcs, engineers at SelaSys, decided to mount missile bays to supplement the energy weaponry.   Each front side arc makes use of a massive AR-10 with each supplied with 15 Killer Whales, 20 White Sharks, and 30 Barracudas as a ready to launch ammo bay.   The broadside and aft bays each have a single White Shark launcher with 15 ready missiles.   Additional ammunition for the missile launchers can be found in the slightly less than 30,000 ton cargo bay.   Rounding out the armament is the anti-fighter weaponry.   Double mounted Large Pulse Lasers give the ship good firepower and with each arc having three bays, it gives the ship the ability to target multiple fighters at a time.

Meant to be grouped together with two other vessels, the Lionheart has space for 18 fighters and has a separate bay for 2 small craft.   The small craft bay also has room for 8 Battle Armor Squads allowing the ship to defend against boarders or to launch their own against enemy ships.   With room for a pair of dropships, the ship can also transport raiding forces deep behind enemy lines, though this duty is rare.   Most of the time, the ship carries assault dropships or fighter carriers.   The addition of a Lithium Fusion Battery system gives the ship further capabilities of both an offensive and defensive nature.   As illustrated numerous times throughout history, a warship equipped with a L-F battery has the ability to jump into an enemy system and then quickly jump back out if faced with too heavy of opposition.   A tactic that was revived with the re-introduction of the L-F battery was where a warship used up both charges to execute an additional jump deeper behind enemy lines to further sow confusion in the defenders.

Crew comfort is not an issue either as a Zero-G pool and a pair of grav decks normally found on their Star Lord is used to good effect.   Cabins are a bit austere for technical crews and pilots, but the cabins used by the crew are more in line with what is found in dorm rooms around the Inner Sphere.   Up to eight crewmen share four double-occupancy rooms and share a common bathroom facility.   Officers have nicer quarters, though only the Captain and First Officer have their own private rooms, albeit with a shared bathroom.   Numerous complaints have forced the LCCC to reduce voyages to less than four months, even though the ship carries consumables for up to six.

Deployment

The first ship to represent the ship class is the one named after the series, the FWLS Lionheart.   Four additional ships are planned with two of them going to fill out the three ship squadron led by the Lionheart and two others to go to the Word of Blake for production assistance.   The as yet un-named ships are set to go to the Word's Terran defense fleet.

Nice modern canon vessel WH. Well written and well designed. I like the nod towards the "buddy" ship system once used by the THN. Great work.

I'm not a big Aerotech guy, but the read was good and the logic behind the design seems solid. The LPL seem like good anti-aircraft weaponry making the destroyer quite the anti fighter unit. Would make sense to include this in a fleet to help defend larger battleships which focus on capital ship engagements and keep them free of fighter pests.

Overview:

Following on the heels of the Combine/Ghost Bear War, the Draconis Combine Admiralty needed to replenish its devestated naval forces.   The massively expensive Overlord A3 and Nekohono'O class Assault Ships were in high demand throughout the Draconis Combine following the past several years of heavy conflict.   Seeking to expand beyond their successful Okinawa Fighter Carrier, BBP Industries at Luthien set out to design a smaller Assault Ship that could escort the steadily growing Draconis Combine fleet.

Knowing that in order to maximize the number of vessels produced at their Luthien shipyard, BBP executives made the decision to produce a smaller sized dropship than the "standard" anti-warship assault ships.   Going by the analogy of taking on multiple larger foes and still triumphing over them, BBP decided to name their vessel after the mythological hero named Raiko.   He was reputed to have slain a great many giants in consort with his retainers.   Taking this to heart, BBP Industries decided to use an old formation of several ships in squadron sized formations to maximize the potential firepower of the smaller ships.

Capabilities:

Using their successful Okinawa as the basis for the Raiko, BBP was able to take a number of shortcuts in their initial design process.   Using the same spheroid hull, the new dropship would also be built around a massive Teleoperated Kraken Naval Missile Launcher.   The mass of the massive naval weapon along with the main drives comprise almost half of the vessel's total mass.   Able to accelerate up to 4 G's, the Raiko is able to outrun almost every available class of transport dropship and even some of the newest warships.   Central to the vessel's success is several launch bays rather reminiscent of the bays used on BBP's Okinawa.   Twelve aerospace fighters give the ship additional punch usable against the fighter screen carried by modern warships or for punishing those that do not carry fighters of their own.

The same successful Star League era combat computer used also on the Okinawa also directs the weapons suite on the Raiko.   Using the same Artemis scopes and Opti-Star fire control common to the original Star League G-11 system, the Raiko has access to one of the most accurate targeting systems available to any other dropship.   Using a mixture of Artemis equipped LRM racks to provide covering fire and several banks of ER PPCs and ER lasers, the accompanying Gauss Rifles provide the vessel with solid firepower in close.   The massive nose mounted Kraken tube provides the vessel with heavy firepower against any other naval target.   Able to quickly destroy a jumpship or even a lightly armored warship with a single hit, the Kraken is usually reserved to take down a target that usually won't succumb to a fighter-led assault or to the massed conventional armament onboard.

Taking a cue from the first design revision of the Okinawa, the armor protection of the Raiko is biased heavily towards the nose and the massive Kraken Launcher.   Using standard armor to keep costs down and to allow for quicker production, it still remains heavy protection for a vessel of its size.   Even with this protection, a lone vessel could still be quickly destroyed if it strayed away from the protection of its peers during combat.   The squadron system works to negate this possible flaw of an otherwise excellent design.

All of this capability comes with a less expensive price tag than the other normally used assault ships used in the Draconis Combine.   With a price tag 30% less than the Overlord A3 and almost half the cost of the more massive Nekohono'O, the Raiko is a bargain for its capabilities (or at least its perceived qualites since the dropship has not yet been tested in battle).

Deployment

The first Raiko, the DCS Yorimitsu so named for the hero that the ship class would be named after slipped its moorings at the BBP Industries main yard near Luthien in late 3066.   The other five vessels in the class are in various stages of construction at the BBP yards and Our Blessed Order estimate that at least six other vessels are also planned for production.   In numbers, they could easily be a deadly accompaniment to the Draconis Combine's rather large warship fleet.

I like it. Though to be different, I'd say go with a White Shark or two. While not the most powerful missile, it does have that nice crit ability. The fluff is good, but i find the whole "Our blessed order" bit to be out of place. The fluff doesnt start off as a report, but seems to finish as one. Overall though a good design.

Overview:

Known throughout the Inner Sphere as an Institute of higher learning, the NAIS has also been at the forefront of developing technology.   The sources for the technology being researched comes primarily from the hated Gray Death Memory Core that Our Blessed Order at one time seeked to destroy to salvaged Clan technology.   Our Blessed Order was able to use the brewing hostilities between the split halves of the once mighty Federated Commonwealth to our own betterment, though we have observed the two sides unlike the Word of Blake who actively stole technology from both sides.   The actions of First Precentor Gavin Dow in his collusion with the former Archon-Princess has given us pause at what secrets have been passed on to her own people and what other secrets have been passed on to the Word of Blake.

The many distributed copies of the Gray Death Memory Core have all been known to contain a number of topics and while most of the military applications have been explored already, there are other more theoretical aspects that have not been fully explored.   The continuing research at the NAIS has been a slow trickle into the field of advanced aerodynamics.   This area has been helped along by a good deal of the information from the Gray Death Memory Core, though a good deal more had to be simulated by computers to fill in the gaps from the old data.   A technology demonstrater was produced by several graduate students as part of their shared thesis into advanced aerodynamic principles.   Work with another group of graduate students brought about an unique opportunity to apply a piece of advanced technology being developed by the NAIS, the reverse-engineered Targeting Computer based on the Clan design was also included in the design.

The revolutionary wing shape being used by the students along with the new mission profile of the fighter quickly led to it being known as the Preybird.

Capabilities:

The principle of a tail-less aircraft has been around since the late 20th Century on Terra, but the lack of reliable propulsion systems and the need for an advanced flight computer quickly squashed much of the testing into this arena.   Using the Gray Death Memory Core's information as a starting point, a series of models were created to test the concept.   From the model stage to a small demonstrator that was little more than a remote-controlled aircraft, the graduate students were able to refine their theories and bring them closer to an actual working concept.   Their design would make use of a completely tail-less design.   The thrust of the engine would be used in place of rudders, ailerons, and flaps.   The wing also would be used along with a specialty shaped fuselage to create the lift necessary to keep the fighter in the air when in atmosphere.   It is unique to note that the Preybird is capable of flight in atmosphere without having to resort to the "brute" force techniques of other aerospace fighters.

Designing the wing proved to be the toughest part of the entire design phase.   The team kept running into a yaw problem caused by the delta wing and the lack of a vertical tail surface.   This was eventually fixed by turing the ends of the wings downward at a slight anhedral angle to control the yaw problems.   The GM 300 XL fusion engine was chosen because of the reliability of the power plant and because of the amazing thrust-to-weight ratio that the fighter would be capable of in powered flight in either atmosphere or space.   A specialty afterburner system was added onto the engine that would allow the system to be shunted through a number of baffles to provide additional stability in flight.   The engine is recessed into the fuselage and is designed for 3-D vectored thrust.

Even though their design was meant to be a technology trainer, the design team knew that in order for them to get further funding from the Institute they would have to show that the craft would have a military application.   It was now that another design team had just made a breakthrough on the reverse-engineered Targeting Computer and needed an aerospace platform to test it on.   Realizing that they would work together to create the ideal test platform for both teams, the design of the Preybird was revised again to incorporate a targeting computer along with a single Blazefire Sweetshot ER Large Laser.   The laser provided good firepower at all ranges and ended up meshing very nicely in a nose mounting on the fire.   Mounted along the centerline, the design team was able to solve some of the pitch problems with the laser placement and the pilot's location.

There were a small number of teething issues that seemed to crop up whenever the engine was brought to full power and the targeting computer was inilialized would cause a feedback that would cause the entire targeting system to short out.   Additional buffers were added and those managed to keep the problem from cropping up again, but it almost shelved the entire project.

Variants:

The original prototype technology demonstrator still made use of the same GM 300 XL engine, but it did not mount any weaponry.   Instead of weaponry a number of test gear were mounted in the fuselage along with advanced cameras to test the flight characteristics.   It was proposed during the flight testing to mount a massive Hermes 360 XL engine, but the mass was too much for the fighter and it would have been unable to carry any test equipment, though several engineers have decided to take another look at this proposal.   The acceleration for the fighter has been improved up to a crushing   10.5 G's from the baseline 9 G's.   A ton of armor was removed to all for the fitting of a single Diverse Optics Type 28 ER Medium Laser.   The armor protection is still substantial for such a light fighter and the amazing thrust allows this fighter to make itself known early in a dogfight, though the light armament is more of a nuisance to slower enemy fighters and is of little practical use in a real dogfight.

Deployment

Following the successful debut of the Preybrird along with the successful defense of their thesis, the graduate students were given the choice to see their design through to full scale production with the Federated Suns.   Both teams agreed and are now overseeing full production of both the targeting computer system and the Preybird.

Once production began in full, a number of Preybirds were sent to both the NAIS Training Cadres for full testing and to several commands.   The NAIS had to skirt a narrow line as they distributed the fighter to mostly Davion affiliated commands, but all to some that pledged allegiance to Katrina so as not to bring down her wrath on the Institute.   The New Avalon Cavaliers also make use of the Preybird as a light interceptor in much the same role as the old Sparrowhawk once filled in Davion regiments.

This is primary premo fluff. The fighter is a high speed attack craft and very suited to suppression and intercept roles.
